tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract In a recent statement, the American Statistical Association (ASA) discusses the use of value-added measurement to evaluate teacher quality. We present our views on the issues raised by the ASA, in light of research we and others have done on this subject. We highlight areas of agreement with the ASA statement, clarify which issues raised by the ASA have been largely resolved, and point to those issues which should be a priority for future research. tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT In this study we used an assessment tool evaluated in a previous study to identify students who were at-risk of not being successful in our introductory statistics course. We then required these students to attend peer tutoring, early in the semester, as an intervention. While we saw a significant increase in student success for all students in this study compared with the previous study, the at-risk students who completed the required tutoring had a significantly higher increase in success than their peers. tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT It is very important for medical professionals and medical researchers to be literate in statistics. However, we have found that the degree of literacy that is required should not be identical for every statistical competency or even for every learner. We first begin by describing why the development, teaching, and assessment of statistical competencies for medical professionals and medical researchers are critical tasks. We next review our three substantial efforts at developing a comprehensive list of statistical competencies that can be used as a guide for what medical research learners should know about statistics, for curricular development, and for assessment of statistical education. We then summarize the origin and the inclusion of the statistical competency items. We follow… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: District and state education leaders frequently use screening assessments to identify students who are at risk of performing poorly on end-of-year achievement tests. This study examines the use of a universal screening assessment of reading skills for early identification of students at risk of low achievement on nationally normed tests of reading and math and provides support for the interpretation of screening scores to inform instruction. Several members of the Regional Educational Laboratory Southeast Improving Literacy Alliance already use a reading screening assessment–the Florida Center for Reading Research Reading Assessment (FRA)–for all students in grades 3-8 to identify students who may be at risk of poor end-of-year reading outcomes. To gain more information to drive instruction without students having to spend more time taking tests, these alliance… Continue Reading →

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. ABSTRACT English language learners are a growing demographic in secondary, two-year, four-year and research institutions where many students encounter their first course in statistics. In the statistics education literature, recent calls have been made to improve statistical education for underserved student populations, including English Language Learners (ELLs). Some have investigated how ELLs interpret instructional material and classroom practices in the statistics classroom. This study uses a sequential mixed methods approach to investigate how Spanish-speaking ELLs may respond differently to… Continue Reading →

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Abstract We performed an empirical study of the perceived quality of scientific graphics produced by beginning R users in two plotting systems: the base graphics package (“base R”) and the ggplot2 add-on package. In our experiment, students taking a data science course on the Coursera platform were randomized to complete identical plotting exercises using either base R or ggplot2. This exercise involved creating two plots: one bivariate scatterplot and one plot of a multivariate relationship that necessitated using color… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The research aims to reveal the specific way to evaluate learning mathematics, so that we get the “measuring tool” for the achievement of learners in mathematics that reflect their level of understanding by score (mark), which we trust it with high degree. The behavior of the learner can be measured by a professional way to build the test, through a sequence of steps that make the mark obtained has full confidence, and reflect the real level of the learner. tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract As the demand for skilled data scientists has grown, university level statistics and data science courses have become more rigorous in training students to understand and utilize the tools that their future careers will likely require. However, the mechanisms to assess students’ use of these tools while they are learning to use them are not well defined. As such, a framework to assess statistical computing actions was created. Using task-based interviews of students who completed a second course in statistics, the framework was used to determine the ways in which students utilize statistical computing tools, specifically R, while going through problem solving phases. Patterns that emerged are discussed. Link til kilde

sciencedirect.com har udgivet: Highlights • Supportive cycles of relational and practical learning experiences are needed for deepening assessment learning. • Assessment approaches shifted to research-based practices via coursework/practicum cycles and peer/mentor feedback. • Findings confirmed Fink’s (2003) findings that significant learning involves interactive and non-hierarchical experiences. • Data suggest teacher candidates need more explicit attention on learning how to learn. Abstract Teacher candidates are required to learn substantial fundamental and practical knowledge often within short, fast-paced initial teacher education (ITE) programs. This study examined assessment education through a case study of 35 teacher candidates enrolled in an assessment/evaluation concentration at one Canadian institution. Using a slow movement framework with Fink’s (2013) significant learning experiences taxonomy, pedagogies were analyzed that provoked slow and significant learning. Findings from multiple data sources revealed… Continue Reading →
