eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Twenty-one magnet programs in the Houston Independent School District in Texas feature an enriched curriculum in science, math, and/or computers (science/math). Of these, 12 are elementary programs, 4 are middle school programs, and 5 are high school programs. In these programs, a total of 9,574 students were served during the 1990-91 school year: 6,372 elementary, 3,358 middle, and 1,834 high school students. Fifth grade students enrolled in the seven elementary Science/Math Add-On Programs did not score significantly higher than the comparison groups on the MAT6 science tests, and in only one program did students score significantly higher than their matched comparison group on the MAT6 math tests for the 1988-89 or 1990-91 school years. Teachers and volunteers coach students beginning each fall and continuing throughout the year. Participating schools can select individuals or four-person teams to compete in on-site competitions. Students compete in local meets in February, winners progress to state contests in March, and the top four scorers and top coach at the state competition represent their state at the national finals in May. MendelWeb is constructed from Gregor Menders 1865 paper, “Experiments in Plant Hybridization”. An English translation of Mendel’s paper, which is considered to mark the birth of classical and evolutionary genetics, is presented as an active document, with links to traditional reference material (e.g. glossaries, biographies, and the original German text) as well as images, tutorials, active commentaries, related Web sites, and animations. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study used a multiple-baseline-across-subjects design to assess the effectiveness of a peer tutoring intervention for fluency in basic math facts. Specifically, this study assessed the rate of recall of multiplication facts throughout the intervention period and determined whether the progress was matched by improvement in actual classwork. In addition, maintenance of gains in fluency and classwork were assessed. The students targeted were fourth- and fifth-graders (n=8) selected from a combined classroom in an Appalachian elementary school. Children with mild disabilities were included in this classroom. Teacher recommendations along with a multiplication facts probe were used to select tutors and tutees. Baseline data were collected from tutees before intervention occurred. Many research results suggest that students should learn mathematics by experience. Students’ misconceptions may be formed because of the sudden shift from arithmetic to algebra. Up to the eighth grade, mathematical content has been heavily repeated. For more of the active doing of mathematics, four common activities (abstracting, inventing, proving, and applying) and four processes (generalizing, conjecturing, convincing, and specializing) are recommended.
