It consists of this packet of workshop activities with detailed instructions on how to use them in a combined mathematics-science workshop and a related set of problems (with solutions) that focus on the mathematical topics most commonly used in science classes. The packet includes: (1) background information on the workshops; (2) description of materials provided; (3) workshop responses; (4) a description of four types of workshops; (5) directions for and strategies used in leading the different types of workshops; (6) things to look for during workshop discussions; and (7) viewgraph (overhead transparency) masters. Eric.ed.gov – South Central Kansas Elementary Math-Science Project – SOCKEMS 71.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This publication describes features of the South Central Kansas Elementary Math-Science (SOCKEMS) project developed as a child-centered program, although the actual teaching materials and methods are not described. Materials are presented in such a way that children learn science by using their perceptual ability to great extent. Considerable emphasis is placed on concrete, tangible, observable investigative activities. Inservice teacher workshops to orient teachers with the methods and materials are provided. Evaluation of the program showed considerable student success related to short term and long term achievement and attitudinal changes. This work was prepared under an ESEA Title III contract. Eric.ed.gov – Innovations in Math/Science Teacher Education: A New Population; A Revised Training Agenda.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A special program was initiated in 1985 at George Washington University to encourage persons from other careers to pursue a second career in teaching in the Washington D.C. area. This report describes the variables that had to be and are continuing to be considered in the design of this training effort for mid-career professionals. Factors considered include: (1) difference in the culture of the school and the environment of the first career; (2) developmental process of learning; (3) the educated consumer and teacher education; (4) the attributes and experiences of the career population; (5) match between the mid-career professional and the level and age of the student population; (6) certification is critical, the degree is not; and (7) part-time student/full-time professional. Eric.ed.gov – [Training Second Career Teachers in Math/Science Education.] Final Report.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The National Executive Service Corps, an organization which uses the skills and experiences of senior professionals, responded to the perceived shortage of qualified mathematics and science teachers in New York City. This paper describes a project designed to tap the skills and talents of retired scientists, engineers, and mathematicians who wished to enter teaching as a second career. The program consisted of five major parts: recruitment, orientation, training, placement, and support. These activities are described in the main body of this report. A project summary points out that second career teachers bring something current, real, and relevant to lessons.
