Eric.ed.gov – Using Data to Inform Decisions: How Teachers Use Data to Inform Practice and Improve Student Performance in Mathematics

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The last two decades have witnessed a vast expansion in the use of education data to improve classroom instruction and raise student achievement. Schools and districts face important challenges in implementing increased data use for instructional improvement. One key challenge is the need for teachers and administrators to have “data literacy”–the skills to analyze data, and to use a variety of data sources to refine and improve instruction. Data systems and data initiatives have grown at a much faster pace than educator training around data use. This reality justifies the evaluation of a program such as TERC’s Using Data, which aims to provide teachers with the needed training. A table and figure are appended. Using school-level random assignment, this study seeks to estimate the causal impact of… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Technological and pedagogical support for pre-service teachers’ lesson planning

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Successful use of ICT in the classroom requires thoughtful integration of technology and pedagogical processes during lesson preparation. This study investigated whether the information format of technological and pedagogical support affects pre-service teachers’ technology integration in lesson plans. One group of pre-service teachers (n = 37) received support materials that presented technological, pedagogical and content information separately; another group (n = 36) received a version of these materials in which the technological and pedagogical information was integrated. Pre-service teachers used these support materials to create a technology-infused lesson plan. As expected, the pre-service teachers who received integrated support had relatively more design justifications in which technology and pedagogy were combined than their peers from the separate support group.… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Saudi Arabian science and mathematics teachers’ attitudes toward integrating STEM in teaching before and after participating in a professional development program

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract For the advancement of current and future economic and overall well-being to occur, STEM professionals are highly needed. STEM education is an approach that integrates science, technology, engineering and mathematics curricula into one interdisciplinary curriculum. In the context of STEM education, learners acquire deep and critical thinking abilities, which help them become creative and analytic thinkers, and hence innovators in their careers. For this to happen, the teacher must be trained to successfully design and effectively teach an integrated STEM curriculum. The purpose of this study was to analyze Saudi Arabian science and mathematics teachers’ attitudes toward integrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in teaching before and after they participated in a short professional development program focused… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Construction and validation of Iranian EFL teachers’ teaching motivation scale

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract During the last few decades, motivation to learn English has become an interesting research area. However, the studies on EFL teachers’ motivations for choosing teaching as their career, to the present date, are scanty. The present study was an attempt to construct and validate a teaching motivation scale for EFL teachers. In the qualitative results phase, the main motivations for selecting teaching were extracted and categorized into motivational types: intrinsic and extrinsic. Results of quantitative phase showed that the developed method enjoyed an acceptable construct validity. The findings can be used by teacher trainers and organizations involved in recruiting EFL teachers. Link til kilde

Abstract Reflecting growing emphasis on data analysis and statistical thinking in the information age, mathematics curriculum standards in the U.S. have recently increased expectations for student learning in the domain of statistics and probability. More than 180 teachers in 36 public school districts in Florida applied for a two-week summer institute designed to increase teachers’ content and pedagogical content knowledge in statistics and probability. Individual teachers were assigned at random to a treatment or business-as-usual comparison group. The two-week… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Teachers’ collective professional development in school: A review study

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The aim of the study has been to describe, analyse and discuss the latest research findings on the professional development that is accomplished through collective and cooperative processes among teachers. The research question addressed in this article is: “In which ways do professional development and learning occur in schools, and which improvements may be identified in the practices of teachers related to professional development and learning?”. The theoretical framework for the research is cultural historical activity theory (CHAT). In the CHAT perspective, knowledge is perceived as constructions of meaning and understanding within social interaction. The social interactions and surroundings are seen as decisive for teachers’ (in this case) learning and development. The main argument is that teachers’ professional… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Evaluating the flipped classroom approach in Asian higher education: Perspectives from students and teachers

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The flipped classroom approach has been gaining substantial momentum and is well received in Asia. Using a qualitative approach, this study examined how the flipped classroom approach affects the teaching and learning experiences of students and teachers in Asian higher education. Five Faculty of Education courses were examined in this study. Five individual interviews were conducted with the course instructors and three focus-group interviews were conducted with a total of 12 students. Data was analysed by thematic analysis. Using the self-determination theory (SDT) as a theoretical framework, five themes emerged. The results of this study suggest that the flipped classroom approach has substantial potential to fulfil the three basic cognitive needs among university students in the field of… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Reducing Mathematics Anxiety: The Ways Implemented by Teachers at Primary Schools

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This research is an investigation of ‘reducing mathematics anxiety: the ways implemented by teachers at primary schools in Turkey’. This study is needed to understand the ways which teachers implement to reduce the level of anxiety that pupils face in mathematics. In order to get sufficient data a qualitative research methodology was preferred in this study. The sample which purposively selected was comprised of fifty teachers teaching 4th and 5th graders at primary schools in Turkey. The results revealed that to reduce pupils’ anxiety in mathematics, teachers chose such ways as motivating pupils, making math relevant, reviewing the given topic by examples and exercises, using games and also getting support from parents. It was also found that while using these given strategies, teachers did not evaluate whether… Continue Reading
