tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore how young adolescents participated in various activities in a science summer camp. A total of 26 Taiwanese students and 16 U.S. students participated in a one-week “Argue like a Scientist” summer camp. Based on the design features of project-based learning, this science summer camp aimed at engaging the students in collaborative scientific argumentation about alternative energies and involved them in various activities related to alternative energies such as a field trip to an ethanol plant and a hands-on project building a solar car. All activities, including the students’ collaborative argumentation, were recorded. Their post-camp surveys were also collected. Three themes emerged from the data analysis. First, regardless of cultural… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The summer of 1983 Reading and Mathematics with Athletics program in New York City provided supplementary remediation in reading and math to 2,157 handicapped New York City students by incorporating sports activities and concepts into instruction. The program was highly effective in meeting its proposed goals and showed marked improvement over previous years in both implementation and effectiveness. In reading, 87.4 percent of the students meeting attendance criteria mastered at least two new reading skills and 72.8 percent mastered three or more. In math, 87.3 percent mastered two or more new skills and 72.1 percent mastered three or more. (In both areas in the two previous years, 60 percent mastered two new skills and less than one third mastered three.) In addition, staff were enthusiastic about the… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This document presents the evaluation results for the Title VII Special Alternative Instructional Program grant to Cicero Public School District 99 (Illinois) for the 1994-95 school year. This was the third year of funding and implementation of this grant, which provided summer school funds with emphasis in building literacy through the use of mathematics and science. A program director, 18 teachers, and 5 staff members served 180 students in grades 3 through 6 in the evaluation year. In the course of the evaluation, several on-site visits were made, and many pieces of additional data were analyzed. The program was designed to increase literacy development for students who have achieved some oral proficiency in English and are designated Limited English Proficiency (LEP). A dual purpose was to increase… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report presents evaluation findings for the 1982 summer cycle of “Reading and Math Through the Community as Classroom,” a Title I funded program operated by the Division of Special Education, of the New York City Public Schools. The program was designed to provide supplementary remediation to 1,197 mildly to moderately handicapped youngsters, and incorporate community experiences and sports activities into reading and math instruction. Results of analyses of pupil achievement data and program interviews and observations indicated that the summer program effectively met its proposed goals. Nearly all of the program participants mastered one or more new skills in reading (87.8 percent) and in math (91.9 percent). Students were also reported by teachers to have made social gains. Program sites were well-chosen and staff were enthusiastic.… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Two topics are currently being greatly discussed in educational literature: (a) summer programs and (b) minority in mathematics and science. The Lincoln Foundation summer program provided participants with 4 weeks of instruction in math and science. The goal of the program was to enhance students’ ability to succeed in high-school level mathematics and science courses. The evaluation design called for the use of a pre- and post-test and parent and teacher surveys. The data indicated that the program is achieving its objective of increasing students’ content knowledge in the various subject areas. The results of the parent survey indicated the high levels of satisfaction with the program. Results from the teacher survey showed overall agreement with the professional development model and instructional support. Highlighted curricular methods include:… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report examines the implementation and effects of the academic summer program for middle school students offered by Building Educated Leaders for Life (BELL). BELL’s middle school program serves rising sixth- through eighth-grade students who are performing one to two years below grade level. The goals of the program are to increase students’ literacy and math skills and to enhance their social development. Overall, the findings from this study indicate that BELL mounted a fairly well-run and well-staffed five-week summer program in summer 2012 and that students attended at a high rate even though the program was voluntary. The pattern of impact estimates suggests that, on returning to school in fall 2012, BELL students may have had stronger math skills than they would have had otherwise, equivalent… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Purpose: Children’s results on school-related achievements tests, such as aspects of math, reading and writing, have been shown to decline following a lengthy summer vacation. Few studies have investigated whether this also applies to vocabulary skills. The purpose of this study is to investigate how lexical organization and retrieval, assessed by a semantic verbal fluency (SVF) task, develops during a lengthy summer vacation versus formal schooling. Method: Sixty-eight children with mean age of 7.9 (ranging from 6.5 to 9.1), were assessed pre- and post-summer vacation and post-fall semester using two SVF categories (Animals and Clothes). The number of words produced in both categories gave the total score. Results: The result of the SVF tests decreased following summer vacation.… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report describes some of the key immediate and long-term outcomes achieved by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC)-Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Summer Institute for Math/Science/Technology for student and teacher participants. This two-week summer program provides high school students and teachers from the Appalachian region the opportunity to work with mentor scientists from ORNL on inquiry-based, applied projects in science, math, and computer technology. The goals of the Summer Institute, in operation since 1990, are to (1) encourage more high school students to continue their studies beyond high school, (2) encourage more students to pursue careers in the projected shortage areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and (3) raise the level of math, science, and technology instruction in high schools throughout the region to facilitate… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A shortage of highly qualified math and science teachers pervades the U.S. public school system. Clearly, recruitment of talented STEM educators is critical. Previous literature offers many suggestions for how STEM teacher recruitment programs and participant selection should occur. This study investigates how early STEM majors who are not already considering teaching careers experienced a summer teaching recruitment internship and how it influenced their ideas about teaching and learning and interest in teaching high school as a possible future career. Using multiple qualitative data sources including interviews and daily internship reflections, a multi-case comparative case study was developed. The findings support that some interns substantially increased their interest in teaching careers, while other interns’ interest did not change or decreased. The impact of the recruitment internship was… Continue Reading →
