Eric.ed.gov – Evaluation of the Effectiveness of the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI). Final Report. NCEE 2012-4008

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report presents the results of an experiment conducted in Alabama beginning in the 2006/07 school year, to determine the effectiveness of the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI), which aims to improve mathematics and science achievement in the state’s K-12 schools. This study is the first randomized controlled trial testing the effectiveness of AMSTI in improving mathematics problem solving and science achievement in upper-elementary and middle schools. AMSTI is an initiative specific to Alabama and was developed and supported through state resources. An important finding is the positive and statistically significant effect of AMSTI on mathematics achievement as measured by the SAT 10 mathematics problem solving assessment administered by the state to students in grades 4-8. After one year in the program, student mathematics scores… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – What’s in a Teacher Test? Assessing the Relationship between Teacher Licensure Test Scores and Student STEM Achievement and Course-Taking. Working Paper 158

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: We investigate the relationship between teacher licensure test scores and student test achievement and high school course-taking. We focus on three subject/grade combinations–middle school math, ninth-grade algebra and geometry, and ninth-grade biology–and find evidence that a teacher’s basic skills test scores are modestly predictive of student achievement in middle and high school math and highly predictive of student achievement in high school biology. A teacher’s subject-specific licensure test scores are a consistent and statistically significant predictor of student achievement only in high school biology. Finally, we find little evidence that students assigned to middle school teachers with higher basic-skills test scores are more likely to take advanced math and science courses in high school. Eric.ed.gov – School Racial and Economic Composition & Math and Science Achievement. Research Brief No. 1. Updated

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This is the first in a series of three research briefs summarizing findings from the newest and most rigorous research related to racial and socioeconomic diversity in public schools. The studies on which this brief is based were published recently in three special issues of the peer-reviewed journal, “Teachers College Record,” edited by Professors Roslyn Arlin Mickelson of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Kathryn Borman of the University of South Florida. The weight of evidence from these studies demonstrates that racially isolated, high-poverty schools tend to negatively influence math and science course-taking patterns and achievement as measured by test scores. Meanwhile, under certain conditions, lower poverty schools and schools that do not enroll highly disproportionate shares of African American and/or Latino students tend to… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – An Entrepreneurship Venture for Training K-12 Teachers to Use Engineering as a Context for Learning

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this paper, the authors present their experiences from participating in a National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps L training program established for business startups, using Blank’s Lean LaunchPad, Osterwalder’s Business Model Canvas, and associated tools. They used the entrepreneurial skills acquired through this training to scale-up their emerging innovation, the Cincinnati Engineering Enhanced Math and Science Program (CEEMS), which had been developed, implemented, and evaluated with successful results over a period of seven years in a targeted 14 school-district partnership in Greater Cincinnati. The overriding goal was to improve student learning and success rates in K-12 math and science courses by helping to accelerate the process of bringing effective educational innovation, CEEMS, to scale. In CEEMS, teachers were trained in using challenge-based learning (CBL) and the engineering… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – WWC Review of the Report “The Effectiveness of Secondary Math Teachers from Teach for America and the Teaching Fellows Programs.” What Works Clearinghouse Single Study Review

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The 2013 study, “The Effectiveness of Secondary Math Teachers from Teach for America and the Teaching Fellows Programs,” examined whether students taught by teachers in the “Teach for America” (“TFA”) and “The New Teacher Project Teaching Fellows” (“Teaching Fellows”) programs had greater mathematics achievement than students taught by teachers who were not in either of these programs. The study was conducted in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years. Researchers found that “Teaching Fellows” teachers were no more effective at improving student mathematics achievement scores than comparison teachers. This study is well executed and meets What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) group design standards without reservations. A separate WWC single study review (see ED545118) provides information about the “TFA” intervention. Three appendices are included: (1) Study details; (2) Outcome measure… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Effects of Health Insurance Coverage on the Math Achievement Trajectories of School Children in Yuma County, Arizona: Implications for Education Accountability Policy

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: U.S. Federal and state education policies place considerable emphasis on assessing the effects that schools and teachers have on student test score performance. It is important for education policy makers to also consider other factors that can affect student achievement. This study finds that an exogenous school factor, discontinuous health insurance coverage, leads to a deficit in math achievement over time. A sample of Yuma County, Arizona public school students who experienced an illness or injury and whose health insurance coverage status was known were selected for inclusion into the study over five consecutive school years (1999-2003). The longitudinal math achievement trajectory of students who had private health insurance coverage was compared to students who had discontinuous coverage. Net of a student’s poverty status and other background… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Improving Student Outcomes with mCLASS: Math, a Technology-Enhanced CBM and Diagnostic Interview Assessment

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The No Child Left Behind Act resulted in increased school-level implementation of assessment-based school interventions that aim to improve student performance. Diagnostic assessments are included among these interventions, designed to help teachers use evidence about student performance to modify and differentiate instruction and improve student outcomes. The mCLASS: Math software (Ginsburg, Cannon, Eisenband, & Pappas, 2006) is comprised of screening/progress monitoring curriculum-based measures (CBMs) and Diagnostic Interviews to help teachers identify students’ skill levels. mCLASS: Math enables teachers to target instruction to each student’s needs and monitor each student’s progress toward mastery. Educators are expected to use the constantly updated diagnostic information to improve ongoing instruction and increase student achievement. Schools have found that the use of mCLASS: Math helps support curriculum, instruction, and assessment (Ginsburg et… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Can UTeach? Assessing the Relative Effectiveness of STEM Teachers. Working Paper 173

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: UTeach is a well-known, university-based program designed to increase the number of high-quality science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers in the workforce. The UTeach program was originally developed by faculty at the University of Texas at Austin but has rapidly spread and is now available at 44 universities in 21 states; it is expected to produce more than 9,000 math and science teachers by 2020. Despite substantial investment and rapid program diffusion, there is little evidence to date about the effectiveness of UTeach graduates. Using administrative data from the state of Texas, we measure UTeach impacts on student test scores in math and science in middle schools and high schools. We find that students taught by UTeach teachers perform significantly better on end-of-grade tests in math… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – What Works Clearinghouse Quick Review: “The Effectiveness of Secondary Math Teachers from Teach for America and the Teaching Fellows Program”

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The study examined the impact of Teach for America (TFA) and The New Teacher Project’s Teaching Fellows (TF) programs on the mathematics achievement of students in grades 6-12. TFA and TF provide alternative routes to teacher certification and aim to provide high-quality teachers to schools in low-income areas. TFA and TF were studied separately, using students in eight states during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years. For each analysis, students were randomly assigned to either an intervention (TFA or TF) or a comparison teacher who taught the same mathematics subject. The TFA analysis included more than 5,700 students, and the TF analysis included more than 6,800 students. End-of-year state mathematics achievement tests were administered to middle school students. End-of-course mathematics assessments, developed by the Northwest Evaluation Association, were… Continue Reading
