ABSTRACT Background and Context: Computing education is expanding, while the teaching of algorithms is less well studied. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) for teaching algorithms. Method: We conducted semi-structured interviews with seven computer science (CS) teachers in upper secondary education (students aged 15–18). The data were analyzed qualitatively. Findings: We found two patterns of variation in teachers’ PCK. First, we detected variation in the teachers’ goals related to their view… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: “Children’s Choices,” a project of a joint committee supported by the International Reading Association (IRA) and the Children’s Book Council, is published annually in “The Reading Teacher.” Books recommended by children are grouped by levels: Beginning Reader (ages 5-7); Young Readers (ages 8-10); and Advanced Readers (ages 11-13). Books listed at the Beginning Reader level and Young Reader level of “Children’s Choices” from 1996 through 2006 were analyzed for support of specific curriculum areas. Books related to language arts, math, social studies, and science were categorized and listed according to Louisiana content standards for prekindergarten, kindergarten, first, second, and third grade. The resulting categorized, annotated book list reflects content areas and standards, and each annotation reflects age range as indicated in “Children’s Choices.” Early childhood teachers will… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Thematic units, the basis of organization for this guide, work in many ways toward the dual goals of language and content area instruction. The thematic units presented here address topics of high interest to limited English-proficient (LEP) students, including: robots; using a computer data base; activities with plants; building terrariums; architecture; and cooking. In order to provide LEP students with an active role in the learning process, the units incorporate many opportunities for them to play games, participate in movement activities, enter into role playing, create art works and constructions, cook and manipulate materials. To bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world, the units incorporate field trips and other activities that provide LEP students with motivational experiences to facilitate their learning of the new… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The 2012 Preschool Pilot Study of PBS KIDS Transmedia Mathematics Content (Preschool Pilot) is an important part of the authors’ multiyear “Ready To Learn” (RTL) summative evaluation initiative. Through this initiative funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), it was the responsibility of the Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), and SRI International (SRI) to document and, whenever possible, to measure the impact of transmedia mathematics and literacy resources on learning for children from low-income families across a variety of settings: early childhood classrooms, community settings, and home. In this phase of the evaluation, the authors explored the potential of using technology (interactive whiteboards and laptops) and transmedia resources (digital videos and interactive games)–specifically games developed using the CPB-PBS RTL Mathematics framework,… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This study explores preschool teachers’ considerations regarding their work with curriculum content areas and examines possible relationships with their professional competence and group size. Drawing on Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory and mixed-methods analytical procedure, this study analyzes 698 preschool teachers’ considerations on a set of 12 curriculum content areas. The results revealed reading and writing as the two least emphasized content areas. No significant relationship was found among preschool teachers’ ratings of these content areas, their professional background, and group size. Prominent in preschool teachers’ reasoning for rating reading and writing as least emphasized, is a child-directed approach implying that these content areas are not involved in their professional assignment and therefore included merely as a response to… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT In recent decades, most Nordic countries have seen reforms in their teacher education programme, giving rise to an ongoing debate on these programmes’ content, structure, and quality. As part of a recent reform of teacher education in Norway, new Master’s-level programme have been introduced to educate teachers for grades 5–10, whereby pre-service teachers (PSTs) take specialised content courses and undergo field placements twice a year. The purpose of this paper is to determine the effects of the specialised content courses on student teaching. In this study, we used a survey design to collect quantitative data from PSTs and qualitative data from mentor teachers. PSTs teaching subjects they specialised in had a more positive teaching experience related to perceived… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Student achievement and attitudes toward mathematics are influenced by the teacher, emphasizing the importance of quality teacher preparation. This study explored different preparations and the impact on pre-service teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge. The sample included 96 pre-service teachers enrolled in a math course at one Midwestern university. Results suggest that field experience combined with other aspects of mathematical teacher preparation impact pre-service teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge for mathematics. (Contains 7 tables.)
