Math anxiety is defined as negative emotions that interfere with the solving of mathematical problems. Studies have found that some students who perform poorly on math assessments actually have a full understanding of the concepts being tested; however, their anxiety interferes with their ability to solve mathematical problems. Researchers believe that implementation of strategies to prevent or reduce math anxiety will improve the math achievement of many students. Eric.ed.gov – Perceptions of Preservice Teachers about Adaptive Learning Programs in K-8 Mathematics Education

These programs provide instruction to students at the appropriate level of difficulty by presenting content, providing feedback, and allowing students to master skills before progressing. The purpose of the study was to seek to interpret how preservice teachers’ experiences influence their perceptions and plans to integrate adaptive learning programs in their future K-8 mathematics classroom. This was a qualitative study with 17 participants who were enrolled in an undergraduate teacher education program. Data was collected and analyzed from archived journals the participants completed as a part of their K-8 Math Methods course, a survey, and semi-structured interviews. The researchers reviewed the required Teacher Work Sample (TWS) capstone projects of student teachers. The TWS is an assessment instrument designed to guide student teachers in designing, implementing, reviewing, and adjusting instruction. Student teachers document in the TWS narratives their use of technology, and this use was compared to the “2008 U.S. Department of Education (USDE): Measures of Teacher and Student Technology Use.” Data gathered in the study revealed both strengths and weaknesses regarding the student teachers’ use of technology to enhance their teaching goals. The study employed Quasi-experimental research design (Pre-test Post-test two group designs). A total of ninety-eight (98) students were selected for the study from two different Senior High Schools (SHS) in Accra, Ghana. The two schools were categorized as control group of forty-eight (48) students and experimental group of fifty (50) students. The analysis of data was done using independent t-test with alpha value (a) = 0.05. Pre-test assessment conducted at the beginning of the study shown no significant difference, t (95.720) = -0.441, p = 0.660 between the control and experimental groups. The flipped classroom is gaining in popularity as an approach that can be used to address these challenges. This paper provides a framework that can be used to interpret the affordances of a flipped classroom within the context of teaching secondary mathematics and the motivational factors that influence the uptake of the approach. An online survey of teachers of students with VI (TVIs) guided the decision to provide the math content in the form of an iPad app, accompanied by print and braille materials. The app includes audio descriptions of images that illustrate the math problems, an integrated Scratch Pad, options to adjust color and contrast, hints, and videos showing how to solve sample problems.
