Eric.ed.gov – Teacher Incentive Fund STEM Grant in Houston ISD: A Descriptive Overview. Research Educational Program Report

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Since established by an Appropriations Act in 2006, the Teacher Incentive Fund (TIF) competitive grant program in the U.S. Department of Education has supported human capital strategies “to ensure that students attending high-poverty schools have better access to effective teachers and principals, especially in hard-to-staff subject areas” such as science and math. Responding to the national agenda to improve STEM education, in 2012, the fourth cohort of the Teacher Incentive Fund federal grant competition (TIF4) included special consideration for projects designed to improve STEM education by identifying, developing, and utilizing master teachers as leaders of broader improvements (OESE, 2012a). Houston Independent School District’s (HISD) approach to STEM education — described in this report — is an innovative policy response to the national challenges of preparing students for… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Effect of Interactive Whiteboard Technology on a Math Curriculum Unit

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Purpose: The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of interactive whiteboard technology on the math curriculum in a single school district. Methodology: Six second grade teachers tracked their technology use during math instruction to be compared with student performance on a common assessment at the conclusion a counting money unit and qualitative grade data collected by the teacher. Results: The results indicate that interactive technology use during instruction is not having a positive effect on student learning. Conclusions: How interactive whiteboard technology is being used during instruction is more important than how often interactive whiteboard technology is being used. If the technology is only being used to create perfect visuals it is not being used to its full potential Recommendations: In order for schools… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Teacher Incentive Fund STEM Grant in Houston ISD: A Human Capital Approach to Improving STEM Education. Research Educational Program Report

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The fourth cohort of the Teacher Incentive Fund federal grant competition (“TIF4”) included special consideration for projects that would identify, develop, and utilize master teachers as leaders of STEM education. In September 2012, the Houston Independent School District (HISD) was awarded a TIF4 grant for $15.9 million to implement a human capital approach to improving STEM education. The TIF4 project schools were among the HISD schools serving grades K-8 with the highest student economic disadvantage and the most risk factors for chronic absenteeism. A human capital approach to strengthening STEM education addressed the TIF4 project schools’ need for high-quality supports for student learning, and the systemic challenges to teacher retention, development, and recruitment in hard-to-staff subjects. This report overviews the performance-based compensation strategies implemented through the TIF4… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Implementation of Kentucky’s Learning Standards in English Language Arts and Math: Insights, Innovations, and Challenges in Six Districts

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Center on Standards, Alignment, Instruction, and Learning (C-SAIL), examines through four lines of study to determine how college- and career-readiness (CCR) standards are implemented, if they improve student learning, and what instructional tools measure and support their implementation. This brief presents findings from C-SAIL’s Implementation Study, which uses interview and survey data to explore how district administrators, principals, and teachers are understanding, experiencing, and implementing the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) in English language arts (ELA) and math. Examined are how and what kinds of supports are provided to teachers of all students, including students with disabilities (SWDs) and English learners (ELs) who take the general state assessment. Other district characteristics were examined such as percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, student achievement or growth… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – “Double-Dosing” in Math in North Carolina Public Schools. REL 2016-140

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Double-dosing in math expands the time for students to learn by having them enroll in two (or occasionally more) math courses during the regular school day. Although the practice can take different forms and be used at different grade levels (Chait, Muller, Goldware, & Housman, 2007; Nomi & Allensworth, 2009), most research on double-dosing in math has focused on students who need preparation to make the transition to Algebra I or similar rigorous high school math courses–typically, grade 8 or grade 9 students. This study aims to provide a more complete picture of the prevalence of double-dosing in math in North Carolina in 2011/12, the most recent year that data were available. It also reports on the use of double-dosing for remediation, maintenance, and enrichment; compares schools… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Educators Collaborating to Improve Mathematics: Three Structures That Mattered in Math in Common Districts

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: For school districts in California, just as one set of revolutionary new content standards is beginning to feel familiar, another deep change is brewing. Districts have now had more than five years to wrestle with how they implement the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSS-M) (NGA Center & CCSSO, 2010). Many have made large-scale changes in their systems. However, state math assessment scores have remained flat, suggesting that many districts may still be in the early stages of understanding and implementing changes that are necessary to support instruction. This report describes how 10 districts participating in the Math in Common (MiC) initiative have approached implementation of the CCSS-M somewhat differently. To implement their district visions of the CCSS-M, each MiC district’s MiC leadership team developed three… Continue Reading
