Eric.ed.gov – Preservice Teachers’ Use of Noticing Practices to Evaluate Technological Resources

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study examines how elementary preservice teachers notice children’s mathematical thinking and how this noticing influences the evaluation of technological resources. In particular, we explore the aspects of thinking to which preservice teachers attend and how they interpret evidence about children’s thinking when using the Spatial-Temporal Math (ST Math) program. Data collection included a group survey administered after an initial exploration of a set of ST Math activities, screencast recordings during which children used and talked about the program, and a reflective writing assignment. The findings of this study show how preservice teachers used their noticing skills (attending and interpreting) in their evaluations of the tool, in some cases prompting them to shift their evaluation on the basis of student thinking. Eric.ed.gov – Strengthening Children’s Math Skills with Enhanced Instruction: The Impacts of Making Pre-K Count and High 5s on Kindergarten Outcomes

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Early math skills are a strong predictor of later achievement for young children, not only in math, but in other domains as well. Exhibiting strong math skills in elementary school is predictive of later high school completion and college attendance. To that end, the Making Pre-K Count and High 5s studies set out to rigorously assess whether providing high-quality math instruction, aligned across prekindergarten (pre-K) and kindergarten, could lead to long-term gains across a variety of domains for students growing up in low-income communities in New York City. In Making Pre-K Count, pre-K programs were randomly assigned to receive an evidence-based early math curriculum (Building Blocks) and associated professional development or to a pre-K-as-usual control condition. Pre-K in New York City changed rapidly during the study, with… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Difficulties of Early Childhood Education Teachers’ in Mathematics Activities

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this study, it was aimed to identify the difficulties experienced by early childhood education teachers in planning, implementation and evaluation processes of in-class and out-of-class mathematics activities and parent involvement in such activities. The answers of the teachers to the questions on the interview form were recorded via a voice recorder and transcribed into written form by the researcher. In the direction of the findings, those who think that they have some difficulty in planning the in-class mathematics activities showed the causes as the idea of difficulty of mathematics, the lack of professional experience, failure to know the child well, the difficulties in adaptation, the lack of budget and resources. The difficulties in implementing inclass math activities were indicated as children’s mobility, distraction, having different levels… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Making Maths Useful: How Two Teachers Prepare Adult Learners to Apply Their Numeracy Skills in Their Lives outside the Classroom

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This pilot case study of two teachers and their learner groups from Adult and Community settings, investigates how numeracy teachers, working with adult learners in discrete numeracy classes, motivate and enable learners to build on their informal skills and apply new learning to their own real-life contexts. Teachers used a range of abstract and contextualised activities to achieve this. Similarities and differences between teachers’ approaches were analysed using a Context Continuum model. Whether teachers started with real-life situations then moved to the abstract mathematics within them, or approached it the other way around seemed less important than ensuring there was movement back and/or forth between the different discourses of numeracy and mathematics. Eric.ed.gov – Teachers’ Mathematics Education and Readiness Beliefs, and Kindergarteners’ Mathematics Learning

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study investigates kindergarten children’s mathematics learning with a focus on the role of teachers’ mathematics education and readiness beliefs, and home learning environment. Using structural equation modeling to estimate the individual differences in early mathematics learning, data from 5,845 kindergarteners was evaluated. Findings show that teachers’ beliefs regarding what is important for children’s preparation in mathematics selectively influenced what they taught in the classrooms for mathematics education and what children experienced in kindergarten. The results also reveal that children who were provided ample experiences in reading and singing activities at home, and more frequent math learning practices, problem-solving activities, and arts or life-related materials within the classroom showed greater math thinking skills and higher math achievement scores than those who were not provided such experiences. Eric.ed.gov – Preservice Teachers’ Observations of Children’s Learning during Family Math Night

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Family math night can easily be implemented into mathematics methodology courses providing an opportunity for field-based learning. Preservice teachers were asked to develop and implement an inquiry-based activity at a family math night event held at a local school with personnel, elementary children and their parents in attendance. This action research examines what preservice teachers discovered about how children learn mathematics during their interactions with parents and children. Preservice teachers’ individual reflections focusing on children’s learning were qualitatively analyzed and clustered. In addition, data from teacher educator’s observation notes was used to triangulate findings. Four themes were identified in relation to children’s needs for promoting learning in mathematics: (1) activity adjustment (2) engagement through guiding and questioning (3) motivational issues and (4) the use of manipulatives and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Maths Games: A Universal Design Approach to Mathematical Reasoning

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Providing students with an opportunity to explore mathematical content through games allows teachers to include tasks that: (1) present alternative representations of the content; (2) welcome various expressions of mathematical reasoning; and (3) incorporate variations that empower all students to engage in the problem solving process. Games not only motivate students to learn mathematical concepts, but games also embody the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)–a framework designed to optimise instructional decisions to meet students’ needs. In this article, the authors Games not only motivate students to learn mathematical concepts, but games also embody the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)–a framework designed to optimise instructional decisions to meet students’ needs. Eric.ed.gov – Promoting Numeracy through a Family Math Night

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Over the past decade, the international (PISA) and national (CMEC Pan-Canadian Assessment), standardized testing results have shown that students in Manitoba have relatively low results in the area of mathematics when compared to the rest of Canada. This article discusses a project that was devised as a means of reaching out to a school community in order to support numeracy development. The local Family Math Night (FMN) hosted as part of this research project fostered positive relationships between school, university, and community; engaged parents and students in curriculum-based mathematics activities in a supportive, non-threatening, and fun atmosphere; and potentially had a positive effect on teacher perceptions of parental involvement and school-parent partnerships. The emergent school-wide follow-up event provided teacher candidates with opportunities to plan for and engage… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – An Investigation of Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers’ Skills in the Development of Activities

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this research is to determine pre-service mathematics teachers’ skills in the development of activities. The research was carried out using the case study which is descriptive method. For the collection of data, 57 pre-service mathematics teachers’ in their final year secondary math teachers’ education department attended the research. Pre-service teachers were asked to develop 5 activities for the concept of function a high school mathematics curricula. After obtaining the data, it was analyzed using the descriptive analysis method. The developed activities were first examined to see if they qualified as activities, which would be used in the learning process stage, and then examined to see which skills were reflected in the activities. The findings indicated that more than half of the pre-service teachers could… Continue Reading
