tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This paper investigates how Dutch education professionals and Ghanaian migrant youth frame the impact of young people’s geographical mobility on education. The paper is based on a discourse analysis of policy documentation, semi-structured interviews with education professionals and 20 months of multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork with 30 young Ghanaians (ages 16–25). The analyses show that the relationship between mobility and education has historically been problematized in the Netherlands, now permeating negative framings of mobility adopted by Dutch education professionals. Young Ghanaians, however, envision their mobility and education as positively intertwined. The comparison shows that education professionals and young Ghanaians employ frames that conflict because they draw on distinctly different notions of ‘education’ and because dominant framings produce uncompromising narratives, realities,… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Problem Statement: The literature has analyzed the new curriculum from different perspectives, and both the positive and negative sides have been taken into account. In this context, education supervisors’ views of the curriculum have been a topic of curiosity. It is expected that the analysis on of the primary schools curriculum from the angle of this research will make a great contribution. Purpose of Study: The purpose of this research is to examine the curriculum in primary schools, instructional methods and techniques, instructional evaluation, extracurricular activities and the education of first literacy according to the views of the education supervisors. Methods: Research data was obtained using a qualitative research method. Open-ended questions were answered by education supervisors. The study’s population was composed of education supervisors and the… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT In this study, Activity Theory (AT) is used to analyse general patterns for how cultural and historical factors interact with the shaping of science activities in preschools. Data was produced from field notes, video observations, video stimulated recall group discussions and individual interviews with preschool teachers at fourteen preschool units, where science activities were described as a common feature of the practice. Two factors were found to be particularly important for how and whether science learning opportunities were afforded the children: the structure of the preschool community and the type of educational culture within it. In communities characterised by weak mutual commitment and without joint understanding of the purpose of the activities, the science learning objects of the… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Some researchers report that especially the students of the faculty of arts and science do not have sufficient knowledge of the practicability of mathematics since they are mostly interested in the pure aspect of mathematics, and they have difficulty in using their pure mathematical knowledge properly. So, this study aims to examine the views of mathematics students registered in the pedagogical formation program about the use of mathematics in daily life. To this end, an interview form with open-ended questions was administered to 86 pre-service mathematics teachers. The findings showed that pre-service teachers viewed mathematics as an indispensable part of life, but they treated real-life math and school math as separate types of math and had difficulty in relating them to each other. We recommend the use… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract There is a substantial international literature around the impact of different types of grouping by attainment on the academic and personal outcomes of students. This literature, however, is sparse in student voices, especially in relation to mixed-attainment practices. Research has indicated that students of different attainment levels might have different experiences and views of grouping structures. This paper represents a significant contribution to this literature. Drawing on the data collected as part of a large study on student grouping and teaching in England, we analyse the attitudes of students of different attainment levels to mixed-attainment practice, focusing on their explanations for their preferences or aversion to mixed-attainment classes. The data-set is drawn from group discussions and individual interviews… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Considering the performances of the students in the Timss and Pisa examinations, it is seen that they can not solve the problems, do not animate the objects they can not ask geometry questions in three dimensions and can not understand them. For this reason, origami lessons should be put into teacher training programs. Secondary teacher trainees were examined in this study according to their views about using origami activities in maths courses. This qualitative study was carried out with 18 secondary mathematics teacher trainees. Data were gathered by semi-structured interview and 3D tangible materials. Findings revealed that prospective teacher candidates can associate large quantities of mathematical and geometric concepts with some achievements and that they have a constructive view on origami activities. However, it was seen that… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Education policymakers and leaders often say that the opinions and observations of teachers are among the most important information to help explain and understand what is happening in schools. Teachers’ voices can inject a sense of classroom and school-level realism into those discussions and add clarity and credibility to issues that are often clouded by competing interests. The Center on Education Policy (CEP), in an effort to gather and amplify teachers’ voices about current education issues and their own profession, conducted a national survey of public school K-12 teachers in the winter of 2015-16. The survey focused on a strategic set of issues for policymakers, educators, business leaders, and the public, including teachers’ views on their profession, standards, testing, and evaluations. The nationally representative sample surveyed for… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Geometry is an essential component of mathematics which promotes the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Geometry shapes are an integral part of our lives. This study focused on the teachers’ practices, specifically on how teachers ought to be equipped with a good understanding of the effectiveness of the use of diagrams in geometry teaching and learning. A mixed-method approach comprising of questionnaires and interviews was used in this study. Ninety-one teachers participated in this study. The research findings were categorized using the four themes of utility, positive attitudes, negative attitudes, and teachers’ use of diagrams in geometry class. The study showed that diagrams are effective in the teaching and learning of geometry concepts. It is recommended that teachers could do well if they make use… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The present study examined lower secondary students’ images of mathematics, comprised of stated attitudes to and perceived needs for mathematics, and views about mathematicians and their work. A group of 1284 lower secondary students drew a picture of mathematician at work and described their drawings. The students’ drawings fell into two distinct groups: drawings that depicted their view of what a mathematician at work would look like, and drawings that depicted a mathematician who was clearly a mathematics teacher. This article presents the data regarding the latter group. Trends that emerged from the drawings in this sample included that mathematics teachers were: predominantly female; had a positive image; incorporated lectures, explanations, and demonstrations; and used whiteboards and books as tools of the profession. The article concludes with… Continue Reading →

We examine a group (N = 88) of Swedish first-year engineering students, their motivation, self-efficacy, and beliefs about the nature of mathematics, and how these relate to their task performance in mathematics. In our data, engineering students who emphasized the exact reasoning in their view of mathematics performed significantly better in a set of mathematical tasks than those who emphasized the applications of mathematics. Similarly, the higher self-efficacy and the intrinsic and utility values of mathematics relate to better performance in… Continue Reading →
