Abstract Historically, the introductory course in statistics at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), has taken a traditional, lecture-based form. A previous study at NMBU concluded that the course structure appeared to disfavor certain cognitive or personality types, extraverts in particular. Therefore, in 2016, as an experiment, the course was restructured into a student active learning course following a flipped classroom approach. At the same time, students were encouraged to do an online screening test for cognitive preferences,… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Exploring pupils’ and teachers’ perspectives on face-to-face promotive interaction in cooperative learning

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This study reports on pupils’ and teachers’ perceptions of face-to-face promotive interaction (FtFPI) in cooperative learning (CL) at two primary schools in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). Using mixed methods, the study asks (1) ‘To what extent are the aspects of FtFPI most likely to influence pupils’ CL group work?’ (2) ‘What are the challenges in applying pupils’ FtFPI in small CL groups?’ The findings reveal mostly positive beliefs of FtFPI influence on small CL group work. However, when it comes to pupils’ and teachers’ experiences, several challenges have been identified: (1) organisation of FtFPI, (2) planning and balancing between working on a group task and supporting peers, (3) interpersonal behaviours, and (4) supportive communication. The findings suggest… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The impact of cooperative learning approach on the development of EFL learners’ speaking fluency

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The current study investigated the impact of using two cooperative learning strategies on the development of oral English language fluency among Iranian intermediate EFL learners. First, 72 learners studying at a private English language institute were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and one control group, each of equal size (n = 24). An equivalence of language proficiency between the members of the three groups was confirmed with the results from an Oxford Placement Test. Next, all participants undertook an oral fluency pre-test prior to either an eight-week treatment intervention or control phase. Over the eight-week study duration, the two treatment groups were each engaged in different cooperative learning approaches either Numbered heads or Think-pair-share while the control group was… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Face-to-face promotive interaction leading to successful cooperative learning: A review study

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The article presents a review of 34 studies conducted from 1995 to 2017 focusing on face-to-face promotive interaction (FtFPI) factors that may lead to successful cooperative learning (CL) in small groups, as guided by the following research question: “Which FtFPI factors lead to successful CL in small groups?“ A manual and citation database search were used to find relevant studies. The findings indicate that students’ interpersonal behavior, their experiences and active participation in the CL process, communication and support to each other, and teachers’ influence on promoting students’ interaction leading to successful CL in small groups. Moreover, these factors may lead to students’ deep learning. However, the review suggests that systematic preparations must be made by both teachers… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Fostering equity in a multicultural and multilingual classroom through cooperative learning

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This paper presents a programme designed to deepen knowledge regarding diversity and to sustain equality and equity in participation during class activities in high sociolinguistic diversity classrooms. We investigated a four-stage programme integrating all students’ heritage languages in cooperative school activities in one 4th grade class in the French-speaking canton of Geneva in Switzerland. Activities that the teacher engaged in included: a) activities devoted to openness to others, b) activities devoted to linguistic diversity, c) activities devoted to cultural diversity, d) cooperative activities, relying on heritage languages and personal family stories. The three first stages aimed to help students feel accepted and comfortable when participating in multilingual cooperative activities. Feedback from the teacher, students and parents indicated that… Continue Reading
