Eric.ed.gov – The PIAAC Numeracy Framework: A Guide to Instruction

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Program for International Assessment of Adult Competencies, better known as PIAAC, developed a numeracy assessment framework that was used internationally to assess adults’ numeracy skills. The assessment gauged adults’ (aged 16-65 years) numeracy skills across a full range, from adults with very low levels of numeracy to college level math ability. PIAAC’s assessment framework is based on two concepts: math as being use-oriented and math proficiency as a continuum. While this framework was designed to measure adults’ numeracy ability in a structured assessment environment (including adults’ home with trained evaluators), it is useful beyond its original intent. This framework can be used to help teachers better understand how to differentiate instruction while still focusing on a particular theme or topic in a classroom, ensuring rich discussions… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Encouraging Girls in Math and Science. IES Practice Guide. NCER 2007-2003

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This National Center for Education Research (NCER) Practice Guide is the second in a series of IES guides in education. The goal of this practice guide is to formulate specific and coherent evidence-based recommendations that educators can use to encourage girls in the fields of math and science. The target audience is teachers and other school personnel with direct contact with students, such as coaches, counselors, and principals. The practice guide includes specific recommendations for educators and the quality of evidence that supports these recommendations. This practice guide provides five recommendations for encouraging girls in math and science. These recommendations together form a coherent statement: To encourage girls in math and science, we need to begin first with their beliefs about their abilities in these areas, second… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Enhancing STEM in P-3 Education. Policy Guide

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: States have often introduced programs supporting science, technology, engineering and math in the secondary grades. Yet the evidence of STEM’s positive impact on young children’s development makes a compelling case for engaging learners in pre-K through third grade in consistent, authentic and high-quality STEM experiences. High-quality P-3 STEM learning need not — and should not — be viewed as an add-on to an already crowded set of learning objectives. Instead, states can integrate early STEM opportunities to advance developmentally appropriate practice and young learners’ growth in literacy and numeracy, executive function and 21st century skills. This Policy Guide, informed by experts in early education and STEM fields, identifies policies and actions a state can adopt to bring STEM opportunities to the early grades. Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Math. [A Sample Guide for Integrating Career Education into Math].

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This set of mathematics instructional materials are examples of how a teacher can integrate career education into math. Six topics related to the career education concept are featured. “Sample Math Problems” was written for a class studying about jobs in a bakery, and the problems are ones that would be encountered in a bakery. “Careers as Related to Math” is a sample of how career education can be effectively correlated and integrated into math texts (Elementary School Mathematics published by Addison-Wesley) for grades 4, 5, and 6. Occupations requiring high school or college education and/or on-the-job training are listed, and the concepts required for most math-related occupations are itemized. Other materials include an outline of concepts and enrichment materials to be used along with the Addison-Wesley textbook.… Continue Reading
