Eric.ed.gov – The Impact of Use of Manipulatives on the Math Scores of Grade 2 Students

This paper discusses the possibility of using mathematical manipulatives to improve student test scores and students’ attitudes towards mathematics. Forty-three Grade 2 students with age ranges between six and eight from a rural town in Saskatchewan were selected. They were divided randomly into two groups: the treatment group (n = 22) and the control group (n = 21) and their pre- and post-test scores compared. Findings supported the hypothesis that students in the treatment group who received the math intervention obtained higher post-test scores in comparison to their classmates in the control group. Eric.ed.gov – Where Is the Math in Science Olympiad? Aligning Mathematics Standards to Science Olympiad Events

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Science Olympiad (SO) is a national non-profit organization which holds science competitions for students in grades 7-12 within 50 states with each event aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS, 2010). The purpose of this article is not only to align the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSSM) with Science Olympiad events, but also to determine Webb’s Depth of Knowledge Levels (DOK) within the mathematics content. This alignment was achieved by utilizing a content analysis and the Depth of Knowledge alignment processes (Webb, 1999). The findings in this study indicate there are a significant number of SO events that are aligned to the CCSSM with high levels of Depth of Knowledge within the Division B (grades 6-8) and C (grades 9-12) events. In 2016-2017, the United States had nearly 1,000 public 2-year postsecondary institutions (community colleges), serving almost nine million students, representing 39% of all undergraduates. The majority of entering community college students require developmental (or remedial) math. Success rates in the developmental math course sequence and college more broadly are discouragingly low. Policymakers, practitioners, and researchers alike are eagerly searching for reforms to improve success rates, but there is a dearth of causal evidence on the effectiveness of most proposed reforms. Eric.ed.gov – Empowering Teachers with Low-Intensity Strategies to Support Instruction: Within-Activity Choices in Third-Grade Math with Null Effects

In this study, we investigated the effects of within-activity choices offered during math by third-grade teachers to participating students with behavioral and academic needs. We utilized a professional development model to train teachers to implement instructional choice in the classroom while collecting direct observation data on student’s academic engagement. Teachers were able to implement practices with high levels of integrity and collect momentary time sampling data on one student with high levels of reliability. This article reports on a study of pre-service teachers’ teaching performance being simultaneously evaluated by themselves and their professor. Thirty-two pre-service teachers created and planned mathematics lessons approved by their professor to be taught in elementary classrooms. The teaching experience of those teachers was videotaped and evaluated by the professor using the Field Assessment Observation Form in the areas of content knowledge, instruction, assessment, classroom management, and affective skills. Eric.ed.gov – Teaching Math to Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) Children Using Mobile Games: Outcomes with Student and Teacher Perspectives

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Leveraging the use of mobile devices for education, such as instructional games, is an area of increasing interest for targeted subpopulations of students including those who are deaf/hard-of-hearing (DHH). This paper outlines the perspectives of Deaf Education teachers and DHH children who participated in the GeePerS*Math project. Interviews and surveys provide data from the primary implementation of the technology in an ecologically valid setting. Findings included similar results from both teachers and students with regard to attitudes and transfer of skills within the game to those in traditional curriculum. Unintended outcomes, such as gaining orienteering skills and peer-tutoring, were also noted. Two under studied areas essential to success in mathematics are fractions and algebra. The purpose of this study was to test the effects of a multi-component intervention on the math performance for middle school students with EBD in an alternative educational setting. This study used a one-group nonequivalent dependent variables design (Shadish, Cook, & Campbell, 2002) with multiple measures in multiple waves to assess the effects. This model provides teachers opportunities to develop their problem solving skills as well as help them to communicate with others on classroom implementation of problem-solving activities. In this report we provide our implementation of a zone theory lens provided by Goos as a way to investigate the MTC model.
