tandfonline.com – Fluid reasoning, working memory and planning ability in assessment of risk for mathematical difficulties

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The demands on mathematical problem-solving have increased in almost all school systems internationally and may constitute a barrier for children with special educational needs (SEN). This study explored the role of fluid reasoning (FR), working memory (WM) and complex executive function of planning (EF) in children (N = 62) referred for assessment of SEN, and specifically of risk for mathematical difficulties (MD). Performances on FR, WM and complex EF of planning were used to predict risk for MD. Results showed that planning ability predicted children at risk for MD, beyond FR or WM ability, when comparing with children not at risk for MD. It was concluded that assessing the complex EF of planning in addition to FR and WM ability is… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Defining and evaluating stability in early years assessment

ABSTRACT Stability is an important underlying assumption in any form of assessment-supported decision-making. Since early years development is frequently described as unstable, the concept plays a central role in the discussion surrounding early years assessment. This paper describes stability as a set of assumptions about the way individual scores change over time. Here, an analytical framework developed by Tisak and Meredith, which can be used to evaluate these assumptions, is extended and applied to evaluate the stability of mathematics… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Stuck in failure: comparing special education needs assessment policies and practices in Sweden and Germany

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The definition for special education needs (SEN) and the policies for its assessment varies widely between countries. This paper aims to investigate similarities and differences through a Swedish-German comparative approach. Based on the distinction between categorical and relational perspectives as expressions of specific thought styles, 58 SEN assessment reports from both countries were qualitatively analysed. The results demonstrate the maintenance of the categorical perspective in terms of focusing on the pupil’s ‘failure’. This result is even more notable in the German examples than the Swedish cases. Exceptionally and in both countries, a relational perspective emerges, taking teaching and the social environment into account. In conclusion, we suggest a flexible SEN approach with a stronger emphasis on the relation… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The computer-based assessment of domain-specific problem-solving competence—A three-step scoring procedure

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Problem-solving competence is an important requirement in back offices across different industries. Thus, the assessment of problem-solving competence has become an important issue in learning and instruction in vocational and professional contexts. We developed a computer-based low-stakes assessment of problem-solving competence in the domain of controlling. The assessment required participants to process three complex and authentic business-related scenarios within an office simulation. The low number of items and the open-ended response threaten the reliability of the scoring. We collected data from 780 German students in Vocational Education and Training (VET) and applied the following procedure to score the participants’ solutions to the three scenarios: A fine-grained scoring resulted in a comprehensive set of response patterns for each scenario.… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Self-perceived and actual competencies of senior high school students in General Mathematics

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Having produced the first batch of the K to 12 program graduates in the country in 2018, an evaluation of their acquired competence is one of the priorities of the government. This study analyzed the perceived, actual, and reasons behind the competence level in General Mathematics of 410 Grade 12 students. The study employed a General Mathematics Competency test to measure the students’ actual competence, Rapid Competency Assessment Questionnaire to analyze students’ self-perceived learned competence; and, interview schedule for the reasons for having the acquired competence. Results showed that the three areas of General Mathematics that include Functions and their Graphs, Business Mathematics, and Logic were perceived to be satisfactory by the Senior High School students, but the… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Connections of Evidence: Using Best Practices of Assessment in an Ongoing Serials Analysis Project

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Making decisions about continuing or cancelling serials subscriptions is a difficult process under the best of circumstances. In these situations, academic librarians can borrow from assessment practices in terms of gathering data, examining emergent patterns, comparing quantitative research and qualitative feedback, closing the loop by making changes, and then preparing to re-evaluate these changes. This article addresses a case study from an academic library at a state university in the midwestern United States as a model of best assessment practices for determining the future of print and online periodical subscriptions. The result is an updated, refocused serials collection that supports learning and research outcomes. Link til kilde

tandfonline.com – Towards a Comprehensive, Empirical Model of Language Assessment Literacy across Stakeholder Groups: Developing the Language Assessment Literacy Survey

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT While scholars have proposed different models of language assessment literacy (LAL), these models have mostly comprised prescribed sets of components based on principles of good practice. As such, these models remain theoretical in nature, and represent the perspectives of language assessment researchers rather than stakeholders themselves. The project from which the current study is drawn was designed to address this issue through an empirical investigation of the LAL needs of different stakeholder groups. Central to this aim was the development of a rigorous and comprehensive survey which would illuminate the dimensionality of LAL and generate profiles of needs across these dimensions. This paper reports on the development of an instrument designed for this purpose: the Language Assessment Literacy… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Transitioning to engineering practice

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Transition from education to practice can be troublesome for many early-career engineers because expectations, habitual work practices and values tend to conflict with realities of engineering workplaces. Emerging technologies referred to as ‘Industry 4.0’ or the ‘fourth industrial revolution’ have prompted many to argue for students to develop improved socio-technical skills. Understandings of practice emerging from contemporary research could help educators shape a new generation of engineers with more appropriate abilities to restore global productivity growth and transform economies to eliminate greenhouse emissions in a short enough time to limit human-induced global warming. However, so far, explicit curriculum reforms addressing graduate attributes and workplace skills have not resulted in significant employability improvements. This paper argues that assessment practices… Continue Reading
