eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A professional development experience for science and mathematics teachers that included coaches was provided for ten science and math teachers. This professional development experience had the teachers develop a lesson that utilized the engineering context to teach a science or mathematics concept through guided inquiry as an instructional methodology. Developing a guided inquiry lesson can be a difficult task for teachers. Science teachers have inquiry standards that they must meet and research indicates that teaching through guided inquiry is an effective method of teaching science content. Mathematics teachers are being asked to incorporate more active and cooperative instructional experiences in in their classrooms. Results of the professional development experience indicate that all but one of the teachers were successful in developing and implementing guided inquiry lessons within… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The “Framing Student Success: Connecting Rigorous Visual Arts, Math and Literacy Learning” experimental demonstration project was designed to develop and test an instructional program integrating high-quality, standards-based instruction in the visual arts, math, and literacy. Developed and implemented by arts-in-education organization Studio in a School (STUDIO), in partnership with the New York City Department of Education, the “Framing Student Success” curriculum was designed by experienced professional artist instructors collaborating with school-based visual arts, math, and literacy specialists and classroom teachers. “The Framing Student Success” curriculum units were designed to make explicit connections between subjects (visual arts and ELA or math), while maintaining the integrity, depth and rigor of instruction in both subject areas. While students were receiving arts-integrated instruction during each of the twelve six-week units, classroom… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Community colleges nationwide are looking for solutions to help students complete developmental (remedial) math–a known barrier to graduation. Some are offering computer-assisted, modular developmental math courses that allow students to earn credits incrementally and move through the curriculum at their own pace. One of these modularized courses, ModMath, was created at Tarrant County College (TCC) near Fort Worth, Texas. It reorganizes the content of TCC’s two semester-long developmental math courses into a set of six modules, each of which is five weeks long. The four primary components of the ModMath intervention are: a diagnostic assessment that places students in a starting module; individual registration into three modules per course section each semester; computer-based instruction delivered online through an instructional software program; and personalized, on-demand assistance in class… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Teachers of senior secondary mathematics are required to contend with a number of challenges including covering the prescribed curriculum, differentiating the content for a range of learners, and preparing students for externally imposed assessment tasks. The flipped classroom is gaining in popularity as an approach that can be used to address these challenges. This paper provides a framework that can be used to interpret the affordances of a flipped classroom within the context of teaching secondary mathematics and the motivational factors that influence the uptake of the approach. Data analysed through the framework showed that students believed that the approach enabled them to have autonomy over their learning and achieve their goals. The study has implications for senior secondary teachers and students, particularly in terms of meeting… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Little research exists on effective ways to prepare secondary mathematics and science teachers to work with English language learners (ELLs) in mainstream mathematics and science (subsequently referred to as STEM) classrooms. Given the achievement gap that exists between ELLs and their native-speaking counterparts in STEM subjects, as well as the growing numbers of ELLs in US schools, this becomes a critical issue, as academic success for these students depends on the effectiveness of instruction they receive not only in English as a second language classes (ESL), but in mainstream classrooms as well. This article reports on the effects of a program restructuring that implemented coursework specifically designed to prepare pre-service and in-service mathematics, science, and ESL teachers to work with ELLs in their content and ESL classrooms… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Instructors in higher education are very familiar with the Likert scale Students’ Evaluation of Teaching (SET) used to evaluate teaching. Researchers have raised concerns about biases affecting the results of SET surveys, as well as their validity and reliability and use in high-stakes decision making. Here, we demonstrate that Q methodology, identified as an 80-year-old mixed method, is better suited to determine the differing student views about a college math education course. We will discuss how Q used for SET can produce results that are more helpful in assisting faculty in improving their teaching effectiveness and in redesigning courses while also providing more informative SET results for faculty evaluations. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Are pre-service teachers able to notice their strengths and challenges in teaching? This article reports on a study of pre-service teachers’ teaching performance being simultaneously evaluated by themselves and their professor. Thirty-two pre-service teachers created and planned mathematics lessons approved by their professor to be taught in elementary classrooms. The teaching experience of those teachers was videotaped and evaluated by the professor using the Field Assessment Observation Form in the areas of content knowledge, instruction, assessment, classroom management, and affective skills. Furthermore, the pre-service teachers completed a Self-Reflection answering their professors’ questions regarding their teaching experience. Mixed methods research analyzed the data. The findings of the quantitative data indicate pre-service teachers evaluated themselves higher than what their professor did in assessment and time management. Moreover, the findings… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This article presents a mixed-method study of the innovative “Senso-Math” preschool program and the reactions of both the facilitators, who underwent a special training program, and the preschool teachers in whose classes the program was implemented. The goal of the program is to enhance mathematical development in preschool children through the intervention of trained facilitators who bring the adjunct program into preschools. The results indicate a positive change in the attitudes of the facilitators to their professional calling and, after an adjustment period, a positive attitude overall regarding the facilitators’ contribution to mathematics education in the preschool as evidenced by the significant relationships that developed between the facilitators and the preschool teachers. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study explored the significance of technology integration familiarization and the subsequent PD provided to rural middle school teachers with several opportunities to gain technological skills for technology use in rural middle school math and science classrooms. In order to explore the use of technology in rural schools, this study surveyed 63 rural middle school math and science teachers on technology use and PD offered for classroom integration. This study provided perceptions on the effect of personal and previous technology training for rural school teachers towards technology. The results show that there was need for PD to familiarize rural teachers with newer and essential instructional technologies and to gain technological skills experience in instructional technology integration. The results also show that teachers want to use technology to… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In Yucatec Maya middle schools in the Yucatán, math scores are low and drop out rates are high. Although addressing larger social and economic causes may ameliorate these issues, improving math instruction may be a more immediate, feasible approach. This ethnographic, mixed-methods study explores community approaches to problem-solving relevant to middle school math classrooms. Findings indicate: (1) community members possess specialized, practical mathematical expertise that is overlooked in the research around rural, impoverished students, and (2) formal math instruction misses opportunities to capitalize upon cultural approaches involving autonomy and improvisational expertise. Results are relevant for curriculum reform in the US, México, and beyond. [For the complete proceedings, see ED583608.] Link til kilde
