eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study intends to compare and contrast student and school factors that are associated with students’ mathematics self-efficacy in the United States and China. Using hierarchical linear regressions to analyze the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 data, this study compares math self-efficacy, achievement, and variables such as math teacher support and socioeconomic status (SES) between 15-year-old students in the U.S. and in Shanghai, China. The findings suggest that on average, students from Shanghai showed higher math self-efficacy and better achievement than those of American students. However, at the student level, similar positive relationships between math teacher support and math self-efficacy and between SES and math self-efficacy were found in both locations. Additional evidence on these relationships can suggest specific hypotheses for the future study of such instructional practices, which, in turn, will provide research evidence that could inform professional development of teachers and the writing of instructional materials. This study employed quantitative method of research using 8th grade instructors from South East Dallas Texas school district. Data was collected via Microsoft Excel and SPSS computation. Eric.ed.gov – Empowering Teachers with Low-Intensity Strategies to Support Instruction: Within-Activity Choices in Third-Grade Math with Null Effects

In this study, we investigated the effects of within-activity choices offered during math by third-grade teachers to participating students with behavioral and academic needs. We utilized a professional development model to train teachers to implement instructional choice in the classroom while collecting direct observation data on student’s academic engagement. Teachers were able to implement practices with high levels of integrity and collect momentary time sampling data on one student with high levels of reliability. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: We use panel data in Washington State to study the extent to which teacher assignments between fourth and eighth grade explain gaps between advantaged and disadvantaged students–as defined by underrepresented minority status (URM) and eligibility for free or reduced price lunch (FRL)–in their eighth grade math test scores and high school course taking. We find some significant gaps between advantaged and disadvantaged students in the value added of the teachers to which they are assigned in these grades, although gaps in middle school grades are sensitive to the specification of value added. Eric.ed.gov – Collaboration between Mathematics Facilitators and Preschool Teachers Using the Innovative “Senso-Math” Preschool Program

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This article presents a mixed-method study of the innovative “Senso-Math” preschool program and the reactions of both the facilitators, who underwent a special training program, and the preschool teachers in whose classes the program was implemented. The goal of the program is to enhance mathematical development in preschool children through the intervention of trained facilitators who bring the adjunct program into preschools. The results indicate a positive change in the attitudes of the facilitators to their professional calling and, after an adjustment period, a positive attitude overall regarding the facilitators’ contribution to mathematics education in the preschool as evidenced by the significant relationships that developed between the facilitators and the preschool teachers.
