eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Presented are the following reports: (1) Math Anxiety: Real and Complex; (2) Math Anxiety and Middle School Students; (3) Math Anxiety and College Freshmen; (4) Math Anxiety and Elementary Teachers; and (5) Math Anxiety: Conclusions, Discussions, and Remedies. The studies attempt to answer questions regarding mathematics anxiety: (1) what is it, (2) who has it, (3) why do people have it, and (4) what can be done to prevent or cure this anxiety? Anxiety was measured by a standardized rating scale and information on related variables was determined by a standardized test and an investigator-developed questionnaire. Findings are presented separately for each study. Among the conclusions are: (1) group membership has little impact on a person’s anxiety unless the group membership reflects actual mathematics performance or an… Continue Reading
eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this technical report is to summarize the research methodology of the Novice Teacher Study (NTS) strand of the Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) research. The Ohio TQP has embarked on a series of research studies to learn more about the characteristics of effective teachers and to identify the patterns of teacher performance in both novice and experienced teachers that commingle to enhance student achievement at different grade levels, in different subjects, and with different types of students. The report is divided into three sections: a brief description of TQP methodology and data sources; a detailed discussion of findings, and conclusions and directions for future research. In preparing this technical report, we drew from artifacts documenting the research processes; from regional and national presentations; and from… Continue Reading
tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Practice-oriented educational research is increasingly gaining traction in educational research due to its intention to contribute to both educational research and educational practice. Educational researchers have established quality concerns that practice-oriented educational research should meet in order to realise this intention. We argue that teachers’ quality concerns probably differ from researchers’ concerns. This may explain why practice-oriented educational research faces challenges concerning its contribution to educational practice. The aim of this study is to identify teacher-researchers’ perspectives on the quality of practice-oriented educational research and to analyse how these differ from the research perspective. In a qualitative empirical study, individual reflections, small-group discussions and semi-structured interviews of ten purposefully selected teacher-researchers are analysed following a so-called informed grounded… Continue Reading
eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper describes two researchers engagement with two teachers as they taught a middle grades mathematics course, Current Events Math, in a large urban school district. The researchers share bits of data and their ethical entanglements as they entered into the site to find the truth about what works in middle grades mathematics classrooms only to realize that truth cannot be found through research. They then grappled with the question of the purpose of research and their roles as researchers in the school and the academy. [For the complete proceedings, see ED583608.] Link til kilde
eric.ed.gov har udgivet: HIPPY targeted parents of children zoned to 100 Houston Independent School District (HISD) elementary campuses during the 2018-2019 academic year, which reflected an increase from 80 campuses the previous year. Academic performance of students whose parents participated in HIPPY was assessed using the kindergarten 2018 Logramos and Iowa assessments, the prekindergarten CIRCLE assessment, and the combined English and Spanish STAAR 3-8. HIPPY kindergarten students attained higher mean normal curve equivalent (NCE) scores on the Logramos reading and mathematics subtests compared to the district, and comparable Iowa mathematics subtest scores as the district. CIRCLE results revealed that the majority of HIPPY students met benchmark by EOY on English and Spanish mathematics subtests. However, by EOY, students’ performance fell below the district on most CIRCLE English math subtests. Students… Continue Reading
eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This action research study investigated the impact of teaching physics using a disciplinary literacy framework for instruction across all units in one academic year. Through a suite of vocabulary strategies and lessons that encourage students to write, speak, draw, mathematically translate, and design experiments, students learn to do physics by approximating problems and tasks like physicists. The data from this study suggests that students who exhibit these physicist-like disciplinary literacy behaviors may perform better on math-based assessments so long as they employ disciplinary literacy strategies while problem solving. By teaching via a disciplinary literacy framework, the classroom may become more student-driven where disciplinary literacy behaviors are observable which may result in higher scores on teacher evaluation instruments that favor student-driven instruction. While students that exhibit disciplinary literacy… Continue Reading
eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Recent studies in math education focus on differences between behaviors and performances of male and female students. In this study, achievement and attitudes of middle school students to math were described in terms of gender and grade differences. The aim of this study is to determine whether any differences exist between female and male students’ attitudes and successes of middle school toward mathematics. This research was designed as a descriptive research. Students (6th, 7th, and 8th grades) were registered to “Attitude Survey toward Mathematics.” This survey is consisted of two parts. In the first part, there are demographic questions. The second part is 5-Likert type survey which is intended to learn students’ attitudes toward mathematics. Secondly, in order to determine students’ achievements from mathematics, their grades and… Continue Reading
tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This article gives the demographic characteristics of the U.S. homeschooling population and the reasons that parents choose to homeschool, summarizes the findings of studies on the homeschool learner outcomes of academic achievement, social development, and success in adulthood, and proposes future research on parent-led home-based education. The majority of peer-reviewed studies on academic achievement reveal a positive effect for the homeschooled students compared to institutional schooled students, while a few studies show mixed or negative results. Regarding social and emotional development, a large majority of studies show clearly positive outcomes for the homeschooled compared to those in conventional schools. A majority of the studies on the relative success of the home-educated who later became adults show positive outcomes… Continue Reading
