Eric.ed.gov – MATHCOUNTS School Handbook: Math Is Not a Spectator Sport, ’98-’99.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: MATHCOUNTS is a national coaching and competition program designed to stimulate 7th- and 8th-grade students’ interest and achievement in mathematics. Teachers and volunteers coach students beginning each fall and continuing throughout the year. Participating schools can select individuals or four-person teams to compete in on-site competitions. Students compete in local meets in February, winners progress to state contests in March, and the top four scorers and top coach at the state competition represent their state at the national finals in May. Each year the MATHCOUNTS question writing committee selects and announces a special topic designed to stimulate student interest in mathematics. The special topic for the 1998-99 MATHCOUNTS program is Investigation and Exploration. This book provides detailed information about the competition, activities, and suggested workouts that can… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Effects of a Peer Tutoring Program on Math Fact Recall and Generalization.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study used a multiple-baseline-across-subjects design to assess the effectiveness of a peer tutoring intervention for fluency in basic math facts. Specifically, this study assessed the rate of recall of multiplication facts throughout the intervention period and determined whether the progress was matched by improvement in actual classwork. In addition, maintenance of gains in fluency and classwork were assessed. The students targeted were fourth- and fifth-graders (n=8) selected from a combined classroom in an Appalachian elementary school. Children with mild disabilities were included in this classroom. Teacher recommendations along with a multiplication facts probe were used to select tutors and tutees. Baseline data were collected from tutees before intervention occurred. Tutors were trained by the experimenter (3 sessions), then were assigned a tutee. Peer tutoring sessions occurred… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Workplace Literacy Curriculum: A Competency-Based Approach for ESL, Math, & Reading.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This document provides a curriculum that is comprised of workplace-specific literacy methods, materials, and assessment techniques that are customized yet broadly applicable. A process section introduces the curriculum by describing its development process. It discusses staff development, needs assessment, competency development, materials selection, and instruction. The section concludes with an evaluation of the curriculum development process. The product section consists of the curriculum itself, with a statement of philosophy and goals, student profiles, the scope of instruction, assessment and evaluation strategies, instructional techniques, course outlines, and sample lesson plans. Six course outlines (two in each area) are provided: English as a second language, general math, and reading/writing. Lists of subject area competencies are provided. Each course outline states the competency and then lists basic skills it encompassed,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Beginning Reading and Math in PS 133, New York City. A Report.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This booklet describes the program in Harlem (PS 133) which is based upon Dr. Caleb Gattegno’s reading and mathematics in color. The program was primarily intended to test the teaching of Gattegno’s methods and materials. PS 133 was considered to be a good site for the program because it was stable, pedagogically traditional, and staffed by a large number of experienced teachers and a principal who was known to be a dedicated, competent administrator. In Gattegno’s reading program, color is used only for the purpose of introducing words, and once sounds are mastered, color is discarded. The use of color simulates a phonetic language. All groups of letters with the identical sound are represented by the same color. Thus the “o” in “so,””know,” and “though” belong to… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Learning Information System Effects on Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Scores for five subjects (Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies in grades 2 through 8) from the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program were analyzed for several hundred Tennessee grade schools. Schools which owned the Accelerated Reader learning information system (a computer program which allows teachers to monitor and manage student literature-based reading) were compared with schools that had not purchased AR. Schools that owned AR outperformed others in all grades and subjects. (Contains five figures and five tables of data; an appendix contains a brief introduction to the Accelerated Reader.) Eric.ed.gov – Transforming the “Underachieving” Math Curriculum. ASCD Curriculum Update.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report discusses the change in mathematics curriculum influenced by researchers, society, and the mathematics field. Many research results suggest that students should learn mathematics by experience. Students’ misconceptions may be formed because of the sudden shift from arithmetic to algebra. Up to the eighth grade, mathematical content has been heavily repeated. For more of the active doing of mathematics, four common activities (abstracting, inventing, proving, and applying) and four processes (generalizing, conjecturing, convincing, and specializing) are recommended. The curriculum standards developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the curriculum framework developed by the National Academy of Sciences, some projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project, and other projects are described. Constraints against curricular change are listed and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Application of Videodisc Technology to the Diagnosis of Math Skills.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Briefly presented are the rationale and procedures used to develop and validate an interactive videodisc program to assist in diagnosing difficulties in mathematics in grades 1-3. The mathematics assessment program is described as 408 criterion-referenced items divided into seven strands. Questions are administered until a student makes three consecutive errors; then the student is branched to the next section in a strand. At the teacher’s option, the test can be administered in either English or Spanish. Information is also included on equipment configurations possible among videodisc players, microcomputers, touch screens, and printers, and disc capacity is noted. Finally, comments on formative evaluation needs are given. (MNS) Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Teaching Elementary School Math, Competency-Based Approach. Adams State College.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The stated goals for the nine modules in this elementary math cluster, which is part of a series developed for the Adams State College Teacher Corps program, are that the intern will: (a) understand the scope and sequence of topics in elementary mathematics, (b) be familiar with a wide variety of activities and materials for use in a mathematics laboratory approach, (c) know various alternative approaches to teaching given mathematics topics, (d) utilize methods which convey understanding of concept rather than rote memorization, (e) realize that pupil attitudes toward a subject are as important as aptitude, (f) understand the relationship between mathematics and other elementary school curricula, and (g) know the relevance of prevalent learning theories to the specific area of mathematics. Each module contains a statement… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Gifted Females Can Be Supported in Math and Science: A Proposal for Mentoring in Secondary Schools.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper addresses the personological aspects relative to male and female success in two subject areas (math and science) and addresses specific concerns in the area of mentoring. Personality factors operative for success in math and science are reviewed, and teachers are advised to encourage, support, and facilitate those personality traits which appear to augur for success. One particular technique for encouraging females to pursue their interests is mentoring. The need of the mentor to nurture, encourage, and develop certain salient personality traits is emphasized. Reasons why bright individuals (both females and males) do not succeed are listed, such as lack of product orientation and capitalizing on the wrong abilities. Guidelines are presented for mentoring creatively gifted youth. Mentors are urged to guide their female protegees to… Continue Reading
