As originally written, the goals did not include a distinct role for higher education nor did they acknowledge the importance of teachers to their success. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A total of 58 preservice teachers enrolled in an elementary childhood program at Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts were surveyed before and after taking a special math, science, and social studies course called Piggybacking. This course emphasizes child-centered and cooperative learning by allowing elementary school students to choose individual preservice teachers to work with on a one-to-one basis for an entire semester. The elementary school students learn math, science, and social studies concepts, and the preservice teachers learn by observing how children think and learn. Before enrolling in the course, the preservice teachers indicated high levels of concern about innovative methods such as child-centered and cooperative learning. A project examined student participation in portfolio assessment and cooperative learning in a “Reading in the Content Areas” class for preservice teachers. Students were a diverse group which included preservice middle school and secondary teachers of English, science, music, and art–as well as preservice elementary teachers seeking to learn methods for teaching math, social studies, science, and art. Of the 30 students, 18 were traditional undergraduate students; 2 were returning students who had been classroom teachers; 5 held baccalaureate degrees but no teacher certification; and the remaining 5 were nontraditional undergraduate students. Students participate in an individualized learning program while aspiring teachers complete their teacher training competencies through knowledge and performance levels at Portal Schools. The children work in open-space instructional areas that utilize diagnosing and prescribing methods, scope and sequence activities, learning centers, learning activity packages, and contracts. The research examined how teachers and teacher educators responded to sweeping changes imposed on schools and education following the Education Reform Act of 1988. Both the United States and England experience significant criticism of teachers and teacher education from elected officials and the press. The British government has increased its control of teacher education over the past 2 decades. There are efforts to move teacher education responsibility from universities to schools. The National Curriculum dictates about 80 percent of the content in primary and secondary schools. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study examined a fifth year teacher, who had participated in an original project assessing the effectiveness of metaphor within collaborative reflection to help prospective teachers define, explain, and challenge their beliefs about learning and teaching science. Results found that using metaphor as a tool for reflection helped the teacher articulate beliefs and put them into practice during student teaching. The study investigated, after 5 years, the extent to which he continued using an inquiry stance, metaphor remained part of his personal reflection, and other changes impacted his learning to teach.
