Eric.ed.gov – Experimental Methods and Results in a Study of PBS TeacherLine Math Courses

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) sought to build on the strengths of high quality professional development through an online venture funded under the U.S. Department of Education’s Ready To Teach (RTT) program. PBS TeacherLine was designed to provide high-quality, facilitated online professional development for K-12 teachers nationwide. Through PBS TeacherLine, more than 20,000 educators have participated in 90 online, facilitated courses in reading, mathematics, science, instructional strategies, instructional technology, and curriculum mapping. To what extent has PBS TeacherLine been successful in creating an online model of teacher professional development that gets to the heart of education needs–impacting teacher beliefs, classroom instruction, and student learning? This paper presents the results from one component of the comprehensive external evaluation of PBS TeacherLine: an experimental study that unfolded in the… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Discourse Time! Developing Argumentative Literacy in the Math Classroom

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this article is to describe Discourse Time (D.T.), a teaching practice that aims to integrate argumentative literacy, the third piece of the literacy puzzle, into math learning environments. Snapshots from a tenth grade classroom at Skyview Academy High School in Thornton, Colorado is used to paint a vivid picture of what D.T. looks and feels like in addition to the way it impacts student learning. Eric.ed.gov – Logics of “Good Teaching”: Exploring Mathematics Education in Primary School in Sweden

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The public and academic debate about mathematics education has been intensified during the last decade. In relation to this it is important to investigate what ideas concerning mathematics education that are expressed by teachers and students. The aim of this article is to study how teachers and students in primary school talk about the math book and to emphasize, discuss and problematize emerging discourses. The article is part of a larger project about mathematical education. Data consists of group conversations with 120 students and 8 teachers in two elementary schools in Sweden. The math project was supported by the National Agency for Education 2010-2012. All together 17 hours of video and audio documentation were produced. The theoretical framework is built on poststructuralist and social constructionist theory and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Student Achievement Data and Findings, as Reported in Math and Science Partnerships’ Annual and Evaluation Reports

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A primary feature of the Math and Science Partnership Program Evaluation (MSP PE) is the examination of K-12 student achievement changes associated with the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Math and Science Partnership (MSP) Program. This article describes one of three complementary assessments of K-12 student achievement being conducted by the MSP-PE, and consists of a synthesis of student achievement findings reported by the MSP projects themselves (the other two assessments also are described in this volume). The assessment described in this article covers 39 of the 48 MSP project awards made by NSF from 2002 to 2004. Data sources included the MSP projects’ annual and evaluation reports submitted to NSF through 2006-07 and research manuscripts developed by the MSPs for presentation at three MSP evaluation conferences. A… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – A Comparative Study on Math’s Education Rendered in the Two Communities on the Island of Cyprus

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The island of Cyprus embodies two distinct communities having their own systems of education. On the road to EU certain parallelisms need to be set as it is the goal of this study on math’s education. This paper will concentrate on K1-K12 math’s education. The topics to be dealt with will cover math’s curriculum at all levels; weekly distribution of math classes, as well as their proportion to the other courses offered. Students are expected to be more creative in class rather than resorting to rote learning even in math education. The study will also try to shed light on class size. Finally the math teachers and their educational background will be looked into so as to check into their prior math knowledge. The main goal is… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Opening the Classroom Door: Professional Learning Communities in the Math and Science Partnership Program

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This article looks at how professional learning communities (PLCs) have become an operational approach for professional development with potential to de-isolate the teaching experience in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The authors offer a short synopsis of the intellectual origins of PLCs, provide multiple examples of PLCs employed in projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) through its Math and Science Partnership (MSP) program, and consider benefits for varied aspects of the teaching and learning environment. Eric.ed.gov – Tackling the STEM Crisis: Five Steps Your State Can Take to Improve the Quality and Quantity of its K-12 Math and Science Teachers

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: State laws and regulations can either help or hinder the ability of school districts to hire effective teachers for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects. State officials wanting to tackle this critical problem need to begin with a thorough review of relevant policies, asking themselves: “Are we part of the problem, and how do we become part of the solution?” This report presents five steps that states can take to improve the quality and quantity of its K12 math and science teachers: (1) raise standards for what it takes to get into an education school; (2) improve the quality of undergraduate preparation; (3) recognize the need for creative and diverse solutions; (4) send qualified teachers to the schools that most need them; and (5) remember it… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Mathematics and Outdoor Photography Experience — Exploration of an Approach to Mathematical Education, Based on the Theory of Dewey’s Aesthetics

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Based on Dewey’s theory of art, aesthetics, and experiences and photographer Barnbaums’ writing about expanded perception through photography, we conducted a one-day experimental mathematics education unit. Using photography in outdoor conditions had a positive impact on teacher students’ perception of the use of photography for teaching mathematics. To study the changes in students’ visual attention deeper, we used gaze-tracking to analyse one student’s visual attention when walking outdoors after the activity. The gaze data indicated that more visual attention was given to objects he had photographed or discussed during the group activity in comparison to other objects. Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Triad Simultaneous Renewal: A Marriage with Teacher Education/Science & Math and PreK-12.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper outlines how shared decision making among teacher education faculty, preK-12 educators, and the Science and Mathematics faculty at Wright State University successfully led to the preparation of quality educators. It offers a historical overview of the Wright State redesign efforts, then: examines the university’s collaboration for teacher content preparation; clarifies how learned society guidelines and state teacher performance requirements (Praxis III) are integrated into an electronic portfolio template; demonstrates the documentation of content and teaching proficiency via electronic portfolios; and presents the evaluation process used in a multi-faceted renewal project. It describes: the university-school district partnership agreement; the Professional Educator Program (the culmination of the college’s efforts to be a collaborative partner in teacher preparation and professional development of K-12 practitioners); lessons learned; experiences using… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Effect of Instructional Material Design Process to Mathematics Teacher Candidates’ TPACK

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: It is inevitable to receive technology support for teacher training activities in this new era in which technology is at large in our lives. Sufficiency in terms of TPACK (Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge) is among the basic conditions for being qualified teachers. For this reason, activities for teacher candidates’ TPACK development should be involved in teacher training activities. TPACK expresses a combined knowledge, so complex activities should be consulted to increase this accumulation of knowledge. In this direction, the process of designing instructional materials allows learning by design and can address all of this integrated knowledge. In this study, in math education department of a state university in Turkey, a research was conducted with 19 teacher candidates studying in the third grade. Teacher candidates have been… Continue Reading
