eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this study was to examine the involvement of higher education STEM faculty in disciplinary departments with pre-K-12 public schools. In particular, the study focused on 15 nationally funded awards, targeted at education in mathematics, in the National Science Foundation’s Math and Science Partnership (NSF MSP) Program. One important goal of the MSP Program is to further cultural change in the STEM departments. Other studies have analyzed the effectiveness of efforts to engage STEM faculty in education activities; however, the groups studied previously included those faculty whose primary research field was STEM education. The study examines the relationship between student achievement and teacher participation in one of several incentive model programs. The research also explores award winning teachers and their association with higher gains by students in reading and mathematics achievement scores. A stratified random sample of schools was selected from which all TIP award recipients and a matched control sample of nonparticipants were selected as subjects, limiting the study to classroom teachers of reading and/or math in grades 1-6 during the 1988-89 school year. The section for secondary school teachers contains information on curriculum, software for the classroom, and Internet access in the schools. That’s why every year, TNTP awards the Fishman Prize for Superlative Classroom Practice: to celebrate a select cohort of public school teachers who demonstrate exceptionally effective teaching with students from high-poverty communities. Awards based on individual teacher performance were introduced in 2005-06, and the program evolved into Accelerating Student Progress: Increasing Results and Expectations (ASPIRE) in 2006-07 with the incorporation of value-added methodology. This evaluation focuses on the 2010-11 year of ASPIRE, for which HISD paid out over $35 million. Award programs generally aim to increase student achievement by rewarding educators financially. HISD additionally designed ASPIRE to encourage teacher cooperation, align with the district’s other school-improvement initiatives, use value-added data to reward teachers reliably and consistently, include core teachers at all grade levels, and address alignment of curriculum to tests on which awards are based.
