Eric.ed.gov – Preparing the Future Workforce: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Policy in K-12 Education

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Last December, the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Coalition–a national organization of more than 600 groups representing knowledge workers, educators, scientists, engineers, and technicians–wrote to President-elect Obama urging him to “not lose sight of the critical role that STEM education plays in enabling the United States to remain the economic and technological leader of the 21st century global marketplace.” While that imperative appears to have resonated in Washington, has it and should it resonate in Madison? This report attempts to answer that question by examining the extent to which STEM skills are a necessity for tomorrow’s Wisconsin workforce, whether schools are preparing students to be STEM-savvy workers, and where STEM falls in the state’s list of educational priorities. The author and his colleagues find that… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Math and Science Are America’s Future. National Math and Science Initiative Annual Report, 2008

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper presents the annual report of the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) for 2008. Eighteen months ago, the National Math and Science Initiative did not exist. Today NMSI is helping lead the country forward in math and science. In just 18 months, NMSI has rolled out the first round of grants and has implemented programs in 14 vanguard states. In 2007, NMSI awarded grants of $13.2 each to non-profits in six states to institute AP Training and Incentive programs and grants of $2.4 million to 13 institutions of higher learning for the replication of the UTeach training program for math and science teachers. These programs are essential to address two of the country’s most pressing challenges: (1) Getting more American students to master the math… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – An Entrepreneurship Venture for Training K-12 Teachers to Use Engineering as a Context for Learning

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this paper, the authors present their experiences from participating in a National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps L training program established for business startups, using Blank’s Lean LaunchPad, Osterwalder’s Business Model Canvas, and associated tools. They used the entrepreneurial skills acquired through this training to scale-up their emerging innovation, the Cincinnati Engineering Enhanced Math and Science Program (CEEMS), which had been developed, implemented, and evaluated with successful results over a period of seven years in a targeted 14 school-district partnership in Greater Cincinnati. The overriding goal was to improve student learning and success rates in K-12 math and science courses by helping to accelerate the process of bringing effective educational innovation, CEEMS, to scale. In CEEMS, teachers were trained in using challenge-based learning (CBL) and the engineering… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Engineering Efforts and Opportunities in the National Science Foundation’s Math and Science Partnerships (MSP) Program

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The National Science Foundation’s Math and Science Partnership (MSP) program (NSF, 2012) supports partnerships between K-12 school districts and institutions of higher education (IHEs) and has been funding projects to improve STEM education in K-12 since 2002. As of 2011, a total of 178 MSP projects have received support as part of a STEM education investment of over $900 million. One important movement over the past decade has been increasing interest in incorporating engineering and design content in K-12 teaching and learning, a strategy validated in the National Research Council report, “A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts and Core Ideas” (NRC, 2011). The goals of K-12 engineering and design content traditionally have been to prepare students to think critically, creatively, and independently by solving… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Opening Opportunities through Math Board Games: Collaboration between Schools and a Teacher Education Program

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: As the recession that began in 2008 continues to impact schools at every level, collaboration among educational entities is a matter of survival because public schools and universities are strapped for resources. Therefore, they must reach out and combine their efforts to provide needed services at a minimum cost. A natural partnership exists between public schools and institutions of higher learning that provide the lifeline to schools via their teacher preparation programs. When properly coordinated, collaboration between a college of education and public schools can benefit everyone involved. This article outlines the collaborative efforts between a university and a school district focusing on a math program, the eX-Games Project, a community-based project that brings together pre-service and in-service teachers, graduate students, and K-8th grade students to develop… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Enhancing Collaboration among Math and Career and Technical Education Teachers: Is Technology the Answer?

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Teacher collaboration has been recognized as a vital component to student success. This project represents an evaluation of the researchers’ initial efforts toward providing in-service education for teachers focused on collaboration between math and CTE teachers. The purpose of this study was to (1) describe selected characteristics of secondary teachers of math and CTE, (2) describe their perceptions concerning the “value of” and their “willingness to implement” the instructional practices and activities presented during a professional development seminar, and (3) assess their views about the use of emerging technology for teacher collaboration. Survey responses indicated that using the Math-in-CTE Model was valued. Overall, respondents valued technology but seemed a bit reserved about the likelihood of implementing and using technology. Results imply that teachers with positive attitudes and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – A Decade in the Making: Early Math Education Initiative Seeks Broad Impact. Principles for Effective Education Grantmaking. Case Study No. 18

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: When CME Group Foundation (CME) was formed in 2007 with an endowment from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Trust, its founders set out to engage in grantmaking that would improve education from cradle to career and strengthen the region’s economy. During its first decade, nearly a quarter of CME’s grants targeted early childhood education with an emphasis on improving early math education. With students in the United States trailing students from other industrialized nations in math, CME’s leaders believed it was crucial to address the problem in the early years. Helping low-income children in Chicago build essential math skills would not only help them succeed in school but would also further the success and economic well-being of the state and the nation. From the beginning, CME’s executive director… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Educators Collaborating to Improve Mathematics: Three Structures That Mattered in Math in Common Districts

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: For school districts in California, just as one set of revolutionary new content standards is beginning to feel familiar, another deep change is brewing. Districts have now had more than five years to wrestle with how they implement the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSS-M) (NGA Center & CCSSO, 2010). Many have made large-scale changes in their systems. However, state math assessment scores have remained flat, suggesting that many districts may still be in the early stages of understanding and implementing changes that are necessary to support instruction. This report describes how 10 districts participating in the Math in Common (MiC) initiative have approached implementation of the CCSS-M somewhat differently. To implement their district visions of the CCSS-M, each MiC district’s MiC leadership team developed three… Continue Reading
