eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This is a report on the hearing for solutions to the problems in science, mathematics, and engineering education at the postsecondary level. Topics of prepared statements and the testifiers are: (1) educating scientists and engineers (Daryl E. Chubin); (2) science and engineering education needs viewed from the perspectives of the national laboratories (E. Michael Campbell); (3) current status and plan for United States-based companies (M. J. Montague); (4) quality education for minorities (R. O. Hope); (5) programs of excellence in mathematics education (Shirley A. Hill); (6) problems and solutions in elementary school science (Cynthia K. Yocum); (7) students, teachers, and resources in secondary school science (Kent Kavanaugh); (8) education satellite networks (Hal Gardner); (9) challenge and future of science education (Dennis M. Wint); (10) preserving Americas’ scientific… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The College Ambition Program (CAP) model was developed to support high schools in preparing their students to enter STEM fields. CAP includes four programmatic components: mentoring, course counseling and advising, college-related activities and workshops, and teacher professional development and instructional support. This study is part of a larger project that will test the overall effectiveness of the CAP intervention model that is concluding its first year of implementation and data collection (2010-2011). Currently, two experimental schools and two control schools will be included in the analysis. Data will be collected from school records, student surveys, and merged with state data. Each component of the intervention has specific measures for assessing relative value for increasing college attendance and STEM interest among students who are college ready, but do… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This publication compares first-generation students (i.e., those whose parents have no more than a high school education) with their peers whose parent or parents attended college. It focuses on mathematics course taking–the effectiveness of taking algebra in 8th grade and advanced math courses in high school for subsequent college enrollment–and planning strategies students used to prepare for college. The report also examines the involvement of students’ parents, teachers, and other “institutional agents” capable of helping them prepare for college. The results of the study offer both negative and positive findings concerning the experiences of first-generation students. On the negative side, even after controlling for measures of academic achievement, family income, family structure (single versus two parents), and other related characteristics, first-generation students were less likely than their… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: American postsecondary education is a diverse collection of public and private institutions, ranging from community and technical colleges to comprehensive and research universities. These institutions are an invaluable resource to states and to the nation — they educate many of the talented people who work in our industries, businesses, and civic sectors, and they are the places where much of the research and development that benefits this country is conducted. While postsecondary education in the United States has already achieved key successes in the innovation economy, the public postsecondary education system overall risks falling behind its counterparts in many other nations around the world — places where there have been massive efforts to link postsecondary education to the specific innovation needs of industries and regions. This paper… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This guide was prepared to assist in determining the mathematics that should be included in drafting, electricity, electronics, and machine shop programs. Information for the guide was obtained by asking teachers from every postsecondary vocational school in Kentucky to respond to a questionnaire listing mathematics competencies for their specialty by marking each competency as “needed” or “not needed.” The guide is organized in four sections. The first section provides a background for understanding and using the handbook information. The “how” and “why” of what was done are explained in this section. The second section deals with the mathematics competencies for the four programs. Listed are common competencies, competencies specific to programs, and information on using the competency information. Since it may be difficult to visualize a mathematics… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study examined how various individual, family, and school level contextual factors impact the likelihood of planning to major in one of the science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) fields for high school students. A binary logistic regression model was developed to determine the extent to which each of the covariates helped to predict such academic interest. High school course taking in science and performance on science and math standardized tests were significantly and positively related to an increased interest in STEM. College aspirations were significant, and those with loftier educational goals were generally more likely to plan to major in a STEM field. Other individual-level factors also played a significant role, as male high school students were significantly more likely to have an early interest in… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The public high school and three private high schools in Chuuk State (formerly called Truk), Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), are located on the main island of Weno. This report documents the present state of secondary and postsecondary mathematics education in Chuuk State. The information is primarily based on interviews with administrators and mathematics teachers at both the secondary and postsecondary levels in Chuuk State. It is reported that the quality of mathematics education varies from school to school ranging from an evolving system at the public high school to high quality and a commitment to excellence at Xavier High School, one of two Catholic high schools on the island. Except for these two catholic schools, there appears to be a shortage of mathematics teachers at the… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This applied dissertation was designed to identify the characteristics of students enrolled in a GED® preparation program who transitioned to postsecondary programs at the same institution after passing the GED® test. The characteristics studied included age; gender; ethnicity; prematriculation scores in reading, language, and math in the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE); and hours spent preparing for the GED® test in an open-entry, open-exit remedial laboratory environment. Through the use of binary logistic regressions to answer the research questions, a prediction model was constructed. The variables that are able to predict an increased likelihood of transition to postsecondary programs were being between the ages of 16 and 24 at the time of enrollment in the GED® program and having an ethnicity category of Asian, White/Caucasian, Hispanic,… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The number of jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is growing rapidly and is expected to increase by approximately 1 million in the United States between 2012 and 2022 (Vilorio, 2014). People of many racial/ethnic minorities, however, including Hispanic people, are underrepresented among recipients of STEM degrees and among employees in STEM fields (Beede et al., 2011). Regional Educational Laboratory Southwest conducted this review of the research literature to identify malleable factors that can be measured in K-12 settings and that predict students’ postsecondary STEM success (defined as enrolling in, persisting in, and completing a postsecondary STEM major or degree), particularly for Hispanic students. Identifying these predictive malleable factors can help policymakers and district and school administrators develop and implement interventions that increase the percentage… Continue Reading →
