eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This document presents first-hand experiences of teachers and students using the Internet in K-12 math and science, as well as articles on getting the right hardware, choosing an Internet service provider, designing an online project, and fostering acceptable use. Chapters include: (1) “Something in the Air” (Linda Maston): a computer-assisted environmental investigation; (2) “Penumbra” (Greg Lockett): a cooperative astronomy project that led to one young woman finding friendship and a new mode of self-expression; (3) “Tall Shadows” (Karen Nishimoto): study of the Earth’s circumference using the Internet; (4) “Pedagogically Speaking” (Bill Barnes): an online class for fourth through eighth grade math teachers examining the best kinds of cooperative activites; (5) “Hoop Happenings” (Caroline Brennan and Joanna Yantosh): math problem solving via e-mail between elementary and middle school… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The aim of the Title I math program was to improve the teaching of mathematics at the primary level in Title I schools. School staff and Parent Advisory Committee members had suggested and helped plan the focus of the project. It was expected that improved teaching would raise the level of understanding of basic mathematics skills and concepts of primary pupils. Testing of the children, however, was incomplete and inconclusive. All Title I primary teachers were eligible for the project. Most of the teachers from 25 public and 9 nonpublic schools availed themselves of the services offered by the project during the two years, 1972-74, covered by this report. This evaluation concentrated on the activities of the project and teachers’ responses to those activities. Teachers received over… Continue Reading →

The CMESG is a group of mathematicians and mathematics educators who meet annually to discuss mathematics education issues at all levels of learning. The aims of the Study Group are: to advance education by organizing and coordinating national conferences and seminars to study and improve the theories of the study of mathematics or any other aspects of mathematics education in Canada at all levels; and to undertake research in mathematics education and to disseminate the results of this research. These proceedings include plenary lectures, working group reports, topic session descriptions, new PhD reports, and summaries of ad hoc and… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Carl D. Perkins Career Technical Improvement Act of 2006 encourages integration of academic instruction to improve student learning, impact employment skills of students, and enhance problem-solving skills by using authentic real-world situations. Academic integration is accomplished by integrating concepts of English, math, science, technology, etc., into career and technical education (CTE) course content, or by two teachers from different content areas collaborating to align and team-teach course standards. This article describes a project that provided an opportunity for educators in Greenhouse Management, Nutrition and Foods, and Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) to align course standards and curriculum while collaborating on plans to address the problem of obesity in the local school and community. With the help of a hydroponic garden, university researchers collaborated with CTE teachers… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In a series of mathematics education workshops in which teachers from adult basic education and vocational education worked together to design teaching situations on particular contents in mathematics in order to make explicit and bring into reflection the teaching strategies used by each group. The workshops constituted a common space of interaction for jointly designing teaching situations and creating common discourses that narrowed the distance between normative curriculum and actual teaching or real curriculum. In order for adult educators to teach effectively they must fulfill the following conditions: (1) they must provide a context for the teaching; (2) the knowledge taught must constitute a solution adapted to the problem; (3) there must be didactic variables that lead to the development of logic in a fruitful way; and… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Following the recommendations of a 2013 instructional audit, the Academically or Intellectually Gifted department implemented a co-teaching instructional strategy in 41 volunteer schools starting in the 2014-15 school year. Implementation data and discussions with central office staff suggest that while implementation fidelity was relatively strong in the first year, it declined in 2015-16. Still, the first year of implementation offered evidence to guide any future co-teaching implementation. First, the “one teach, one assist” method of co-teaching was most frequently observed, suggesting that co-teachers may have defaulted to one of the less optimal instructional strategies under the model. Second, AIG teachers and co-teachers perceived the initiative similarly but differed on a few particularly meaningful survey items pertaining to the perceptions and role of the specialist. Third, AIG students… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Although science and math are increasingly important in the workplace, many students, especially females, avoid these subjects. One route to the achievement of National Education Goal 3–increasing student competence in challenging subject matter–is through integration of vocational education with science and math, enabling students to apply academic knowledge to specific occupational tasks. Among recent integration projects in PHYS-MA-TECH, a collaborative effort of the Illinois Board of Education, Northern Illinois University, five industries, and five high schools. The project features an integrated curriculum developed and delivered by teams of math, physics, and technology teachers in a nontraditional learning environment through team teaching and innovative delivery models. The Technology/Science/Mathematics Integration Project in Virginia middle schools focuses on applying science and math principles to real-world technological problems. In Washington State,… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Co-teaching models have been established in research as an instructional delivery method to provide instruction to diverse students in an inclusive general education setting. Research of inclusive classrooms where general education and special education teachers co-instruct indicates learning for students with learning disabilities (LD) is improved (Cramer, Liston, Nevin & Thousand, 2010). Co-teaching models have been addressed in the literature, however, responsibilities of general and special education teachers regarding co-planning, co-instruction and co-assessing to implement co-teaching effectively requires further investigation (Mastropieri et al., 2005). This qualitative study investigated two co-taught elementary classrooms. The case study examined information from teachers in reading and math co-taught classrooms to document method of implementation and to gain insight into participants’ knowledge and perceptions of co-teaching. Information was gathered from two elementary… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study aimed to investigate how teachers’ certification status, experience in instruction, and teachers’ efficacy beliefs for teaching lower secondary students in mathematics are related to differentiated instruction practices. A total of 42 mathematics teachers and 27 special education teachers answered an electronic questionnaire regarding mathematics teaching efficacy beliefs and their frequency of use of differentiation practices. The results indicated that teachers’ efficacy beliefs were related to differentiation in content, flexible examination models, and co-teaching. Neither certification status nor teacher experience in instruction was related to the frequency of use of differentiation practices. As teacher efficacy beliefs seem to have an effect on the use of differentiation practices, and especially on co-teaching, it should be important for teacher education to focus on developing pre-service teachers’ efficacy beliefs… Continue Reading →
