eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This publication reports on resources on the Web for the area of math. A quick look is given at innovative sites under the areas of new resources for students, new ways for teachers and students to interact, new ways of presenting math, and new tools for research. Next, advantages and disadvantages are identified for each of the following technologies: HTML pages with GIF images for equations; Adobe Acrobat (PDF); IBM Techexplorer pages; server-side programming (CGI, Perl, Java, ASP scripts, etc.); and HTML and components (Design Science WebEQ, IBM Techexplorer components). Standards for math communication on the Web are then discussed. A list of the standards that Math on the Web developers should be considered with is given, along with the role each standard plays in the HTML… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This workbook is designed as an easy-to-read, slower-paced mathematics text for students who have learning, reading, and language problems. Helping students fulfill mathematics requirements for graduation is a goal; the book can be used as the core or supplement to the mathematics curriculum in mainstreamed or special education classrooms, in mathematics laboratories, or as part of sheltered workshop and vocational training programs. The eight units begin with a brief discussion of how fractions are used in real life. Each lesson focuses on only one major concept, and includes comprehension exercises with an answer key. Most lessons are reinforced with at least one worksheet, available in the teacher’s guide. The units are titled: Fractions All Around You, Naming Fractions, Different Names for the Same Amount, Renaming Fractions, Comparing… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This instructor’s guide contains materials for a 40-hour course designed to refresh math skills for current computer numerical control machine operators. The course uses two instructional methods: computer-based multimedia and traditional instruction. The course description lists target audience and general objective. The next section gives instructors basic information related to providing successful educational programs in a workplace setting, an instructor’s lexicon of strategies and principles that can be used in teaching, instructor’s role and responsibilities, and course objectives. An explanation of lesson format describes these components of each lesson plan: unit name; lesson name; description and specific goals; objectives; prerequisite skills; technology use; materials needed; teacher to teacher; pretest; posttest; purpose/rationale; procedures/activities; evaluation and extension activities; resources; and homework. A section on planning and scheduling deals with… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Although science and math are increasingly important in the workplace, many students, especially females, avoid these subjects. One route to the achievement of National Education Goal 3–increasing student competence in challenging subject matter–is through integration of vocational education with science and math, enabling students to apply academic knowledge to specific occupational tasks. Among recent integration projects in PHYS-MA-TECH, a collaborative effort of the Illinois Board of Education, Northern Illinois University, five industries, and five high schools. The project features an integrated curriculum developed and delivered by teams of math, physics, and technology teachers in a nontraditional learning environment through team teaching and innovative delivery models. The Technology/Science/Mathematics Integration Project in Virginia middle schools focuses on applying science and math principles to real-world technological problems. In Washington State,… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Begun in 1983, the Math English Science Technology Education Project (MESTEP) is a collaborative effort among the University of Massachusetts, a network of Massachusetts school systems, and private corporations, designed to recruit into teaching academically talented college graduates with degrees in math, English, and science. MESTEP is an intensive 15-month program during which candidates complete an M.Ed. degree program that includes certification in one of three disciplines, one full semester paid teaching internship, and one full semester paid industry internship. The combination of course work, teaching, and industry experience represents a new route by which college graduates can enter teaching. Teaching interns are employed by a school system to assume most of the responsibilities of a full-time teacher; industry interns work in a full-time position at one… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In May 1992, 22 Massachusetts mathematics educators who either teach or coordinate/direct adult basic education (ABE) and General Educational Development (GED) programs were recruited into a group called the Math Team. During their monthly business/training sessions in central Massachusetts, members worked on various individual and team activities, including review and adaptation of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards for adult learning environments and production of newsletter for adult educators called “The Problem Solver.” Team members were interviewed during the eighth month of the yearlong project to determine their attitudes toward the Math Team’s operation and effectiveness as a staff development activity. Interviewees credited the Math Team with improving their understanding of mathematics and ability to reach students, helping them gain energy and motivation from… Continue Reading →
