Eric.ed.gov – Using the Scientific Method to Engage Mathematical Modeling: An Investigation of pi

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this paper is to explain how to use the scientific method as the framework to introduce mathematical model. Two interdisciplinary activities, targeted for students in grade 6 or grade 7, are explained to show the application of the scientific method while building a mathematical model to investigate the relationship between the circumferences and the diameter of circular objects. In the first activity, a research question is pursued as it relates to the stated hypothesis. In the second activity, the same research question is retained; however, the use of exploration helps to build the hypothesis. The activities serve as examples to show how middle school math teachers may use scientific inquiry to motive students’ understanding of mathematical models as well as engage in science beyond… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – An Investigation the Effect of STEM Practices on Fifth Grade Students’ Academic Achievement and Motivations at the Unit “Exploring and Knowing the World of Living Creatures”

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study aims to investigate the effects of Science Technology Education Math (STEM) practices on academic achievement and motivations of students in the 5th grade of middle school in “Exploring and Knowing the World of Living Creatures” section in Science lecture. The study was designed in a semi-experimental pattern with pre-test post-test control group. A middle school in the center of Antakya was selected by appropriate sampling method. The sample of the study was formed by the 5th grade students who were studied in 2 sections where the same teacher taught. A group of students in one section formed the control group of students while the other branch formed experimental group. The unit ‘Exploring and Knowing the World of Living Creatures’ was explained through the lesson plans… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Development of Curricula, Teacher Supports, and Assessments for Pre-Kindergarten Mathematics and Science

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The “MTP-Math/Science” curricula specifically target the teaching and learning of children at risk of early school failure, a population for whom achievement gaps in mathematics and science are visible even in Pre-K years. “MTP-Math” is based on Focal Areas defined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) (2006) for Pre-K through the 8th grade and developmental trajectories for Mathematics from Pre-K to grade two advanced by Clements (2004), and further focused through a review of state Pre-Kindergarten standards. In the authors’ earlier research with the “MTP” model to support language and literacy (Pianta, Mashburn, Luckner, Myers, & Kilday, 2008), the “MTP” teacher professional development program improved the quality of classroom interactions that Pre-K students experience, which in turn, promoted children’s development of language and literacy… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Preparing STEM Teachers: The Key to Global Competitiveness

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Like many sectors in society, the teacher preparation community is working to address challenges the nation faces in relation to global competitiveness. This document highlights institutions around the country that are preparing tomorrow’s teachers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Well-known shortages of qualified math and science teachers continue to exist in most states and districts across the country. Thus unprepared teachers are assigned to teach math or science “out of field,” although research shows that students learn more from mathematics and science teachers who studied teaching methods in the subject they teach than from those who did not. In addition, the annual turnover rates of both math and science teachers of 16% are the highest of all fields. Schools, colleges, and departments… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Dialogic Teaching: Evaluation Report and Executive Summary

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The aim of the intervention was to raise levels of engagement and attainment across English, maths, and science in primary schools by improving the quality of teacher and pupil talk in the classroom. The approach, termed “dialogic teaching”, emphasises dialogue through which pupils learn to reason, discuss, argue, and explain in order to develop their higher order thinking as well as their articulacy. The intervention was developed and delivered by a team from the Cambridge Primary Review Trust (CPRT) and the University of York. Year 5 teachers in 38 schools, and a teacher mentor from each school, received resources and training from the delivery team, and then implemented the intervention over the course of the autumn and spring terms in the 2015/2016 school year. Following the intervention,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Mathematics and Science Teacher Academy Evaluation. MSTA Final Report

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In a time of evolving Algebraic standards and expectations for Minnesota teachers and students, the establishment of quality professional development and technical assistance can help educators move more confidently toward greater mathematics understanding and, subsequently, successful teaching and learning. To this end, the Minnesota Department of Education has developed the Math and Science Teacher Academy (MSTA), a statewide infrastructure focused on the improvement of mathematics and science instruction. As external evaluators, Hezel Associates has supported Minnesota’s initiative through formative and summative research since the program’s inception during the summer of 2008. In this report of the MSTA evaluation’s activities, findings, commendations and recommendations, the evaluators focus on presenting new information that has not been presented elsewhere. They combine this new information with key points that were described… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Math and Science. IDRA Focus.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This theme issue contains six articles on improving math and science education for minority group students, particularly language-minority students. “Accelerating Content Area Gains for English Language Learners” (Laura Chris Green) describes the Young Scientists Acquiring English project, which seeks to improve the content-area achievement of inner-city middle school students who are acquiring English by providing inservice teacher training and technical assistance. “Teaching Content Subjects to LEP Students: 20 Tips for Teachers” (Frank Gonzales) focuses on simplification of language rather than content, experiential learning, use of manipulatives and all senses, cooperative learning, higher order thinking skills, explicit review of goals and instructions, and adaptations to classroom communication practices. “MIJA Girls Getting Excited about Math: Assessing the Outcomes of the MIJA Program” (Anna De Luna, Felix Montes) describes the… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Constructivism in Math and Science Education.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Beneath educational pedagogies lie philosophical assumptions about the nature of learning, knowledge, truth and morality. These different philosophies form the foundations of a variety of instructional programs in all academic disciplines. This paper addresses constructivism, a recent attempt to provide a philosophical pedagogy which affects classroom instruction, teacher training, curricululm development, and educational research. It specifically looks at constructivist theory as it relates to mathematics and science education. In so doing, the paper examines: (1) epistemology in the classroom; (2) epistemology in education research; (3) epistemology in mathematics and science (faith and skepticism); (4) Piaget’s constructivist epistemology; and (5) implications for education. A bibliography is included. (TW) Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – College Faculty Understanding of Hybrid Teaching Environments and Their Levels of Trainability by Departments

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: We explored whether the knowledge of hybrid teaching (conceptions) or incorrect knowledge (misconceptions) or lack of knowledge differed among faculty from various teaching areas–education, social sciences, business, art and humanities, and math and sciences–in New York. One hundred twenty-eight faculty members responded to a test of their knowledge of hybrid learning. Using a one-way ANOVA, we found no significant differences between conceptions, misconceptions, and lack of knowledge among faculty. However, their conceptions differences approached significance (p < 0.074). We evaluated faculty levels of trainability. The results of frequency analysis suggested that professors of math and sciences, and business tended to understand more online or hybrid environments than professors of other areas did. However, professors of art and humanities, and social sciences showed high trainability scores. Link til… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Magnitude, Destinations and Determinants of Mathematics and Science Teacher Turnover

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The objective of this study is to use nationally representative data to examine the rates, destinations and sources of math and science teacher turnover. There are four sets of research questions the authors address concerning the departure of mathematics and science teachers from their schools: (1) At what rates do mathematics/science teachers move from or leave their teaching jobs? How do their turnover rates compare to those of other teachers? Have their turnover rates changed over time? What is the magnitude of both math science teacher mobility and attrition?; (2) Which types of schools have higher levels of mathematics/science teacher turnover?; (3) What are the destinations of mathematics/science teachers who move from or leave their teaching jobs? What proportions of those departing move to other schools, quit… Continue Reading
