The main design of the study is qualitative. It arose unexpectedly as the author was messing around on the internet, not thinking about maths at all. She did not encounter the problem in a maths lesson, nor as homework in the middle of a unit on a particular topic, and so she had no clues about what method was going to be useful, or even if she would be able to solve it. The modules also introduce students to real world math concepts and problems that property and casualty actuaries come across in their work. They are designed to be used by teachers and students of AP courses (primarily AB and BC Calculus) after the AP exam, but of course they can be used at any time. Statistical thinking is critical in today’s society. Eric.ed.gov – Getting Everyone Involved in Family Math

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Teachers from the departments of Mathematics and Computer Science, and Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater collaboratively developed and implemented an evening math event, “Family Math Fun Night,” at local elementary schools. As an assignment, preservice elementary teachers developed hands-on mathematical activities, adaptable for different ages and abilities, to engage children and parents. The pre-service elementary teachers presented a variety of activities at each school site to small groups of families and school personnel. In the lesson, the students were learning about Directed Numbers, something they often struggle with and a topic where the teacher finds it hard to explain using real life situations when using addition and subtraction. The teacher began the lesson by outlining what students were expected to achieve. The introduction also included revisiting previous work on how to convert an individual’s number of walking paces to kilometres, as well as directions for the activity that was to follow.
