The four common syndromes identified with pupils who were experiencing a lack of success in mathematics were: (1) a lack of an adequate college or high school background in mathematics; (2) the tendency to feel that because they completed homework problems they really “knew their mathematics,”; (3) the inability to apply appropriate reading-learning strategies to their mathematics studies; and (4) a feeling of hostility over mathematics classes and anxiety over tests. These students are referred to as “underdeveloped learners,” who did not know how to study and learn mathematics. Eric.ed.gov – The Effects of a Peer Tutoring Program on Math Fact Recall and Generalization.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study used a multiple-baseline-across-subjects design to assess the effectiveness of a peer tutoring intervention for fluency in basic math facts. Specifically, this study assessed the rate of recall of multiplication facts throughout the intervention period and determined whether the progress was matched by improvement in actual classwork. In addition, maintenance of gains in fluency and classwork were assessed. The students targeted were fourth- and fifth-graders (n=8) selected from a combined classroom in an Appalachian elementary school. Children with mild disabilities were included in this classroom. Teacher recommendations along with a multiplication facts probe were used to select tutors and tutees. Baseline data were collected from tutees before intervention occurred. The program was primarily intended to test the teaching of Gattegno’s methods and materials. PS 133 was considered to be a good site for the program because it was stable, pedagogically traditional, and staffed by a large number of experienced teachers and a principal who was known to be a dedicated, competent administrator. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Scores for five subjects (Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies in grades 2 through 8) from the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program were analyzed for several hundred Tennessee grade schools. Schools which owned the Accelerated Reader learning information system (a computer program which allows teachers to monitor and manage student literature-based reading) were compared with schools that had not purchased AR.
