eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This keynote address focuses on equity in science and mathematics education. The science and math achievement of minority and poor children are discussed from an instructional policy perspective with emphasis on who gets access to what knowledge. The discussion about the politics of knowledge acquisition involves a discussion of race, class, and gender and highlights the fact that even though there have been substantial gains, the fact remains that a student’s status as minority or poor or female severely impairs that student’s likelihood of acquiring a quality educational experience, particularly with regard to science and math. An analysis of data reveals that with respect to curriculum there are no substandard schools; however, there are significant differences in teacher qualifications and teacher attitudes. Compared to students not in… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract This paper is the culmination of efforts by a group of participants at the 32nd Annual American Real Estate Society Conference in Denver who met to discuss the future of real estate education, and its authors represent the diversity and breadth reflective of the field itself. Previous literature, spanning more than 50 years, has consistently maintained that the issues related to the study of real estate are too complex to easily resolve, resulting in a lack of consensus regarding an accepted body of knowledge. This paper is unique in that it not only identifies issues and challenges inherent in today’s academic climate, it also provides for a collection of options, both applied and aspirational, that build on existing… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT European Union policies emphasise the importance of entrepreneurship and self-employment to maintain economic growth, a solution influenced by the USA and research from schools of business. There are expectations of higher education graduates that they are innovative, will start businesses and will employ others. However, transferring a solution from one country to another may not be as simple as that. This study questions the recommendations made in EU policies which mainly focus on how to support individuals to become self-employed. Extensive data from the Swedish population registry of approximately 90,000 tertiary-educated people, all born in the mid-1970s, is used to analyse the extent to which this group became self-employed. Results show that societal and cultural differences need to… Continue Reading →

This paper argues that rather than being a process that can be objectively planned or predicted, regional engagement on the part of universities is a learning activity featuring characteristics of a subjective deliberation process. This subjective deliberation process is simultaneously influenced by factors operating at the intra-organizational and regional level, as well as the field in which the university is located. A model that takes this multilevel environment into account is applied to a single case study region: Kaiserslautern (Germany). A Q-methodological approach is employed to reveal and analyze the aforementioned subjective perspectives regarding drivers of universities’ regional engagement. Two key viewpoints emerge from this analysis: one perspective reflects a highly institutionalized reading of regional engagement, and can… Continue Reading →

In 2015, using social media, a new generation of South African university students launched the social justice movement #FeesMustFall. The call for social justice, equity and equality has been a burning issue in South Africa’s education system since the dark days of apartheid. In 1976, non-white students revolted against the apartheid government and many lost their lives during the protest. On 15 October 2015, 40 years later, students from all demographics mobilised to launch a protest under the theme #FeesMustFall against institutional racism which did not die with apartheid. The roots of this movement are symptomatic of deep social and economic concerns rooted in the apartheid history of South Africa. Through the use of social media, students mobilised protest… Continue Reading →

The influence of scientific research in art is not exclusively a contemporary phenomenon. The Alberti model of pictorial representation based on perspective, as well as the social consideration of art, included Painting among the liberal arts because of the mathematical principles of geometry which it was founded on. For more than 400 years, perspective would be called the “science of art” and it established, almost in a unitary way, a representative model that has characterised the artistic production and the training of artists until the fracture represented by the art of the twentieth century. The discussion about the preeminence of the rational model in the artistic practice based on the aesthetic or historicist parameters has been the topic… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are an explicit document that articulates our pedagogical practices in K-12 science instruction for the United States. The document is an excellent work that describes pedagogy and road maps for building coherence of science principles and student understanding of the Nature of Science. The prescient thing about the current NGSS is that physics teachers have practiced the ideas and tenets prescribed in the NGSS decades ago. Also, the ideas espoused in the NGSS Framework can easily be transferred to other disciplines, especially Math, through specific, articulated lesson building.

The aim of this study is to investigate relationships between note-taking and the orchestrating of math-talk in whole-class teaching. A lesson on (average) velocity in a Swedish Grade 6 has been observed. Taking an inferentialist stance on human understanding, the study conceptualizes teaching and learning from the perspective of how students come to be engaged in the language practice of giving and asking for reasons. The study shows how note-taking supports a teacher-student relationship where the teacher produces content and the students’ participation is reduced to consume content. It shows how note-taking can support descriptive math-talk of concepts and symbols and step-by-step procedural math-talk, connected to the goal of providing students examples of tasks, similar to the tasks… Continue Reading →

In this study, Activity Theory (AT) is used to analyse general patterns for how cultural and historical factors interact with the shaping of science activities in preschools. Data was produced from field notes, video observations, video stimulated recall group discussions and individual interviews with preschool teachers at fourteen preschool units, where science activities were described as a common feature of the practice. Two factors were found to be particularly important for how and whether science learning opportunities were afforded the children: the structure of the preschool community and the type of educational culture within it. In communities characterised by weak mutual commitment and without joint understanding of the purpose of the activities, the science learning objects of the… Continue Reading →
