Eric.ed.gov – Effective Educational Programs: Meta-Findings from the Best Evidence Encyclopedia

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: One of the major series of reviews in elementary and secondary education is the Best Evidence Encyclopedia, or the BEE. Up to now, findings for systematic reviews have largely been restricted to the reviews themselves, with few cases in which lessons learned across many reviews using similar methods can be synthesized. The completion of the Best Evidence Encyclopedia reading and math reviews permits a first opportunity to describe both substantive and methodological patterns across a broad set of studies involving all elementary and secondary grades, reviewed using a common set of review procedures. The purpose of the proposed paper is to synthesize both substantive and methodological findings across the five main Best Evidence Encyclopedia reviews of reading and math programs in grades K-12. The paper considers the… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Teaching and Learning Conditions Are Critical to the Success of Students and the Retention of Teachers. Final Report on the 2006 Teaching and Learning Conditions Survey to the Clark County School District and Clark County Education Association

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Emerging research from across the nation demonstrates that school working conditions–time, teacher empowerment, school leadership, professional development, and facilities and resources–are critical to increasing student achievement and retaining teachers. The existing national data regarding working conditions impact on student achievement and teacher turnover provided a meaningful impetus for the Clark County School District of Nevada (CCSD) and its schools to conduct a survey to gather data with which to inform local working condition reform strategies. By placing the perceptions of Clark County educators at the center of school and district efforts to better recruit and retain teachers, the goal is to create a stable teaching force that allows for a high quality teacher in every classroom across the district. Analysis of the approximately 8,500 survey responses (representing… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Using Writing in Mathematics to Deepen Student Learning

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Writing is the ability to compose text effectively for different purposes and audiences. When many of us reflect on our own school experiences, we recall writing in English and history classes, but not in mathematics. Math classes previously relied on skill-building and conceptual understanding activities. Today, teachers are realizing that writing during a math lesson is more than just a way to document information; it is a way to deepen student learning and a tool for helping students gain new perspectives. They realize, too, that students whose strengths are language-based–and many are–use writing as the key to understanding other disciplines, especially mathematics. Like most things, learning to write well requires instruction and practice. In this booklet, the author aims to nudge secondary math teachers who are thinking… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Evaluation Report III: The Robert Noyce Scholarship Program at CSUB

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) received funding from National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program to recruit Noyce Scholars from upper-division science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors, graduate students, and professionals switched to STEM teaching from other fields (NSF DUE-0934944). The program purpose is to increase the number of highly qualified science and math teachers at high-needs schools. This report is based on multilevel quantitative and qualitative data from university records, program minutes, as well as individual-level information gatherings from Noyce Scholars and Advisors. In addition, the report design is grounded on a thorough review of updated literature to ensure its conformation to best professional practices. The results show that the program quality is supported involvement of a group of award-winning faculty in STEM… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Colorado Commission on Higher Education: Report to the General Assembly. January 2008

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report describes the condition of teacher education preparation at authorized colleges and universities in Colorado, including the total program enrollments, enrollments by licensure or endorsement area, and student demographic and institutional-level data. All approved teacher preparation programs at institutions of higher education, public and private, are compliant with the state’s performance based teacher education measures. The total number of undergraduate teacher education candidates grew twelve percent between 2006 and 2007. The number of traditional-aged students enrolled in teacher education programs grew by forty-seven percent. Students who are members of ethnic minority groups represented small numbers of enrollees in teacher preparation programs. There was a slight decrease in the representation of minority students in teacher education programs from 2006 to 2007: the decrease in Hispanic teacher education… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Teacher Quality Partnership Novice Teacher Studies Technical Report NTS 10-01 Research Brief 2007-2009

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this technical report is to summarize the research methodology of the Novice Teacher Study (NTS) strand of the Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) research. The Ohio TQP has embarked on a series of research studies to learn more about the characteristics of effective teachers and to identify the patterns of teacher performance in both novice and experienced teachers that commingle to enhance student achievement at different grade levels, in different subjects, and with different types of students. The report is divided into three sections: a brief description of TQP methodology and data sources; a detailed discussion of findings, and conclusions and directions for future research. In preparing this technical report, we drew from artifacts documenting the research processes; from regional and national presentations; and from… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Alignment of easyCBM[R] Math Measures to Curriculum Standards. Technical Report #1002

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this study was to examine the alignment of the easyCBM[R] mathematics benchmark and progress monitoring measures to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics “Curriculum Focal Points” (NCTM, 2006). Based on Webb’s alignment model (1997, 2002), we collected expert judgments on individual math items across a sampling of forms for grades K, 1, and 3-8. We found generally strong alignment across grade levels, focal points, and test forms between the easyCBM[R] mathematics items and the content standards. Example of Rater Materials is appended.
