tandfonline.com – Using video to support teachers’ reflective practice : A literature review

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Given the effort invested in workplace professional development programs, professional learning, as it takes place in context, should be examined closely to help inform the design of training mechanisms that will truly contribute to professional development. In particular, given the interest and growth in the use of video for the development of reflective practice among professionals, it appears relevant to further examine video-based mechanisms. Teacher education constitutes a fertile ground in this regard. This article thus presents a literature review on the use of video for the professional development of teachers, particularly regarding their ability to reflect on their own teaching practices. To this end, 89 articles were analyzed to bring out the participants’ learning, in terms of… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Developing teachers’ responsive pedagogy in mathematics, does it lead to short-term effects on student learning?

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract In this study, we examine the short-term effects of an intervention aimed at developing teachers’ responsive pedagogy in mathematics. The study analyses how an emphasis on responsive pedagogy in 9th grade classrooms over a period of seven months might strengthen students’ feedback, self-regulated learning, self-efficacy and achievement in mathematics. Nine schools attended as intervention group (N = 40 classes; 1003 students). 11 compatible schools (N = 37 classes; 896 students) were recruited as a control group. Students responded to a pre-post questionnaire and conducted a pre-post achievement test. Results show small, significant differences between the total scores for the pre- and post-measures in the intervention group for the variables elaboration, task value motivation, effort and persistence, self-efficacy and self-conception. Significant differences between… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Evaluating visible learning: Mathematics teachers’ practices in technology-enhanced classrooms

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The present study examined the extent to which mathematics teachers’ practices reflect visible learning (VL) at their schools and in their technology-enhanced classrooms. A number of determining factors influencing mathematics teachers to practice VL were also investigated. The Visible Learning Scale (VLS) instrument was conceptually developed based on Hattie’s eight mind frames of VL. The survey results from 119 participants indicated that Saudi mathematics teachers expressed a moderate to great level of evidence-based VL practice to enhance and promote students’ learning achievements and progress. The results also showed that the competence level of information and communication technology (ICT) integration is a determining and influential factor that enhances the practices teachers undertake to achieve a better effect on their… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Experiences of teachers in implementing inclusion of learners with special education needs in selected Fort Beaufort District primary schools, South Africa

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The implementation of inclusion policy for learners with special education needs has been a matter of interest for South African schools. This study sought to explore pockets of good practice found in the experiences of teachers in implementing inclusion of learners with special education needs (SEN). A qualitative research approach was employed and a case study design used. The study purposively sampled eight teachers and eight principals from eight selected primary schools, as well as one provincial and three district officials. Semi-structured interviews were employed as instruments of data collection, and the data were analysed thematically. The findings revealed that teachers accommodate learners with SEN despite the fact that some of them do not have qualifications/training in SEN.… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Preservice Education of Math Teachers Using Paradoxes.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Teacher preparation curriculum at Technion–Israel Institute of Technology (Israel) includes courses intended to bridge the gap between the pure mathematics courses and those in psychology. The focus of this paper is an experimental program for one of these courses and data collected while implementing it. This is a second report on a naturalistic study in which mathematical paradoxes were used in the preservice education of high school mathematics teachers. The potential of paradoxes was tested for improving student-teachers’ mathematical concepts and raising students pedagogical awareness of the role of falacious reasoning in the development of mathematical knowledge. Discussions include the psychological and mathematical background, the experimental courses and data collection procedures, the students, and findings. Examples of paradoxes are given. Included are 36 references. (DC) Link til… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Supporting Novice Teachers of the Arts

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper examines and reports on beginning generalist teacher self-efficacy, which Bandura (1997) suggests plays an important part in student outcomes. In 2008, 201 beginning generalist teachers throughout the state of Queensland, Australia, participated in a study that aimed to provide a snapshot of current perceptions towards support in schools for the arts. Beginning teachers were asked to rank their school support for a number of different subjects in the school curriculum and provide written justification for these rankings. Results suggest that beginning teachers perceived a general lack of support for the teaching of the arts in their classroom, compared to English and maths. They reported that schools provided greater financial support, assistance and professional development for the teaching of literacy and numeracy with a view to… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Exploring Links between Foundation Phase Teachers’ Content Knowledge and Their Example Spaces

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper explores two foundation phase teachers’ example spaces (a space in the mind where examples exist) when teaching number-related topics in relation to snapshots of their content knowledge (CK). Data was collected during a pilot primary maths for teaching course that included assessments of teacher content knowledge (CK). An analysis of a content-knowledge focused pre-test developed for the larger study indicated a relatively high score for one teacher and a low score for the other. Using Rowland’s (2008) framework, an analysis of classroom practice showed associations between a higher CK and the extent of a teacher’s example space and more coherent connections between different representational forms. Although no hard claims or generalisations of the link between teachers’ example spaces and their level of mathematics content knowledge… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Teachers’ Perspectives on Promoting Reading and Writing for Pupils with Various Linguistic Backgrounds in Grade 1 of Primary School

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of teachers’ perspectives on promoting reading and writing for pupils with various linguistic backgrounds in grade 1. Focus group interviews were conducted with 17 teachers who work in preschool classes and in grade 1. The teachers’ perspectives on reading and writing can be characterised as balanced, in the sense that the teachers describe how they work with both the technical and the learning-oriented dimension. The number of different languages spoken in their classes is regarded in a positive manner, but it also leads to major challenges, such as not having enough time for all of the pupils and not having sufficient knowledge of multilingualism.
