ABSTRACT Students’ argumentation skills are considered a central tool to contribute to scientific controversies in the science classroom. Scientific controversies of social relevance (socioscientific issues; SSI) are subject to multiple viewpoints that are often rooted in diverse disciplines. However, the relationship between issue familiarity and students’ multidisciplinary argumentation is still a matter under discussion. This study: (1) explores whether the selection of a particular issue (animal testing) enables students’ engagement in multidisciplinary argumentation without additional issue familiarisation, i.e., using… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Dutch boards governing multiple schools: navigating between autonomy and expectations

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Over the last decade the governance of primary and secondary schools in the Netherlands has by no means become simpler. This paper sketches recent policy developments and their consequences for the leadership of Boards of Multiple Schools (BMSs) and their school leaders. Thereof we describe the challenges BMSs in the Netherlands currently face to enhance educational quality. However, the existence of a wide variety of school board types and a lack of research into BMSs prevent a solid evidence base on how the leadership of school boards contributes to improving the quality of education in the schools they run. As the interaction between school leaders and boards is understudied we make a plea for a research agenda that… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Linguistic landscape of Finnish school textbooks

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This article focuses on the visibility and position of different languages in semiotic space, namely the linguistic landscape provided by textbooks. The aim is to determine to what extent the linguistic landscape of textbooks supports the multilingual emphasis of the Finnish national core curriculum and the multilingualism of Finnish classrooms. The data include 34 textbooks on five of the mandatory subjects and covers the different grades of comprehensive schools in Finland. The presence of different languages was mapped quantitatively by coding all languages that were mentioned or made visible in the textbooks. Further, a qualitative analysis of the most representative parts of the data was carried out. The results of this study show that different contexts and categories… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Fuzzy Regression in Predicting Math Achievement, Based on Philosophic-Mindedness, Creativity, Mathematics Self-efficacy, and Mathematics Self-concept

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT Formulae display:?Mathematical formulae have been encoded as MathML and are displayed in this HTML version using MathJax in order to improve their display. Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. ABSTRACT The present study proposes a flexible/soft model for investigating the role of philosophic-mindedness, creativity, mathematics self-efficacy, and mathematics self-concept in predicting math achievement. To do this end, a fuzzy regression model is developed. Two common criteria are used to evaluate the obtained model. Moreover, the predictability of the model is explained. The case study involves 28 male students from Marand, Iran (year 2015–2016) who took part in a test of mathematics achievement. The participants were junior high-school students… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – InfoInternet for education in the Global South: A study of applications enabled by free information-only internet access in technologically disadvantaged areas

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract This paper summarizes our work on studying educational applications enabled by the introduction of a new information layer called InfoInternet. This is an initiative to facilitate affordable access to internet-based information in communities with network scarcity or economic problems from the Global South. InfoInternet develops both networking solutions as well as business and social models, together with actors like mobile operators and government organizations. In this paper we identify and describe characteristics of educational applications, their specific users, and learning environment. We are interested in applications that make the adoption of Internet faster, cheaper, and wider in such communities. When developing new applications (or adopting existing ones) for such constrained environments, this work acts as initial guidelines prior to… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Facilitating positive L1 transfer through explicit spelling instruction for EFL learners with dyslexia: an intervention study

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract There is growing evidence that dyslexia may involve difficulty with implicit learning, which may hinder learners with dyslexia to acquire spelling skills in a foreign language through implicit instruction. Paradoxically, this is exactly how Dutch students with dyslexia learn English spelling at school. This research aims to determine if implementing explicit spelling instruction, based on a direct comparison between L1 Dutch and L2 English spelling, facilitates the development of spelling skills of dyslexic learners in English as a Foreign Language. The participants were 40 Dutch-speaking secondary-school students independently diagnosed with dyslexia (age 12–14). Twenty participants attended their regular English lessons (comparison group), whereas 20 other participants received explicit contrastive spelling instruction once a week for eight weeks (intervention… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Historical contextualization in students’ writing

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Background: This study focused on undergraduate L2 students’ performance in written historical reasoning, particularly written historical contextualization, before and after participating in a historical reasoning course. The Content and Language Integrated Learning course was designed using a cognitive apprenticeship model and was based on principles likely to facilitate students’ written historical reasoning. Methods: Conducted as a quasi-experimental study, students in an experimental condition received explicit instruction in historical contextualization and other features of historical reasoning, while those in the control group participated in a version of the course without a focus on historical contextualization. Students’ historical reasoning was measured based on their argumentative document-based writing. Findings: Students’ in both the experimental and control groups significantly improved in all… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – School leaders’ actions and hybridity when carrying out reform and confronting teachers’ responses: institutional and organisational perspectives

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT In 2008, Iceland launched policy reform in upper secondary education. This paper elucidates how upper secondary school leaders acted when leading reform and confronting teacher responses. The study is based on interviews with 21 leaders from nine upper secondary schools. The data were analysed usingfive response categories to macro-level demands for change, institutional and organisational leadership, and theories on subject hierarchies. The findings show how the school leaders from the nine participating schools experienced differently the policy enactment in their schools. Seven of the nine schools matched three out of Coburn’s five response categories. Adding the category of pioneering would enable appropriate categorisation of new schools. Polarisation appeared in the data both between and within the evaluated schools. Within… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Student work: a re-conceptualization based on prior research on student workload and Newtonian concepts around physical work

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT In this article, we propose a new model of student workload. We conducted an extensive literature review of student workload, its impact on students’ lives, factors influencing student workload, objective and subjective measurements. The previous conceptualizations of student workload conflate student work and course workload, two related but distinct concepts. By synthesizing prior research and concepts from Newtonian physics such as work, force, and distance, we have discovered a model that better explains and differentiates the nature of and the various factors contributing to student work and load. We re-define student work as the product of student academic effort and their achievement in the course. In this model, student academic effort is generated to meet course demands in… Continue Reading
