eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper presents results of a study that sought to answer the question, “How does integrating dance and math in an intense co-teaching model of integration affect student attitudes toward learning math?” The goal of the dance/math project was to engage students in math in ways that reached students’ multiple intelligences and encouraged them to make complex connections and try new problem solving techniques. The classroom teachers who designed and implemented the project hypothesized that students who worked with a dancer once a week to learn math concepts would become more engaged in mathematics and have more successful and positive experiences with mathematics than students who did not work with a dancer. Overall there was a significant difference between the dance/math students’ and the non-dance/math students’ attitudes… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The San Francisco Math Leadership Project is an attempt to re-educate elementary teachers, many of whom do not consider mathematics their favorite subject and have limited mathematics backgrounds. The task is to increase the mathematics knowledge of these teachers and build their confidence in their own ability to do mathematics and to teach it. Leadership development begins with a 4-week summer institute and continues with workshops presented by participants at their school sites. In this paper, discussions include background of former participants, goals of the project, and leadership activities of former participants. Three graphs and three tables are included, as well as survey forms and responses. (DC) Link til kilde

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In 1981, an estimated 25% of the nation’s secondary school teachers had summer jobs outside education. This report on the current status and future directions of employer-sponsored teacher internship programs has an underlying theme: that such programs can make a serious contribution to the career and professional development needs of teachers and to the quality of instruction. Chapter 1 considers how employer-sponsored teacher internships are connected to educational reform. The second chapter discusses the purposes of teacher internships. Eleven pioneer teacher internship programs are briefly described in chapter 3. Many of these programs focus on improving mathematics and science instruction; many also place a strong emphasis on communication skills. All rely heavily on the leadership and motivation of employers to improve scientific and mathematical understanding and competence.… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Designed for principals of elementary and middle schools, this guide addresses the essential elements of a high-quality mathematics program and is intended to be a practical, ongoing resource. The guide begins with an overview of the important issues in mathematics education and a discussion of the basic elements of a mathematics program. It continues with guidance on how mathematics should be taught, ways to use assessment data to inform mathematics instruction, and approaches for assisting students who are struggling in mathematics. Finally, it outlines strategies for collaborating with teachers and parents, improving teachers’ skills in delivering mathematics instruction, and conducting effective observations of mathematics lessons. The guide includes checklists and other materials to use to evaluate a school’s mathematics program and to collaborate with teachers and parents;… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This keynote address focuses on equity in science and mathematics education. The science and math achievement of minority and poor children are discussed from an instructional policy perspective with emphasis on who gets access to what knowledge. The discussion about the politics of knowledge acquisition involves a discussion of race, class, and gender and highlights the fact that even though there have been substantial gains, the fact remains that a student’s status as minority or poor or female severely impairs that student’s likelihood of acquiring a quality educational experience, particularly with regard to science and math. An analysis of data reveals that with respect to curriculum there are no substandard schools; however, there are significant differences in teacher qualifications and teacher attitudes. Compared to students not in… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: By participating in these class activities, students will acquire mathematical skills and at the same time learn about aging. Topics related to aging are often quantitative, and therefore, subject to mathematical analysis and procedures. The activities, which contain teacher suggestions and all student handouts, deal with seven topics. In the first activity, “Graying of America,” students extract data from a graph of U.S. population growth to solve problems which illustrate changes in the age structure of society as they and their parents grow older. “Life Expectancy” is the topic of the second activity. Students use actuarial data to compute the probability of surviving a given number of years beyond a certain age. In the third activity, “Compound Interest and Population Growth,” students gain insight into population growth… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Mathematics has become increasingly important in this technological age. That is why it is even more important for children to learn mathematics at home as well as in school. This second edition of “Helping Your Children Learn Math” is for parents of children in kindergarten through fifth grade. It has been revised to include a variety of activities that will help children learn and apply mathematical concepts such as geometry, algebra, measurement, statistics, and probability in useful and fun ways. All of the 29 activities in this book relate mathematics to everyday life and complement many school mathematics lessons. Additional resources are also listed at the end. (ASK) Link til kilde

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This unit is intended to teach estimation skills in such a way as to be relevant and useful to students as they apply them in various problem-solving activities. The teaching activities feature the earth, exploration into space, and the other worlds in the solar system. The teacher’s guide contains four modules. Module I suggests the use of several multi-media experiences to set the stage for the activities that follow. Module II, “The Solar System,” incorporates teaching activities dealing with rounding numbers, estimation of sums, differences, products and quotients, graphing, and the application of these skills in problem solving. Module III, “The Space Shuttle,” addresses the use of the space shuttle and stresses the mathematical concepts of ratio and proportion. Module IV,”The Space Colony,” uses geometric concepts as… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A project was designed to evaluate TEAM, a math anxiety reduction program for undergraduate students preparing to be elementary school teachers. The program consisted of two main components: (1) instruction intended to improve problem solving skills using the areas of patterns, probability, measurement, approximation, and estimation; and (2) activities designed to reduce math anxiety and to increase confidence in mathematics. The outcome evaluation for a two-year materials development project consisted of replications of small-scale trials of the materials. Outcome measures included both attitudinal and math concept instruments. Future evaluation research in this or similar programs can concentrate in several areas arising from the development and evaluation of the TEAM materials and course. Areas such as the instructional approach, the integration of testing and teaching, teacher confidence and… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This document contains the efforts of a group of teachers to develop curricular materials designed to correlate the subject matter of mathematics with that of a shop course in power mechanics. It is not an adaptation of traditional courses in mathematics, but an attempt to integrate the subject matter of mathematics into the concepts utilized in power mechanics classes. Content is presented under the following chapter headings: Fractions, Decimals, Per Cent, Ratio and Proportion, Directed Numbers, Formulas, Metric System, Geometry, Powers and Roots, and Shop Business. These sections of study are designed to be as inclusive as possible. Included are all activities with which a student will be involved in a teaching situation, along with evaluation materials, worksheets, guides, and other materials that will be used. Each… Continue Reading →
