eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This teacher’s guide was designed to accompany five student workbooks: Math Language, Understanding Word Problems, Using a Calculator, Estimation, and Solving Word Problems. The series was specifically developed for low achieving students. The teaching gradually progresses in difficulty, but concepts are presented in small chunks that students can successfully handle. Questions within the text repeatedly involve the students’ attention, and their learning is checked and reviewed within each lesson. Word problem situations reflect mathematical problems that students would actually do. Following suggestions for how to present and use the workbooks, the guide contains over 200 blackline master worksheets. A description at the bottom of each page states the concept being developed, and the corresponding unit and page in the student’s workbook. Separate introductions are provided for each… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This guide is designed to provide teachers with materials they can use with young women to help them to achieve in mathematics and to encourage them to take as many math courses as possible in high school. During their early school years, students develop skills and attitudes toward learning that form the basis of future academic growth. This guide for elementary school teachers includes strategies, activities and resources that deal with five major topics. Part 1, “Attitudes and Math,” includes materials on mathematics confidence, math aspirations and expectations, and attribution patterns. Part 2, “Math Relevance,” contains materials related to interest in mathematics, making mathematics more relevant and useful, and positive role models for girls. Part 3, “The Learning Environment,” contains materials on teacher-student interaction patterns, cooperative learning,… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This general mathematics guide, for use in grades 9-12, is one of a series of guides, K-12, that were developed by teachers to help introduce environmental education into the total curriculum. Since the nature of mathematics is abstract, students do not learn mathematics from ecology, nor ecology from mathematics. But, by observation and manipulation of environmental data, the student may inductively discover a principle in mathematics which can be reached deductively. The purpose of this booklet is to make an attempt to bridge mathematics and ecology. The guide is a supplementary handbook of ecologically-oriented mathematics exercises, designed to be self-contained and complete with answers. The exercises are built around 12 major environmental concepts that form a framework for each grade or subject area, as well as for… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this document are a final report and guide from a project to produce a 30-minute training videotape that provided volunteer tutors and paid adult educators with concrete methods, techniques, and activities to help adult learners improve their numeracy skills. According to the final report, representatives of various adult education programs/advocacy groups who had expertise or interest in math were invited to comprise the design team to collaborate on content. The design team also developed the video’s viewer’s guide, “Math Anxiety, a Video Guide for Adult Literacy Tutors.” A scriptwriter, production company, and post-production editing facility were retained to execute the actual production of the video. Appended to the report are correspondence, needs assessment, math video script, and the video evaluation form. The introduction to the video… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This instructor’s guide contains materials for a 40-hour course designed to refresh math skills for current computer numerical control machine operators. The course uses two instructional methods: computer-based multimedia and traditional instruction. The course description lists target audience and general objective. The next section gives instructors basic information related to providing successful educational programs in a workplace setting, an instructor’s lexicon of strategies and principles that can be used in teaching, instructor’s role and responsibilities, and course objectives. An explanation of lesson format describes these components of each lesson plan: unit name; lesson name; description and specific goals; objectives; prerequisite skills; technology use; materials needed; teacher to teacher; pretest; posttest; purpose/rationale; procedures/activities; evaluation and extension activities; resources; and homework. A section on planning and scheduling deals with… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: MATHCO is a motivating series of audiovisual and print materials designed to overcome the negative effects of sex bias and stereotyping on the attitudes, interests, and aspirations of girls toward mathematics and mathematics-related careers. The materials teach mathematics skills, demonstrate relationships between mathematics and other subjects, and provide exposure to mathematics-related careers. They are useful for boys as well as girls at the pre- and early-adolescent stage; they are both multiethnic and nonsexist in text and illustrations. Module 5 considers the relationship between science and mathematics. The ability to make careful observations is stressed. Following the audiovisual script, 14 activities involving classification, levers, noise, archaeological digs, air pollution, and litter, among other topics, are considered, with activity worksheets for each. Following a summary of materials, program objectives, how to use MATHCO, and a sample time line, background information on sexism in schools, sex stereotyping in mathematics textbooks, teacher behaviors, and other factors affecting the mathematics attainment of females is given. Mathematics anxiety and avoidance is discussed, as are sex-related differences… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A project to develop special training materials to introduce college teachers to the math-language approach is reported. The materials link language learning techniques to mathematics concept formation and are intended for teachers of limited-English-proficient (LEP) students. Specialists in both fields produced a three-part training package consisting of an instructor’s guide and a video program, to be used as an introduction to and rationale for using the approach, and as a general blueprint for a text and workbook produced by the Center for Applied Linguistics and entitled “English Skills for Algebra.” The report describes activities undertaken in developing the materials and assessing their effectiveness as compared to the conventional workshop method of teacher training. Results of interviews and surveys indicate that the materials provide the necessary classroom guidance… Continue Reading →
