eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is the first comprehensive effort to assess student achievement in public schools managed by Mosaica Education, Inc., one of the leading private management companies in education, marketing itself to charter boards and school districts since 1997. Schools examined in the report had been managed by Mosaica for at least two years, some for three or more years, to provide an analysis of trends. The first part of the evaluation compares student achievement between 11 charter schools managed by Mosaica during 2000-2001, to other schools in the state with the same grade levels and a comparable percentage of low-income students. In the broadest perspective, this quantitative study seeks to help stakeholders and policymakers understand the factors responsible for Hispanic or Latino student achievement relative to that of comparison groups. The key dependent variables in this study are student achievement in reading and writing, and in math and science. Specifically, the Tomas Rivera Policy Institute (TRPI) examines the impact on reading and writing, math and science achievement levels of computer use both at school and at home, and of teacher preparation for computer-based instruction. It has 23 elementary schools, more than 7,600 students and around 350 teachers. For this study, participants consist of a sample of 117 full-time teachers who were working in third, fourth and fifth grade during the 2006-2007 school year. Dialogues are prompted by a stimulus (for example, a story or a video) and are based around a concept such as ‘truth,’ ‘fairness’ or ‘bullying.’ The aim of P4C is to help children become more willing and able to ask questions, construct arguments, and engage in reasoned discussion. The primary goal of this evaluation was to assess whether a year of P4C instruction for pupils in Years 4 and 5 would lead to higher academic attainment in terms of maths, reading, and writing. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Teachers in Kentucky are using portfolios to determine strengths and weaknesses of individual students. Consequently, instruction is centered totally around the student. The implementation of portfolios sends the message to students that their first efforts should not be their last. Revision is part of improvement, and students are expected to reevaluate so that their portfolios represent their best work. The rationale and procedures for using mathematics and writing portfolios in Kentucky schools are explored. The use of portfolios grows from the Kentucky Educational Reform Act and is part of the performance based assessment mandated in 1992. Included in this challenge is the issue of teacher compensation and how it has evolved with the efforts of providing quality instruction in order to improve the performance of students. Texas has developed and implemented innovative pay systems that focus on student achievement through the process of improving teacher quality. Most recently, the 79th Legislature of Texas passed House Bill One which funded the largest investment in teacher incentives with two teacher incentive programs that would provide $320 million annually to eligible school districts and campuses.
