Eric.ed.gov – “I Was in Year 5 and I Failed Maths”: Identifying the Range and Causes of Maths Anxiety in First Year Pre-Service Teachers

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Mathematics anxiety affects primary pre-service teachers’ engagement with and future teaching of mathematics. The study aimed to assess the level and range of mathematics anxiety in first year pre-service teachers entering their teacher education course, and to investigate the sources of this anxiety as perceived and identified by them. Data collection methods included the RMARS survey, and Critical Incident Technique. The results indicate that the most common negative impacts on pre-service teacher mathematical self-concept involved experiences with teachers. However, their current mathematics anxiety is most commonly aroused under testing or evaluation situations. Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – “I Learned Quite a Lot of the Maths Stuff Now That I Think of It”: Maori Medium Students Reflecting on Their Initial Teacher Education

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Research involving preservice or initial teacher education (ITE) indicates that mathematics education is a vital component of study. Little is known however, of indigenous student views of their compulsory mathematics education courses for a teaching degree. This research contributes to that knowledge space as it explores Maori medium ITE students’ perceptions of mathematics education in Aotearoa New Zealand. A thematic and qualitative analysis of a focused group discussion provides insights into key factors that students reported as significant links between their university and practicum experiences (teaching practice in schools). Some suggestions for strengthening that programme were also expressed. Findings indicate that factors linked to teacher “cultural competencies”, including an ethic of care, respectful relationships, revision of content knowledge, language learning, assessment practices, exposure to different ideas and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Targeted School-Based Interventions Improve Achievement in Reading and Maths for At-Risk Students in Grades 7-12. Plain Language Summary. Education

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This Campbell systematic review examines the effects of targeted school-based interventions on standardised tests in reading and maths. The review analyses evidence from 71 studies, 52 of which are randomised controlled trials. School-based interventions targeting students with, or at risk of, academic difficulties in Grades 7-12 have on average positive effects on standardised tests in reading and maths. The most effective interventions have the potential to considerably decrease the gap between at-risk and not-at-risk students. Effects vary substantially between interventions, however, and the evidence for using certain instructional methods or targeting certain domains is weaker. This review examines the effects of a broad range of school-based interventions targeting students with, or at risk of, academic difficulties on standardised tests in reading and maths. Included interventions changed instructional… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – It’s Only Maths: The Potential Impact of a Mentoring Project to Ameliorate Mathematics Anxiety in Teacher Education Students

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper presents initial data from a study being undertaken into the potential effects of a mentoring program for teacher education students who have self-identified as suffering from mathematics anxiety. The first phase of the study saw 8 primary teacher education students opt into a program matching them in pairs with 4 mentor teachers who had been selected by their principals after meeting 6 criteria that identified them as highly capable mentors in mathematics education. The mentees worked with the mentors in classrooms for 8 weeks. After the program the students were interviewed. Data from these students is explored here with particular emphasis on an artefact presented by one of the students about her journey through the process. Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Affordable Online Maths Tuition: Evaluation Report and Executive Summary

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: “Affordable Online Maths Tuition” is a one-to-one tutoring programme where pupils receive maths tuition over the internet from trained maths graduates in India and Sri Lanka. It is delivered by the organisation Third Space Learning (TSL). Tutors and pupils communicate using video calling and a secure virtual classroom. Before each session, the pupils’ normal classroom teachers are able to select lessons from TSL’s maths curriculum to target individual learning issues. The intervention was targeted at Year 6 pupils who were working at Key Stage (KS) 2 level 3 or an insecure KS2 level 4, and was delivered over 27 weeks from September 2014 to May 2015 by (TSL) in an initial testing phase, with support from Nesta and Nominet Trust. The impact of the intervention was evaluated… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Strengthening Maths Learning Dispositions through ‘Math Clubs’

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this paper, I argue that the establishment of after-school mathematics clubs in early grades holds rich potential for supporting the development of increasingly participatory and sensemaking maths learning dispositions. Within the South African Numeracy Chair project, lead by the author, multiple after-school mathematics clubs have been set up for learners in Grades 3-6 across Eastern Cape schools. These clubs are a complementary initiative to teacher development, aimed at improving low levels of numeracy learning across the majority of schools in the province. Two sources of data, learner interviews and teacher questionnaires, from one case study club, are shared in this article to illuminate the potential such clubs hold in developing increasingly participatory mathematics learning dispositions. Eric.ed.gov – Maths Games: A Universal Design Approach to Mathematical Reasoning

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Providing students with an opportunity to explore mathematical content through games allows teachers to include tasks that: (1) present alternative representations of the content; (2) welcome various expressions of mathematical reasoning; and (3) incorporate variations that empower all students to engage in the problem solving process. Games not only motivate students to learn mathematical concepts, but games also embody the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)–a framework designed to optimise instructional decisions to meet students’ needs. In this article, the authors Games not only motivate students to learn mathematical concepts, but games also embody the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)–a framework designed to optimise instructional decisions to meet students’ needs. Eric.ed.gov – Visual Images Related to Angle Concept in the 5th Grade Maths Coursebooks

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: There are different perspectives in the literature on the examination of visual images used in course books. In this study, illustrations from the visuals used in geometry in the lower learning area of school mathematics were examined and summarized first by researchers and then by teachers and students. For many students, the mathematics coursebook is the first material they encounter in understanding the course content and conveying the mathematics culture. In this study, the illustrations related to the concept of Angle used in mathematics coursebook, two books published abroad, two books published in Turkey, for 5th-grade students were analyzed. The type of research is Document Analysis and the illustrations were examined in qualitative and quantitative terms. In this way, the study aimed to analyze the contribution of… Continue Reading
