Eric.ed.gov – Math Word Problem Remediation with Elementary Students.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report describes a program for improving elementary school students ability to solve mathematical word problems. The targeted population consisted of primary, middle, and junior high students attending two different kindergarten through eighth grade schools. Both schools were located within blue collar neighborhoods in a large metropolitan area. Students’ weakness in the area of problem solving was documented by teacher-made tests, journaling, standardized test scores, student surveys, and teacher surveys. Research literature and measurement tools revealed the following probable causes: inability to read story problems adequately; poor reading ability in general; improper strategy use; lack of strategy use; lack of desire to properly understand mathematical logic of problem; strategies that rely on memorization; insufficient instructional time spent on problem solving; and inadequate time spent on finding solutions.… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Reform of Secondary Mathematics Education in High-Performing Rural Schools. Working Paper No. 36

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Rural schools, like others in the nation, are enjoined to use national and state standards as the basis for educational reform. Moreover, national standards for mathematics education were established early (1989) and have been disseminated widely. Nevertheless, little is known about the dynamics of standards-based reform of mathematics in rural schools. This paper reports findings from a set of four case studies of mathematics education in rural secondary schools to provide insights into the dynamics of instructional reform. Analysis of data from interviews, observations, and documents revealed two emergent themes: (1) math teachers address calls for improvement by building on traditional practices and (2) math teachers meld traditional and reform practices. Eric.ed.gov – A Case Study: Teaching Engineering Concepts in Science. Research in Engineering and Technology Education

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study was conducted to describe a teacher developed high school engineering course, to identify teaching strategies used in the process of delivering math and science literacy through this course, to identify challenges and constraints that occurred during its development and delivery, and to describe the strategies that were used to overcome those obstacles. A case study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with the engineering instructor at Benilde-St. Margaret’s in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. In addition, the researcher conducted classroom observations and reviewed instructional materials, teacher lesson plans, and teacher journals. Themes that developed regarding the strategies used to deliver this particular course identified that concepts created its platform for delivery, curricular trial and error was at work, science and engineering competitions were leveraged as a basis… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Sharing Success in the Southeast: Math, Science, and Computer Education.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Sharing Success program, recognizes exemplary public school programs and practices in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Each year, SERVE emphasizes a specific program area for recognition based on one of the national goals for education. This “Sharing Success” publication documents several dozen of the region’s most effective programs in the areas of mathematics, science, and technology (computer-assisted instruction). Programs are ranked for quality and innovation and are presented in three sections: (1) Programs of Excellence, highest rated programs (21) in the areas of Mathematics, Science, Math/Science, and Technology (e.g., science–tropical rain forest, summer science fun lab; math–elementary math lead teachers, problem-solving approach to algebra; math/science–Hayes Cooper Center [magnet school]; technology–writing to write); (2) Quality Programs (46) meeting a high… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Motivating Students in Math Using Cooperative Learning.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In many elementary classrooms, math tends to be individualized work with repetitive paper-and-pencil assignments. This research project attempted to generate more interest in math, reduce math anxiety, and make math more enjoyable for students. Through the use of cooperative learning, students practiced and developed social skills needed to successfully accomplish given tasks and projects. Cooperative learning encourages group interaction with assigned roles, with each member sharing responsibility for the group and the work produced. A second grade class of twenty-five Black and Hispanic students worked in a cooperative learning environment for math. Each group completed reflections on how they worked together as a team and what they could do to improve. Groups took part in evaluating their work both collectively and individually. Results indicated that the use… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Integrating Math and Science with Technology.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report describes the effect of integrating math and science and employing technology to bridge the gap. The targeted population consisted of primary and secondary students in a diverse, blue-collar, rural community located in northeast central Illinois. The problem of low-test scores and errors on assignments in mathematics was evident and documented through daily work, student portfolios, and teacher generated tests. Analysis of probable cause data revealed that low student achievement in math skills was evident in the daily work, portfolios of students, and tests by teachers. Students were not motivated to learn math and science skills in a traditional classroom setting. Teaching strategies utilized technology, thematic units, and an integrated math and science course in order to make learning relevant to the students. A review of… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Bringing Language to Life: Quest’s TheatreBridge Enhances Learning in Class

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In math, students and teachers toss tennis balls. In science, students become rain, hail, sleet, and snow. In language arts, students maneuver their bodies into related positions and hold into a frieze they call “tableau.” The students and teachers are part of TheatreBridge, a four-year model demonstration and dissemination program lead by Quest Visual Theatre, a nonprofit company based in Lanham, Maryland. Activities from TheatreBridge feel like play, but whether the students are in math, science, or language arts, the learning from TheatreBridge is deeply serious. TheatreBridge applies the principles and strategies of visual theatre to classroom instruction. By applying visual theatre modalities and strategies, TheatreBridge supports visually- and kinesthetically-based instruction that is culturally appropriate for deaf and hard of hearing students. It creates a learning environment… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Gender-Fair Math. Equity in Education Series.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Society’s perception of women in the field of mathematics is slowly changing, but strong social messages remain that technology, mathematics, and science are nontraditional arenas for girls, and girls self-select out of these areas. This booklet is directed to both families and educators, because the work of encouraging girls in math begins at birth and continues throughout the school years. The purposes of this booklet are to: (1) provide information about the harmful and lasting effects on girls and boys of gender-role stereotyping; (2) help administrators, teachers, and families as they develop ways to reduce gender-role stereotyping and encourage K-12 girls in math; and (3) offer educators and families the most current strategies that work to encourage both girls and boys in math. Section titles are: “Stereotyping… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Me While I Am Learning Mathematics: Reflections to Elementary School Students’ Drawings

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Each child will not become senior mathematicians in the future but all children have the right to get learning opportunities which he/she can develop his/her mathematical understanding at school. The success of children in mathematics is closely related to how they are taught mathematics. At this point, the role of teaching mathematics stands out in elementary school since they first encounter mathematics as a subject. Elementary school is the place where students first experience success or failure in mathematics. Therefore, the fundamentals of students’ tendencies towards mathematics which will set and affect their future learning life are also laid here. The present study aims to examine the perceptions of elementary school students towards learning mathematics by means of their drawings. Drawings are tools for children to express… Continue Reading
