eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Developed in concert with twelve special schools (Prep to Year 12) in Queensland, this paper regarding reasonable adjustments that promote quality differentiated teaching practice in special education math classrooms represents the knowledge and expertise of fifty teachers in special education. Survey responses and empirical evidence suggest that three conclusions are warranted: 1) That a focus on reasonable adjustments which is highly individualised, comprehensive and ongoing, needs to be strengthened to positively affect student learning and progression; 2) Neither assessment of student learning in mathematics or failure to respond to the results is sufficient for making judgements about students’ learning; and 3) special education teachers do require strong knowledge and skill with differentiating their teaching practice to ensure that students access the curriculum at appropriate year levels. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The National Center for Special Education Research (NCSER) supports research that contributes to the identification of effective strategies for improving the performance of current teachers and other instructional personnel, and related services providers in ways that increase student learning and achievement, social and behavioral skills, and high school transition outcomes for students with or at risk for disabilities. This report presents highlights of NCSER-funded research that: (1) targets teacher data-based decision-making; (2) content area professional development in language, reading and math; (3) professional development for early childhood teachers; (4) professional development for teachers of children with autism spectrum disorders; and (5) tools for evaluating special education teachers. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Since the enactment of the “Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975” (“EHA”), Public Law (P.L.) 94-142 and its successor statute, the “Individuals with Disabilities Education Act” (“IDEA” or “act”), the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education (secretary) (and her predecessor, the commissioner of education at the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare) have been required to transmit to Congress an annual report to inform Congress and the public of the progress being made in implementing the act. The annual reports to Congress reflect a history of persistent commitment and effort to expand educational opportunities for children with disabilities. The “40th Annual Report to Congress on the Implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2018” describes the nation’s progress in: (1) providing a… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Co-teaching models have been established in research as an instructional delivery method to provide instruction to diverse students in an inclusive general education setting. Research of inclusive classrooms where general education and special education teachers co-instruct indicates learning for students with learning disabilities (LD) is improved (Cramer, Liston, Nevin & Thousand, 2010). Co-teaching models have been addressed in the literature, however, responsibilities of general and special education teachers regarding co-planning, co-instruction and co-assessing to implement co-teaching effectively requires further investigation (Mastropieri et al., 2005). This qualitative study investigated two co-taught elementary classrooms. The case study examined information from teachers in reading and math co-taught classrooms to document method of implementation and to gain insight into participants’ knowledge and perceptions of co-teaching. Information was gathered from two elementary… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper contributes importantly to the growing literature on the training of special education teachers and how it translates into classroom practice and student achievement. The authors examine the impact of pre-service preparation and in-service formal and informal training on the ability of teachers to promote academic achievement among students with disabilities. Using student-level longitudinal data from Florida over a five-year span the authors estimate “value-added” models of student achievement. There is little support for the efficacy of in-service professional development courses focusing on special education. However, teachers with advanced degrees are more effective in boosting the math achievement of students with disabilities than are those with only a baccalaureate degree. Also pre-service preparation in special education has statistically significant and quantitatively substantial effects on the ability… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Flipped learning is a popular pedagogical approach in K-12 and in higher education (Graziano, 2017), however minimal research exists on the effectiveness of flipped learning in special education teacher preparation courses. Special education teacher candidates enrolled in five sections of a special education math methods course engaged with interactive, flipped “learning lessons” prior to class. During class, they participated in extension activities and lesson planning. The researchers utilized mixed methods to evaluate the impact of performance on and engagement with these learning lessons and found positive predictive relationships with student achievement on all individual summative assignments. Nearly all students agreed flipped learning was useful in helping them meet the course outcomes. Most students specifically credited the flipped lessons as a facilitator of their learning because they allowed… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report projects California teacher retirements at the state and county levels for 2014/15-2023/24, updating a previously published report that projected California teacher retirements for 2006/07-2015/16. The current study finds that 25 percent of California teachers who were teaching in 2013/14 are projected to retire over 2014/15-2023/24. The proportion projected to retire varies greatly across counties, from 19 percent in Sutter County to 61 percent in Sierra County. This suggests that counties will confront very different staffing situations over the 10-year period because of projected retirements. Rural counties that are projected to have higher retirement rates tend to lie along the state’s northern coast and near the state’s northern and eastern borders; lower retirement rates are projected in and around metropolitan areas (such as San Francisco, Sacramento, Orange County/Los… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This article reports the findings of a joint unit plan critique project between two preservice teacher cohorts seeking teacher certification in general education and special education respectively. The paper addressed three questions: 1) What common affordances does this joint project have for the general and special education preservice teachers? 2) What unique affordances does it have for each of the groups? 3) What do the preservice teachers learn about the use of visuals, technology, and UDL principles to create accessible math lessons for all students? The results showed that the project impacted positively on the preservice teachers by allowing them to gain deeper understanding of professional collaboration and use of technology and visual resources to differentiate instruction for all students. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: It is a well known fact that there is a discrete group of pupils with severe problems in the acquisition of mathematical skills. These problems go beyond a quantitative range, but differ qualitatively from the ways the pupils gain mathematical knowledge from their teachers in the classroom. The central thesis of this survey is the development of the educational digital game the “Four Forces”, and the teachers’ perceptions concerning whether the specific digital game reduce mathematic and memory difficulties in students with intellectual disabilities. This was achieved by comparing and contrasting the teachers’ perceptions on this particular issue through questionnaires via e-mail. Through the survey findings it has been observed that special needs teachers have similar perceptions about the digital math games, which they agree that they… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Staffing problems are pervasive in certain subject areas, such as secondary math and science and special education, where the combination of training requirements and relatively high alternative wages makes it difficult to attract and retain high-quality teachers. This project evaluated the impacts of the Florida Critical Teacher Shortage Program (FCTSP) and Teacher Recruitment and Retention Fund (TRRF) on the supply of new teachers and the retention of teachers in high-need areas such as special education, math, and science. The research: (1) addressed specific research questions pertaining to three programs (loan forgiveness, tuition reimbursement, and recruitment/retention bonuses); (2) investigated the causal effects of the programs; and (3) addressed questions related to the general characteristics of the program and participating teachers. The authors’ initial descriptive analysis indicated that FCTSP… Continue Reading →
