Her substantial appendices, nearly twice the length of the original work, contain an account of the principles of the machine, along with a table often described as ‘the first computer program’. In this paper we look at Lovelace’s education before 1840, which encompassed older traditions of practical geometry; newer textbooks influenced by continental approaches; wide reading; and a fascination with machinery. We employed Tall’s framework of three worlds of mathematical thinking as well as Piaget’s notion of accommodation to theoretically study the narratives. This paper reveals the pedagogical challenges of proving an elegant theory as the events unfolded. Although the mathematician was conscious of the students’ abilities as he carefully made the path accessible, the disparity between the mind of the mathematician and the student became apparent. This study explores the extent to which K-8 math teachers’–who teach in high-poverty urban schools–professional background, motivational beliefs, and mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) have an impact on students’ math achievement. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) results indicated that although students’ prior mathematics achievement was the most determining factor of their subsequent math achievement, teachers’ MKT and holding a bachelor’s degree in mathematics had significant positive effects on students’ math achievement.
