Eric.ed.gov – Teacher Strategies That Work for Girls and Boys. Math and Science for the Coed Classroom.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This pamphlet offers tips and strategies from teachers who are successful in encouraging both girls and boys to participate in the classroom. Although successful teachers are all different, each classroom has the following things in common: (1) the classroom environment is respectful of students and teachers; (2) all students participate in class; and (3) the classrooms incorporate multiple modes of learning. Sections of the pamphlet include: (1) “Teachers’ Tips and Strategies”; (2) “From Harassment to Respect: Changing Classroom Climates”; (3) “We’re All in This Together: Improving Classroom Interaction”; and (4) “Motivation, Fun, and Hard Work: Increasing Academic Success.” A 9-item reference and sources section concludes the pamphlet. Eric.ed.gov – Accommodating Students with Disabilities in Math and Science Classes: A Resource for Teachers [and Videotape].

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This kit is designed to help science and mathematics teachers become more aware of the rights, responsibilities, potential contribution, and needs of students with disabilities, teachers’ responsibilities for ensuring equal educational opportunities for all students in their programs, and strategies for accommodating students who have disabilities in science and math classes. Material includes a notebook, a 2-hour videotape recording, and informational handouts and a pamphlet on the DO-IT (Disabilities Opportunities Internetworking Technology) program. The “Background and General Strategies” section of the notebook covers general issues related to access to education for individuals with disabilities, and legal and attitudinal issues as well as general teaching strategies. The”Computing Access” section covers the three areas that must be addressed in order to provide full access to computing resources (computer lab… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – EASI Street to Science and Math for K-12 Students.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper discusses the poor preparation of children with disabilities in math and science fields, and the perception that students with disabilities are not capable of doing work in science and math, which is often reinforced by teachers and parents. It is argued that the low expectations and waived requirements for children with disabilities are preventing children with disabilities from gaining a solid foundation in math and science. The need for children with disabilities to be trained on adaptive technology to enable them to meet basic math and science requirements in college is addressed, as well as methods for making elementary and secondary math and science text books accessible to students with disabilities. Methods include having a staff member or teacher act as a reader, providing brailled… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Passport Reading Journeys [TM]. What Works Clearinghouse Intervention Brief

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Literacy skills are critical to students’ academic achievement and setting them on a path to successful high school graduation and readiness for college and careers. “Passport Reading Journeys” [TM] is a supplemental literacy curriculum designed to help improve reading comprehension, vocabulary, word study, and writing skills of struggling readers in grades 6-12. Lessons incorporate both teacher-led instruction and technology, including whole-class and small-group instruction, independent reading, video segments, and independent computer-based practice. The curriculum includes a series of two-week, ten lesson instructional sequences on topics in science, math, fine art, literature, and social studies. Each sequence is themed as an expedition or journey for students. This What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) report, part of the WWC’s Adolescent Literacy topic area, explores the effects of “Passport Reading Journeys” [TM]… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Teaching Math and Science to Language Minority Children: Implications for Teachers.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Factors influencing the learning of mathematics in the linguistically diverse classroom are examined, drawing on the literature of mathematics and science instruction and of multicultural education. Teachers are encouraged to be aware that several linguistic, cultural, and cognitive factors affect the learner’s academic performance, and to use linguistically and culturally sensitive instructional methods and activities to ensure success in math. First, a rationale for multicultural math instruction is presented, and then the relationship between language and math is examined in terms of the specific needs of limited-English-proficient students. Finally, some pedagogical implications and recommendations for classroom activities are offered. The latter include word problems that encourage repetitive language use, concrete and sensory experiences, cooperative activities that encourage interpersonal contact and problem-solving, writing and rewriting math problems, and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Role of Advanced High School Coursework in Increasing STEM Career Interest

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Several avenues are open to students who wish to study advanced science or mathematics in high school, which include Advanced Placement courses and teacher-designed courses unaffiliated with organized programs. We employ a retrospective cohort study of 4,691 nationally representative college students at 34 randomly selected, colleges and universities to examine the relationship between taking advanced high school courses and students’ interest in pursuing a STEM career, while controlling for prior interests and experiences. We are able to distinguish between those students choosing to take an additional year in a science or math subject from those taking Advanced Placement (AP), which is most commonly taken as a second year course, but is increasingly taken as a first year course. We find that the number of years of a… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Principals’ Perceptions of the Causes of Teacher Ineffectiveness in Different Secondary Subjects

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: With issues of teacher quality in the spotlight, it has been suggested that teachers of mathematics and science too often lack content knowledge in the subjects they teach. Accordingly, research is needed to determine whether teacher ineffectiveness in these subjects is more frequently caused by deficiencies in content knowledge or in pedagogical knowledge, and whether teachers of mathematics and science are more often content-deficient relative to other teachers. Research as such requires that teacher performance be assessed, but this assessment has proven contentious. Use of principals’ evaluations to assess teacher performance, while hardly foolproof, has the advantage of providing school-level managers’ perspective on whether content knowledge or pedagogical knowledge constitutes the more frequent perceived cause of teacher ineffectiveness in secondary schools, especially in mathematics and science. Research… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Communicative Math and Science Teaching: An Instructional Guide.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The guide is intended for teacher trainers providing pre- and in-service programs for mathematics, science, and language teachers, and designed to accompany a 34-minute videotape recording of the same title (not included here), to help teachers integrate language learning and academic mastery in math and science. The video was created for a teacher training program for schools with high proportions of ethnic- and linguistic-minority students, but has been effective with native-English-speaking students who have difficulty with the specialized languages of math and science. It is consistent with guidelines of major math and science teaching associations. The video illustrates ways in which language, math, and science teachers can promote classroom discourse characterized by inquiry, problem-solving, clarification and justification of ideas, and teacher-student interaction. It uses a documentary approach,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Project Smart-Science and Math Access: Resources & Technology.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper describes Project SMART (Science and Math Access: Resources & Technology), a multi-year professional development effort that includes components for all adults who regularly have contact with children with disabilities. The common goal of each of the components is the development of both efficacy and capacity to inspire children with disabilities to overcome challenges in the pursuit of excellence in math and science education. While the emphasis of the program has been on inservice teacher education, components have been developed for the following groups that support the efforts of children: general education teachers, special education teachers, parents of children with disabilities, and guidance counselors. The model program is intended to promote positive and permanent changes in the academic climate of classrooms and to provide teachers and… Continue Reading
