Eric.ed.gov – Parent Involvement, Academic Achievement and the Role of Student Attitudes and Behaviors as Mediators

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Previous research shows inconsistent relationships between parent involvement and academic achievement and often asks why such inconsistencies occur. The research proposes a theoretical model that separates parent involvement into those practices linking parents to children and those practices linking parents to other adults in the school environment. The researcher hypothesizes that parent-child (i.e. discussion and monitoring) and parent-school (i.e. educational support strategies and Parent Teacher Organization involvement) practices will differentially affect student attitudes (educational expectations), behaviors (absenteeism, homework, truancy), and achievement (math and science). Using a national survey conducted in the United States of schools and students, the National Education Longitudinal Study (NELS:88), The research estimates a series of hierarchical models to test the direct and indirect effects of parent involvement on student attitudinal, behavioral and academic… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Senior Level Administrators and HBCUs: The Role of Support for Black Women’s Success in STEM

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: While it is important for college and university senior administrators to embrace the traditional roles of their administrative positions, senior administrators’ interactions with students also shape institutional culture, students’ engagement, and ultimately play a role in students’ motivation to succeed. This engagement is especially evident in the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) context as senior administrators’ engagement with students can directly or indirectly affect how students perceive themselves and their ability to succeed. This article aims to illuminate the role that HBCU senior level administrators play in students’ motivation toward success. We also highlight the notion that senior level administrators’ role in organizational culture ultimately led historically-disempowered Black women students toward success in even the most historically inaccessible pathways in the science, technology, engineering, and math… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – A First Examination of the Role of the International Child Development Programme in School Achievement

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to explore whether the classroom implementation of the International Child Development Programme (ICDP) for secondary school students (grade 9) was linked to better school achievement. The goal of the ICDP is to increase school achievement by promoting positive teacher-student relationships. The study, performed in Sweden, applied a pre–post design (four years) with matched intervention and control schools (N = 148). The post-intervention assessments showed that there were significant differences in school achievement in Grade 9 between the intervention school and the control school. Specifically, a greater proportion of students at the intervention school demonstrated improvement in school subjects and achieved the competency requirements to enter an upper secondary school programme. Based on the results,… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The role of students’ approaches in foreign language learning

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The purpose of the study is to analyse how second language learning is supported by language learning strategies (LLS) and various learning approaches, namely, self-efficacy, instrumental motivation, effort and perseverance, and preferences for cooperative or competitive learning. The sample of the research was composed of students in Hungary in Years 5–8 (10–14-year olds, N = 1600). Two questionnaires were used to collect the data: an adapted version of Oxford’s “Strategies Inventory for Language Learning” (SILL) questionnaire and the “Student Characteristics as Learners” questionnaire. A path analysis showed that learning components can be explained differently via language learning strategies and learning approaches. Our results have confirmed our hypotheses that strategy use significantly influences several learning approaches in the sample. Students,… Continue Reading
