eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science Education (ENC) helps teachers by offering a broad assortment of services to enable them to quickly locate educational resources. This document is designed to give educators information about curriculum resources available for teaching math and science in K-12 classrooms. Each issue of ENC Focus presents a selection from the Clearinghouse collection focused on a topic of particular interest to math and science teachers. In addition to meeting general requirements for inclusion in the ENC collection, curriculum materials listed in the Focus series are appropriate to the specific topic of the issue; support hands-on, active, inquiry-based methods of instruction; and are readily available. This issue offers a sampling of useful materials and other resources on family involvement in mathematics and… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This brief summarizes the findings of a recent book, “Standards Deviation: How Schools Misunderstand Education Policy” (Spillane, 2004), that examines state and local government relations as the standards move from the statehouse to the district policymakers and teachers who attempt to make sense of them. It takes a case study approach, focusing on a single state, Michigan, and strategically sampled school districts. The study is based on empirical data from a four-year examination of approaches to the use of standards in nine Michigan districts between 1992 and 1996. This overview of the study’s findings first frames the subject of standards-based reform, and then moves to a discussion of the Michigan math and science standards. Variation in the progress of standards among districts is explored next, followed by… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: With today’s computer and telecommunications technologies, every young person can have a quality education regardless of his or her place of birth. This is the dream that Open Educational Resources (OERs), when viewed as a right rather than a privilege, are directed to realize. For developing countries, we propose a type of OER initiative that leverages not only technology but also the skills of the in-class teacher, that utilizes not only the Internet but also lower-tech delivery platforms, and that is created not only by developed countries of the West but also by educators in many countries worldwide. We outline the design of a cross-border, collaborative learning and teaching system called the Blended Learning Open Source Science or Math Studies Initiative (BLOSSOMS), with an associated partnership network… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This document presents first-hand experiences of teachers and students using the Internet in K-12 math and science, as well as articles on getting the right hardware, choosing an Internet service provider, designing an online project, and fostering acceptable use. Chapters include: (1) “Something in the Air” (Linda Maston): a computer-assisted environmental investigation; (2) “Penumbra” (Greg Lockett): a cooperative astronomy project that led to one young woman finding friendship and a new mode of self-expression; (3) “Tall Shadows” (Karen Nishimoto): study of the Earth’s circumference using the Internet; (4) “Pedagogically Speaking” (Bill Barnes): an online class for fourth through eighth grade math teachers examining the best kinds of cooperative activites; (5) “Hoop Happenings” (Caroline Brennan and Joanna Yantosh): math problem solving via e-mail between elementary and middle school… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This guide was written to aid home economics teachers in developing a greater understanding and use of basic skills in the home economics curriculum. The objectives of this guide are (1) to expand the awareness of underlying mathematics and science principles in the consumer and vocational home economics curriculum and (2) to provide a bank of resources to give teachers a practical and useful base from which to launch their own basic skills instruction. The curriculum guide, structured around the Montana Scope and Sequence, is divided into the curriculum areas of child development, family life, clothing and textiles, foods and nutrition, consumer education, and housing and home furnishings. Objectives and page numbers corresponding to the Scope and Sequence are noted on the top of each page. Science… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Mathematics methods coursework can be an innovative environment through which to emphasize the integration of real-world data structures and opportunities. These opportunities can create instructionally informative opportunities for learners, as well as inform teacher candidates of innovative teaching tools at their fingertips. NASA offers numerous curricular opportunities to the mathematical methods coursework, with work focusing on both PreK-12 learners as well as university learners. Such a wide array of interest levels integrate numerous learning objectives, depending upon the needs and desires of the instructors and learners whom they serve. This paper focuses on the innovative opportunities that the NASA educational entity offers to the PreK-12 as well as university mathematical methods courses. Examples are presented in links to several Web sites, which are developed by and in… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study explores the effects of school-level characteristics on North Carolina students’ reading and math achievement from fourth through eighth grade, focusing on the relationships between achievement and the racial and poverty composition of schools. After creating race-by-poverty cohorts of schools, I use multilevel models to examine math and reading achievement for the same students in fourth, sixth, and eighth grades. The racial and poverty composition of schools affect student achievement after factoring in student, family, and other school influences. In addition, increasing teacher quality and school resources reduces but does not eliminate the effects of school racial and poverty composition on student achievement. Policies leading to reductions in racial and poverty isolation in schools and increases in teacher quality should be pursued to guarantee equality of… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper overviews strategies employed by the Appalachian Rural Systemic Initiative (ARSI) to implement systemic reform in math, science, and technology education in rural Appalachia. ARSI is one of four Rural Systemic Initiative projects funded by the National Science Foundation to target regions characterized by low population density and high levels of poverty. The initiative targeted 66 counties encompassing 89 school districts in Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The ARSI project is based on two fundamental strategies: school and community-based action and technology as a tool for access. Specifically, the initiative involved the creation of six regional resource collaboratives made up of key organizations such as universities and community colleges, business and industry, federal and state agencies, teacher enhancement projects, exemplary schools, and… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The field of early childhood holds promising keys to unlocking many of the mysteries in learning. Educators in the field, given the right tools, have the potential to have a profound impact on the long-term success of their students. The design of this curriculum comes directly out of the incredible possibilities set in motion while exploring this field. Early childhood programs have three essential components or learners. Primary learners are the child, the parent(s) and the teacher. In order to best serve the child, early childhood programs must not only focus on the curriculum and programmatic issues, but must also spend time training staff and providing learning opportunities for parents. Successful early childhood programs aim to employ the most effective resources available to meet the needs of… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Reading is one of the disciplines that can be meaningful in integrating mathematics and science. One way to consider the connection between children’s literature and mathematics is to consider how fictional literature might influence a child’s thinking about the issues that are involved in the scientific enterprises. This document presents resources related to that issue in three sections. The first section answers the question of how to find information on children’s literature and lists some resources. The second section presents and explains teacher resource materials for using children’s literature in mathematics and science separately. Finally, the third section lists and summarizes children’s literature books for mathematics and science. (ASK) Link til kilde
