tandfonline.com – The role of students’ approaches in foreign language learning

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The purpose of the study is to analyse how second language learning is supported by language learning strategies (LLS) and various learning approaches, namely, self-efficacy, instrumental motivation, effort and perseverance, and preferences for cooperative or competitive learning. The sample of the research was composed of students in Hungary in Years 5–8 (10–14-year olds, N = 1600). Two questionnaires were used to collect the data: an adapted version of Oxford’s “Strategies Inventory for Language Learning” (SILL) questionnaire and the “Student Characteristics as Learners” questionnaire. A path analysis showed that learning components can be explained differently via language learning strategies and learning approaches. Our results have confirmed our hypotheses that strategy use significantly influences several learning approaches in the sample. Students,… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Stimulating language awareness in the foreign language classroom: exploring EFL teaching practices

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This study reports on EFL teachers’ self-reported teaching practices aimed at stimulating students’ language awareness. It investigates whether, and to what extent, awareness-raising practices are currently implemented in EFL secondary education in the Netherlands, how these practices can be characterised, and how awareness-raising practices can be developed and further integrated into foreign language education. In a semi-structured interview, 10 teachers were asked to provide examples which they believed stimulated students’ awareness of language. A total of 41 teaching practices were collected. Analysis of teaching practices revealed that approximately half of all self-reported practices could be characterised as awareness-raising. These practices often integrated multiple topics, included authentic contexts, back-and-forth interaction and provided students with the opportunity to reflect on… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Foreign Language Anxiety in a New English Program in Thailand

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Thailand boasts a robust ESL system in both public and private schools, where students learn various subjects from native speakers in the English language. Foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) is a subject that is relevant to ESL instruction and learning. This study assesses associations between FLCA and academic performance in English and math subjects at a Thai government school which is in its second year of employing native English speaking teachers. 424 students were administered FLCA surveys, which were compared to English and math exams. Moderate-high FLCA levels were found in the sample, with no difference between an immersion group and non-immersion groups. A weak, negative correlation was found between FLCA and English performance (r = -0.163). Thai language math exam scores were significantly better than English… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The Netherlands are quite unique in that the Dutch have always learned various foreign languages. Until 1940, French was the most important foreign language. Between roughly 1870 and 1970, Dutch learners in grammar schools and higher secondary schools were even obliged to learn three foreign languages: French, German and English. Since 1970, however, English has become the first foreign language, and proficiency in French and German has declined. As for methodology, Dutch foreign language teaching/learning (FLT) has always taken a practical stand, in which the question ‘does it work?’ is paramount. This article provides an overview of the developments that have characterised Dutch FLT from approximately 1500 to the present day. Link til kilde

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This ‘state of the art’ review on the history of language teaching in Portugal provides an opportunity for a historiographical analysis, highlighting the relationships between languages, the links between languages and educational policy and implementation, and the cultural implications resulting from this. Researching language teaching and learning inevitably involves exploring a particular world view from a historiographical and ideological point of view. From this perspective, we focus in this article on the notion of ‘disciplinarisation’ in order to develop a picture of foreign language teaching/learning in Portugal during the nineteenth century, the period that has been most studied by the Portuguese Association for the Teaching of the History of Foreign Languages and Literatures (APHELLE). This period saw the… Continue Reading
