eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This submission contains the Proceedings of the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group (CMESG), held at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The CMESG is a group of mathematicians and mathematics educators who meet annually to discuss mathematics education issues at all levels of learning. The aims of the Study Group are: to advance education by organizing and coordinating national conferences and seminars to study and improve the theories of the study of mathematics or any other aspects of mathematics education in Canada at all levels; and to undertake research in mathematics education and to disseminate the results of this research. These proceedings include plenary lectures, working group reports, topic session descriptions, new PhD reports, and summaries of ad hoc and… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report examines mathematical graphing utilities or function plotters for use in introductory algebra classes of more advanced courses. Each product selected for inclusion in this report is able to construct the graph of a given equation on the screen and serves as a utility which may be used by the student for an open-ended exploration of a mathematical concept or by the teacher as a demonstration tool. The products are classified into one of the following types: (1) general purpose graphing utilities; (2) demonstration tools; and (3) special utility programs. In general it was felt that the positive aspects of function plotters far outweigh the negative. The ability to automate the tedious process of plotting the graph of an equation enables students to examine more equations… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Although the number of computers in the school system is increasing, many schools are not using computers to their capacity. One reason for this may be computer anxiety on the part of the teacher. A review of the computer anxiety literature reveals little information on the subject, and findings from previous studies suggest that basic controlled research is needed. A study was undertaken to measure computer anxiety in a college population and to determine the relationship of computer anxiety to personality types and math anxiety. Undergraduates (N=59) completed Oetting’s Computer Anxiety Scale (COMPAS), A Questionnaire About Computers, the Math Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS), and the Vocational Preference Inventory to determine Holland types. Demographic data revealed that subjects had limited access to computers and only a minimal amount… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Sharing Success program, recognizes exemplary public school programs and practices in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Each year, SERVE emphasizes a specific program area for recognition based on one of the national goals for education. This “Sharing Success” publication documents several dozen of the region’s most effective programs in the areas of mathematics, science, and technology (computer-assisted instruction). Programs are ranked for quality and innovation and are presented in three sections: (1) Programs of Excellence, highest rated programs (21) in the areas of Mathematics, Science, Math/Science, and Technology (e.g., science–tropical rain forest, summer science fun lab; math–elementary math lead teachers, problem-solving approach to algebra; math/science–Hayes Cooper Center [magnet school]; technology–writing to write); (2) Quality Programs (46) meeting a high… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This instructor’s guide contains materials for a 40-hour course designed to refresh math skills for current computer numerical control machine operators. The course uses two instructional methods: computer-based multimedia and traditional instruction. The course description lists target audience and general objective. The next section gives instructors basic information related to providing successful educational programs in a workplace setting, an instructor’s lexicon of strategies and principles that can be used in teaching, instructor’s role and responsibilities, and course objectives. An explanation of lesson format describes these components of each lesson plan: unit name; lesson name; description and specific goals; objectives; prerequisite skills; technology use; materials needed; teacher to teacher; pretest; posttest; purpose/rationale; procedures/activities; evaluation and extension activities; resources; and homework. A section on planning and scheduling deals with… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Embedding computers in math teaching is not a totally new issue, but the dilemmas related to it multiply more rapidly than the answers are being supplied. This study asks: What is the most appropriate way to prepare instrumentally and mentally the future math teachers to the reality demanding permanent competent adjustment to rapidly developing computerized environment in math teaching? In order to try to refer to this question at least partially, the authors designed a research project in which they studied the performances of several groups of students, studying several courses at different levels of mathematical knowledge and embedding a variety of computerized tools. Moreover, they induced all of the students to experience at least two-three different computerized tools in different courses during three years of their… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Improving college completion is a shared objective of higher education. It is the focus of colleges, foundations, state governments, and the White House. Students have gotten the message–their aspirations are on the rise. But the nation’s collective ambition far exceeds today’s outcomes. Many students are not attaining their goals. College readiness is at the heart of this disconnect between aspirations and results. If student outcomes are to equal student aspirations, colleges must be more effective in helping underprepared students move into–and successfully complete–college-level work. This 2016 National Report presents innovative strategies that are showing promise– multiple measures for assessing readiness, corequisite courses, redesigned math, accelerated developmental courses, computer-assisted developmental math, developmental education paired with workplace skills, high school partnerships, and improved preparation for placement tests. Examples of… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in mathematics are currently adopted in most U.S. states. Nonetheless, most math teachers across the country are still experiencing difficulties in putting these standards into practice. Teachers and local school administrators are faced with a challenge of adapting methodologies in instruction and assessment to ensure that students master the knowledge and skills required in the new standards. This leads to an urgent need for well-designed teaching and assessment tools for math education that are aligned to the CCSS. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the Computer Adaptive Formative Assessment (CAFA) SmartWorkbook which is an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) based teaching and assessment tool specially designed for coping with challenges in implementing the CCSS in mathematics. The CAFA SmartWorkbook… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The concept of integrating mathematics and art course work broadens an appreciation of the connection between the two. Although calculations and getting the right answer have traditionally been the focus of mathematics at the secondary level, other topics have recently begun to be addressed, such as mathographics, or the relationship between art and mathematics, and creative constructions and shapes. Art instruction also includes considerable instruction in mathematics, as artists need to understand such concepts as parallel lines, visual distance, and perspective distortion. Moreover, many examples of mathematics in art works exist, such Albrecht Durer’s use of grids in woodcuts and Salvador Dali’s use of the hypercube, while there are also many examples of literature that support the mathematics/art connection. In interrelating mathematics and art at the college… Continue Reading →
