Girls often do not receive the encouragement or instruction to assume leadership. I want to identify the elements of single-sex education that foster female leadership and consider their application in the public education system. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study explores the effects of school-level characteristics on North Carolina students’ reading and math achievement from fourth through eighth grade, focusing on the relationships between achievement and the racial and poverty composition of schools. After creating race-by-poverty cohorts of schools, I use multilevel models to examine math and reading achievement for the same students in fourth, sixth, and eighth grades. The racial and poverty composition of schools affect student achievement after factoring in student, family, and other school influences. In addition, increasing teacher quality and school resources reduces but does not eliminate the effects of school racial and poverty composition on student achievement. Nearly three quarters of SDUSD students are students of color, including 47% who are Latino/a and 9% who are African American. A novel survey was created to determine a teacher’s perspective of his/her school culture, as well as to measure a teacher’s science achievement, math achievement, science self-efficacy, and math self-efficacy. The survey was administered at the beginning and end of the Physics and Integrated Math and Science Methods courses. Results show the changes of math and science self-efficacy beliefs and school culture beliefs. However, few studies examine the use of the approach as part of a comprehensive school improvement process involving academic as well as behavioral goals, particularly with regard to use of data-driven decision making and data teams. This article describes the efforts of a low-performing middle school in establishing preventative measures and interventions within such a framework. Results indicate a reduction in teacher discipline referrals and student suspensions, including those involving students with disabilities and statistically significant improvement on 30 of 47 items of a school climate and student resiliency survey.
