eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this study a survey instrument was developed to test elementary teachers’ attitudes towards incorporating manipulatives in their math lessons frequently. Though the benefits of using math manipulatives has been reported, there seems to be a disconnect between the benefits of manipulative use and the number of teachers integrating them in their lessons on a daily basis. In this study a total of 22 regular education teachers in kindergarten through sixth grade and five learning support teachers in grades first through sixth from a rural elementary school were given a survey instrument to test its validity and reveal some trends in teachers’ views on manipulative use as well as possible causation for their views. Findings from the study show that though many teachers feel comfortable using and… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Introduction: This article, based on a study of 196 teachers of students with visual impairments, reports on the experiences with and opinions related to their decisions about instructing their students who are blind or have low vision in the abacus. Methods: The participants completed an online survey on how they decide which students should be taught abacus computation skills and which skills they teach. Data were also gathered on those who reported that they did not teach computation with the abacus. Results: The participants resided in the United States and Canada and had various numbers of years of teaching experience. More than two-thirds of those who reported that they taught abacus computation skills indicated that they began instruction when their students were between preschool and the second… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Considering the performances of the students in the Timss and Pisa examinations, it is seen that they can not solve the problems, do not animate the objects they can not ask geometry questions in three dimensions and can not understand them. For this reason, origami lessons should be put into teacher training programs. Secondary teacher trainees were examined in this study according to their views about using origami activities in maths courses. This qualitative study was carried out with 18 secondary mathematics teacher trainees. Data were gathered by semi-structured interview and 3D tangible materials. Findings revealed that prospective teacher candidates can associate large quantities of mathematical and geometric concepts with some achievements and that they have a constructive view on origami activities. However, it was seen that… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Created by teachers for teachers, the Math Academy tools and activities included in this booklet were designed to create hands-on activities and a fun learning environment for the teaching of mathematics to the students. This booklet contains the “Math Academy–Dining Out! Explorations in Fractions, Decimals, and Percents,” which teachers can use to enhance their math instruction while staying true to the academic rigor required by the state standards framework. Included in this booklet are activities the author used for the restaurant Math Academy. This Math Academy is designed to help students understand how to use fractions, decimals, and percents in the context of restaurants and money. In this day of credit and gift cards, children do not have as many real-life opportunities to count money and make… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Using a Mixed Methods approach, this study investigated changes in levels of self-efficacy among elementary preservice teachers following a semester course on teaching elementary students’ mathematics. Participants in this study included 347 preservice elementary teachers at a mid-size regional university who had just completed an elementary mathematics methods course. The data were collected from several semester groups. The instruments used were the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Instrument, interview data, and observation data collected during the clinical experience. The focus of this study was to compare the changes in teacher self-efficacy following a methods course that emphasized hands-on mathematics instruction with manipulatives by means of the 5E instructional format. The results of the paired-samples t-test indicated that there was a significant difference in the preservice elementary teachers’ self-efficacy… Continue Reading →

This booklet contains the “Math Academy–Let’s Go to the Mall! Explorations in Combinatorics,” which teachers can use to enhance their math instruction while staying true to the academic rigor required by the state standards framework. Included in this booklet are activities the author used for the combinations and permutations Math Academy. This Math Academy is designed to help students understand the connection between various kinds of combinations (multiplication principle and choose numbers) and permutations. Teachers may choose to implement a grade-level or school-wide Math Academy, or they may prefer to implement these activities… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The role of manipulative materials in mathematics can be a contentious one. It seems that in the mind of some teachers, manipulatives are fine in the early years but have no place in a rigorous maths classroom as the students get older. It is a topic worth our consideration. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Approximately 93 percent of Americans indicate that they experience some level of math anxiety. Math anxiety is defined as negative emotions that interfere with the solving of mathematical problems. Studies have found that some students who perform poorly on math assessments actually have a full understanding of the concepts being tested; however, their anxiety interferes with their ability to solve mathematical problems. Researchers believe that implementation of strategies to prevent or reduce math anxiety will improve the math achievement of many students. This Information Capsule summarizes strategies that teachers, parents, and students can use to prevent or reduce math anxiety. Link til kilde

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A series of observations in math classrooms revealed a pervasive problem of “re-teaching”. It matters little the subject; before the teacher can begin teaching new material, basic skills often have to be re-taught before the lesson can move forward. Perhaps some methods are more effective than others in the classroom. Consequently, this study addressed two research questions: Q1: What teaching strategies are considered preferential by math teachers for teaching math concepts? Q2: Do teacher demographics influence those teacher preferences? Consequently, this study seeks to add to the existing literature regarding math teacher preferences for teaching the Pythagorean Theorem to high achieving and low achieving secondary mathematics students. Thirty mathematics teachers were asked to rate their preferences of six research-based standards with respect to teaching a specific math… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Today’s society places a lot of pressure on schools, teachers, and students to improve test scores. This paper discusses the possibility of using mathematical manipulatives to improve student test scores and students’ attitudes towards mathematics. Forty-three Grade 2 students with age ranges between six and eight from a rural town in Saskatchewan were selected. They were divided randomly into two groups: the treatment group (n = 22) and the control group (n = 21) and their pre- and post-test scores compared. Findings supported the hypothesis that students in the treatment group who received the math intervention obtained higher post-test scores in comparison to their classmates in the control group.
