eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This program, which provides an introduction to study skills in mathematics for pre-algebra students through a series of 10 activity-oriented units, is structured on the assumption that activity-oriented lessons are the most effective way to teach study skills. By completing activities in the units, students learn about study skills needed for mathematics and practice those skills in a mathematics environment. The program addresses a wide range of student needs, providing an introduction to specific skills for students who have little sense of a particular study skill, providing a learning experience of initial mastery for students who are ready to acquire a skill, and offering review and reinforcement for students who have mastered a given skill. Topic areas of the units include: listening as a mathematical skill, problem… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: MATHCO is a motivating series of audiovisual and print materials designed to overcome the negative effects of sex bias and stereotyping on the attitudes, interests, and aspirations of girls toward mathematics and mathematics-related careers. The materials teach mathematics skills, demonstrate relationships between mathematics and other subjects, and provide exposure to mathematics-related careers. They are useful for boys as well as girls at the pre- and early-adolescent stage; they are both multiethnic and nonsexist in text and illustrations. Module 5 considers the relationship between science and mathematics. The ability to make careful observations is stressed. Following the audiovisual script, 14 activities involving classification, levers, noise, archaeological digs, air pollution, and litter, among other topics, are considered, with activity worksheets for each. Following a summary of materials, program objectives, how to use MATHCO, and a sample time line, background information on sexism in schools, sex stereotyping in mathematics textbooks, teacher behaviors, and other factors affecting the mathematics attainment of females is given. Mathematics anxiety and avoidance is discussed, as are sex-related differences… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This teacher’s guide contains lessons and activities that serve as examples of ways to utilize the student booklet, Minority Women in Math and Science, in a variety of subject areas. The minority groups dealt with are American Indians, Asian Americans, Blacks, and Hispanics. The guide consists of eight lesson plans structured in a conceptual format. Information as to the subject area, grade level, and name of teacher who developed it are given. Each lesson plan has an organizational theme given under the heading “Key Concepts” (stereotyping, discrimination, careers) which should facilitate the incorporation of these lessons into ongoing curricula. One or more “generalizations” for each lesson provides teachers with a statement or statements of content emphasis. Specific behavioral objectives are followed by a section on teaching procedures… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The National Center for Leadership in Intensive Intervention (NCLII), a consortium funded by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), prepares special education leaders to become experts in research on intensive intervention for students with disabilities who have persistent and severe academic (e.g., reading and math) and behavioral difficulties. By the end of the first year of their program, scholars in each cohort work in cross-institutional collaborative groups to create an Intensive Intervention Practice Guide. In each guide, scholars identify an approach to intensive intervention for a select population of students with disabilities, describe the existing evidence base behind it, and discuss the next steps in research needed to improve the understanding of designing and delivering the intervention. The “Intensive Intervention Practice Guides” are created for practitioners… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This teacher’s guide explains the content and scope of a 30-booklet series of instructional booklets that provide various special needs students with the opportunity to explore a career and practice math skills simultaneously. The introductory section explains the way in which the series, entitled Math on the Job, will benefit high school students with the following disabilities: mental retardation, learning disabilities, and serious emotional disturbances. The second and third sections outline the scope of the series and provide guidelines for its use. Next, a math competency matrix is presented and explained. A list of suggested enrichment activities concludes the guide. (MN) Link til kilde

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This short paper is designed to serve as a kind of primer for professors interested in thinking through ways to build a rural dimension into mathematics education courses in the interest of squarely addressing the vision and mission of ACCLAIM. Few words, therefore, will be deployed in the interest of establishing an intellectual warrant for the assumptions and assertions embedded in these pages. In fact, all that will be said in this regard is that 1) the ascendancy of what is loosely referred to as “constructivist learning theory” over the past decade clearly elevates the role of context in the development of human understanding. In other words, if professors want students (pre-school through doctoral level) to achieve at high levels, the insertion of context is currently seen… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In an effort to identify and incorporate exemplary practices into existing and future afterschool programs, the U.S. Department of Education commissioned a large-scale evaluation of the 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) program. The purpose of this evaluation project was to develop resources and professional development that addresses issues relating to the establishment and sustainability of afterschool programs. Fifty-three high functioning programs representative across eight regional divisions of the nation, including rural and urban programs, community-based and school district related programs, were identified using rigorous methods. Exemplary practices in program organization, program structure, and especially in content delivery were studied. The findings were synthesized into the Afterschool Toolkit that was made available to programs nationwide via the world-wide-web. Professional development was conducted consistently and extensively throughout the… Continue Reading →
