eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report examines the demand for teachers, teacher turnover, and teacher education in Alaska. Surveys were conducted with school district personnel directors, directors of Alaska teacher education programs, teachers who exited Alaska schools in 2001, and rural and urban instructional aides. Alaska is facing teacher shortages, but these are confined to certain specializations–particularly special education and secondary math and science–and a few rural districts. Since most of Alaska’s teachers come from outside the state, the state is particularly vulnerable to the vicissitudes of the national teacher labor market. In addition, cost-of-living adjusted salaries for Alaska teachers have declined in the past decade. Specifically, it addresses REAP Flex, a program that allows rural districts additional control over how to spend portions of their federal funding. REAP Flex is part of a series of NCLB flexibility initiatives aimed at rural schools. The four primary findings of this study were: (1) Half of eligible districts participated in the REAP Flex program; (2) REAP Flex authority was most often used to provide additional funds for services under Title I, Part A. Applying a two-stage mixed methods research design, the qualitative and quantitative data were obtained by interviews with experts in engineering education followed by a multilayered analysis of students’ projects. The study included 190 engineering students who studied the same course, half via a hybrid approach and half via a massive open online course (MOOC). Findings identified innovation type, product necessity, STEM interdisciplinary, and market readiness, as central constructs for assessing the innovation level of students’ projects.
