eric.ed.gov har udgivet: American postsecondary education is a diverse collection of public and private institutions, ranging from community and technical colleges to comprehensive and research universities. These institutions are an invaluable resource to states and to the nation — they educate many of the talented people who work in our industries, businesses, and civic sectors, and they are the places where much of the research and development that benefits this country is conducted. While postsecondary education in the United States has already achieved key successes in the innovation economy, the public postsecondary education system overall risks falling behind its counterparts in many other nations around the world — places where there have been massive efforts to link postsecondary education to the specific innovation needs of industries and regions. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE, 2004) administers a formula grant program to states that is intended to increase the academic achievement of students in mathematics and science by enhancing the content knowledge and teaching skills of classroom teachers. Partnerships between high-need school districts and the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) faculty in institutions of higher education are at the core of these improvement efforts. These programs articulate the President’s priority of using partnering to close the achievement gap in math and science between majority and minority and/or disadvantaged students in order to keep the U.S. competitive in international markets. However, in rural communities, the infrastructure for developing these partnerships (i.e., nearby institutions of higher education, stable economic base, human resources) is often not available. In… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In 1991, the President announced America 2000, a complex and long-range plan designed to move every community toward the six national education goals. Consistent with this, the Office for Civil Rights instituted a National Enforcement Strategy designed to help protect equal educational opportunity for all students. This pamphlet has been prepared principally for elementary and secondary school teachers, counselors, and administrators who serve in school systems that have programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance. It reviews survey data concerning the representation of minority and female students in math and science courses at the elementary and secondary level and attainment of postsecondary degrees in these academic disciplines. Also, information is provided, based on research findings and experience gained to date, on ways for improving interest and… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Females are underrepresented in courses in mathematics, science, and computer and other high technology applications. Research in the last decade has identified a variety of factors that contribute to females’ lack of participation in math, science, and technology. These factors include, but are not limited to, the following: stereotypic images and expectations, lack of self-confidence, peer pressure, learning environment, teacher behavior, lack of female role models, failure to see relevance, attributional style or personal responsibility, and lack of incentives. The following strategies can address these issues: (1) parents’, teachers’, and counselors’ efforts to dispel stereotypes; (2) improvement of self-confidence; (3) use of peer pressure by making success in math and science prestigious; (4) enhancement of the learning environment; (5) equalization of teacher behavior; (6) provision of female… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Project for Minority Student Achievement (PMSA), a 5-year program funded in part by the National Science Foundation, is a program designed to engender systemic change within a segment of a large urban school district in the Los Angeles (California) Basin. Approximately 40% of the student participants were African American and approximately 60% were Hispanic/Latino-American. The program sought to serve 58% of the 90,793 students, 41% of the 6,573 teachers, and all of the principals of the 40 targeted schools. The School of Education of a major urban university, also in the Los Angeles Basin, provided a total of nine long-term activities for students, educators, and school administrators. Students in grades 4 through 10 participated in activities such as the Summer Science/Math Camp and college preparatory survival… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report presents the findings from Project Tomorrow’s 2007 Speak Up Survey, informing international discussions about how to improve science learning in the 21st century through an exploration of student, teacher, parent, and school leader attitudes about science education. Project Tomorrow administered its survey in all 50 United States, the District of Columbia, American Department of Defense Schools, Canada, Mexico, and Australia. The top participating states included: Texas, California, Arizona, Illinois, Alabama, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Michigan. Project Tomorrow surveyed 319,223 K-12 students, 25,544 teachers, 19,726 parents, and 3,263 school leaders. Respondents were from 3,729 schools and 867 districts. Ninety-seven percent were from public schools; three percent were from private schools. School locations were 32 percent urban, 40 percent suburban, and 29 percent rural. Forty-three… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Disability Research Encompassing Native Americans in Math and Science (DREAMS) is a comprehensive program that offers math and science experiences to Native American students with disabilities and encourages systems change in schools on or near Indian reservations in related domains. These domains include development of science instructional models based on hands-on learning and conceptual development, approaches to meet national science and mathematics standards, infusion of Native American culture into instruction and methods, accommodations for students with disabilities in science and math instruction, and career exploration in technical fields. DREAMS is a partnership between the University of North Dakota and 10-12 public and tribal schools in North Dakota. Project activities include curriculum and materials development; two annual week-long summer institutes for students, parents, and teachers; teacher education in… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Four nontraditional teacher education programs to attract and train mathematics and science teachers are described. Three of the programs are aimed at midcareer professionals; the fourth is aimed at recent college graduates who did not prepare to become teachers as undergraduates. All are small programs; they provide models for other institutions to follow. The programs are at Harvard University, the University of Massachusetts, the University of Vermont, and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The study was organized around six research questions: (1) What are the characteristics of these programs? (2) What are the characteristics of their students? (3) What attracted the students to the programs? (4) What are students’ evaluations of the programs? (5) What are the career plans and motivations of the students? and (6)… Continue Reading →
